Watching CNN, Scott McClellan is addressing the Federal response to the hurricane. 90,000 sq miles are under Federal disaster declaration. It’s frustrating to live so far away and not be able to do anything to help. If I could offer shelter to anyone, help pass out bottled water or something, I would. The Red Cross has collected $21 million of which $15 million is individual donations made on their website. Here’s the link, it might be slow to load as the site is getting so much traffic. I’m planning to ask the boys’ school about doing a spare change drive and taking it to a Coinstar machine. I had already asked them how they felt about collecting clothes, books and toys but I didn’t know that it actually costs the Red Cross more money to sort and ship those items than if they buy them locally.

I’m happy to report that Chris has been asked to help answer phones for the Red Cross tomorrow night. He works for Electronic Data Systems (EDS) and they were asked to help because of the capacity they have to take large numbers of phone calls. The kids didn’t understand so I turned on CNN and showed them the footage of people huddled under overpasses and crammed into football stadiums. Nathan wanted to know what they would have to eat and I said whatever they can get honey. He asked me to change the channel because it was scary and I said I know it’s scary but it’s important for you to know what’s going on in the country right now, why Daddy is being asked to give up Friday night with his family to go back to work. It’s the least we can do.
On the 8-yr.-old’s joke: At least you’re not at the almost-3-yr-old level. This is Bella’s favorite “knock-knock” joke:
