People, I gotta tell ya, I had NO IDEA. I thought I was bucking the system and sticking it to Comcast and whatever, by switching to DirecTV. And sure, the signal was really clear, except when it snowed and Chris had to climb on the roof to brush the snow off the dish. A hard rain would wipe out the signal for hours. So I bit the bullet and called Comcast.

Do you know what Comcast has? Do you? Comcast has OnDemand, that’s what. A library of movies and TV episodes available to watch any time. Yesterday, I watched “Stripes”. At one point I had to turn the TV off, and when I turned it back on and went back to Stripes, it started right back up where I left off.

There’s a whole section of kids programming, including individual episodes from baby DVDs like “Brainy Baby”. There’s a “Tot Spot” with a series of Safety Videos called “Danger Rangers”. You know, little two minute cartoons with titles like “Wear your seatbelt” and “Don’t take pills” (okay, those aren’t the real titles, but you get the point).

There’s OnDemand exercise videos, including two bellydancing workouts and two “exotic dance” workouts. Which I will not be doing, thankyouverymuch. I’ll be sticking to the cardio and the Pilates. I own about 75 exercise videos, but we don’t have a VCR anymore!

What am I watching right now? “Laguna Beach”. That’s right. They’re having a fashion show to raise money for people whose houses were destroyed in a landslide, and Lauren caught Jason kissing Jessica, and then Jason lied and Jessica lied and ohmygodtheDRAMA. I love it!

Oh, and while we’re on the subject of TV, and this has nothing at all to do with OnDemand, are you watching “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip“? I’m going to yell now, THAT SHOW FREAKIN’ ROCKS. It is hands down the best writing of a show since “The West Wing”. It stars Bradley Whitford, whose performance is similar to that of his West Wing character. There’s something about his timing and delivery of dialogue that is smart and sharp and funny at the same time. You can’t not watch him on screen. His costar is Matthew Perry, who is proving that he is not just Chandler Bing. His character is serious and concerned and anxious, yet he gets in little comic moments that break the tension at just the right time. Their boss is played by Amanda Peet, who although she seems too pretty to be a network President, is intelligent and sharp. The timing of the dialogue is pitch-perfect. And as a former theater geek, I’m loving that the show goes backstage and shows the process behind making what is essentially a live play. There have only been two episodes and the show already has it’s own Wikipedia entry, so if you haven’t seen it, you can catch right up.

I’m in TV heaven. I might even get my ass off the couch and do an exercise routine. And then watch more “Laguna Beach”, because I have to see if Lauren and Jason can work it out.

This is a test comment. I’m trying to figure out how to have my blog comments emailed to me and be able to reply to them with an email. Hope it works.

I don’t have this yet, but it may be coming. Last winter when it snowed, I missed Gray’s Anatomy because of it. As much as I resist change sometimes, I may have to just do it.

I totally agree about Studio 60. I caught the premiere by accient last week and was really impressed, and last night’s show was fabulous. I love it. Probably the best new show since Lost, in my opinion.

Kris (3 comments.) on 26 September, 2006 at 1:52 pm #

I’m with you on Studio 60 also. Watched it for the first time last night. How can you miss with Tommy Schlame (sp?) Aaron Sorkin, Josh AND Danny (oh, woops, wrong show). And I really love DL Huggly also. I do not regulary watch ANY show on TV right now. First time I think I’ve ever been able to say that. But I’ll watch Studio 60 again.

We have Direct TV and hubby won’t switch to Comcast, so I can only imagine what OnDemand must be like!!!!

Crap, was Studio 60 on last night? I kept meaning to tape it, but kept getting distracted by kids and a husband. I would *so* love a DVR or whatever so we don’t have to attempt remembering to program the VCR, but alas. Not at this point in time. :(

“raise money for people whose houses were destroyed in a landslide, and Lauren caught Jason kissing Jessica, and then Jason lied and Jessica lied and ohmygodtheDRAMA”

that’s “durrrAM-ah!” that’s how they say in Laguna.

Loved the “old” LB.

I will have ot check out Studio 60….

Also loving Studio 60. Rocks.

But I would also watch ‘don’t take pills’, if they made that show. Sounds good.

Comcast OnDemand … well, it’s purely orgasmic. (Can I say that here?)

We don’t have TIVO, but we have the DVR (same thing, right?)

I’m never bored with the OnDemand. There are so many different programs to watch, movies too. And, there’s Encore, with is free here.

Did you know that you can tape two shows at the same time? Yup. I don’t know how, but our Comcast guy said it can be done and it’s in the manual.

One day, our DVR box broke down. I was in my jammies. I threw on my winter coat (long), pulled on my boots, and made it from the burbs to the Comcast office downtown in 23 minutes flat to get a new box.

I’m not a daytime tv watcher (usually I flip between CNN, Fox, and MSNBC). So it’s when I usually get to watch the stuff we record so it doesn’t back up.

That’s the one thing you have to be careful of … recording too much stuff … and never having the time to watch it.

Oh, oh … I love my Comcast~!

No Comcast here. Charter digital cable. I can’t complain, although it’s too expensive and the changes in channel assignments drives me to drink. But…it’s gotta be better than dish.

YESSSS - Studio 60 is MY crack. LOVE IT.

jen (17 comments.) on 27 September, 2006 at 9:26 am #

also, it has porn too (not that I would watch that trash but um, you know it’s there if that’s your thing)

mothergoosemouse (44 comments.) on 27 September, 2006 at 9:51 am #

I love Comcast OnDemand too. Alpha Mom has programming there too - some of it is quite good. But I really dig the movies and children’s programming.

“Don’t take pills”… Girl, you crack me up. I don’t have Comcast OnDemand but it sounds very tempting…

jen (2 comments.) on 27 September, 2006 at 8:04 pm #

it truly does rock. sometimes it’s the little things that are so very good.

Mrs. Chicky (34 comments.) on 27 September, 2006 at 10:44 pm #

I’m loving Studio 60. But I love Bradley Whitford and Matthew Perry. If they were on Barney I’d probably be watching that too. And I HATE Barney.

Izzy (58 comments.) on 28 September, 2006 at 1:11 am #

Oh man…the DVR is a gift from the gods. I love it. Our On-Demand isn’t that great though. There are a lot of movies on it that I’ve never even heard of. It reeks of “straight-to-video” suckage.

TB (81 comments.) on 28 September, 2006 at 10:51 am #

On demand has been a godsend for me being stuck in the house. Don’t forget to check out the premium channel’s original programming and the documentaries are awesome too.

Fraulein N (76 comments.) on 28 September, 2006 at 11:16 am #

OnDemand is pretty cool, I have to admit. We’re still coming to grips with the fact that you watch stuff WHENEVER. I also liked Studio 60, although Amanda Peet kind of bugs. It’s not that she’s pretty, it’s that she’s kind of young to be in that position unless she inherited it or something.

Also: Lost is back NEXT WEEK. Next weeeeeek! (Can you tell I’m excited?)

mike (15 comments.) on 28 September, 2006 at 2:08 pm #

Firstly, I absolutely love your reaction to Laguna Beach. Really just that whole paragraph. Golden.

Secondly, there have been TWO eps of Studio 60? Sh|t. I must have missed one.

Thirdly, where do I buy some alone time with a television? Seemingly impossible in my house.

Fourthly (this is getting tired, isn’t it?), I’ll trade you my VCR for your OnDemand. My wife might even go for that, despite my imminent divorce over the digital cable.

wendy (13 comments.) on 28 September, 2006 at 5:05 pm #

We used to have Comcast On Demand, and I was totally addicted. Then we moved somewhere with no On Demand, and I went through withdrawals. Now we have again, but it’s not through Comcast and not yet as extensive. Then last week, we got a DVR too. I think I could sit on my butt all day watching TV if I had the patience to sit on my butt all day and watch TV.

Nancy (62 comments.) on 28 September, 2006 at 9:30 pm #

Oh, I love our Comcast On Demand. The kids’ shows have saved me from days of desperation, and I get a kick out of the free movies.

I have Studio 60 Tivoed to watch (hopefully) this weekend. The other new show I’m loving is Ugly Betty — I caught the premiere tonight.

And actually, J was watching the Lost Season 2 recap again, so I think I might be back into Lost addition territory.

Sigh. Now if I only had time to actually WATCH TV, life would be good.

bellydancing workouts and “exotic dance” workouts….??
I’m sold!

I think Comcast needs to pay you for this…(I’m just saying)

chris (30 comments.) on 3 October, 2006 at 8:48 am #

I have heard of the On Deman thing, but never knew what it meant. But now? I am thinking I need to investigate further.

And studio 60…loved it.

Barry (1 comments.) on 31 July, 2007 at 3:38 pm #

I love my Comcast. I couldn’t be happier with Comcast OnDemand. I’ve never seen Studio 60. I’ll be sure to check it out.

Children's Gardening on 13 September, 2007 at 4:29 pm #

Good morning! I was surfing the internet Thursday afternoon during my break, and found your blog by searching MSN for children’s gardening. This is a topic I have great interest in, and follow it closely. I liked your insight on st OnDemand is my crack, and it made for good reading. Keep up the good work…
