Day 25: Crafts and Romance

Look what I made!

It will hang on the outside of my house between my kitchen window and the front door. What I love most about it is my husband and I picked out the wreath and all the decorations together, on a shopping trip to Target which we took ALONE, while the kids were at my Dad and Stepmom’s. It has been YEARS since my husband and I got to spend a whole day Christmas shopping together, and it was wonderful. I forgot how nice it is to walk through a store or the mall holding just each other’s hands.

When it’s just me and him, and we can focus on each other exclusively, I see a different side of my husband than when we are with the kids. He is funny, and says clever and snarky things, and gets misty-eyed at the sight of newborn babies bundled up in their strollers. There was a couple walking in front of us at the mall, each holding the hand of a little girl around two years old, and he nudged me, pointed to her and grinned. I knew without him saying anything that he was thinking that would be us next year walking with Kaitlyn.

All and all it was a great day, even if Kaitlyn refused to take her nap this afternoon and was downright cranky in the car on the way home. Tomorrow Chris will hang up the wreath, and carry the boxes up from the basement that contain the Dickens Village pieces I inherited from my Mother, and next weekend we’ll put up the tree. We’ve got Christmas CDs on the hard drive (did you know the Xbox 360 will play music from your hard drive? It’s very cool), and Christmas DVDs in a stack by the TV. I’m putting together the kids’ outfits for the Christmas Card, and planning crafts for the class party at school.

But the best thing happening right now is that my husband and I are getting along, really well in fact, and even rekindling our romance with each other. We’re remembering who we used to be before we had the kids, and remembering why we fell in love in the first place. You can’t ask for anything better at Christmas than that.

I need to take a lesson from you! About husband relations and wreath making.

I hope to come by your blog more now that I’m done with NaNo. Thanks for stopping by so often!

I love that last paragraph. And holy cow, you have mad wreath-making skillz.

  10. It is always important to spend at least a couple of days a month with husband – all alone – no work – no kids. If we can’t get the complete day, just an evening sometimes will help. This is what I & my hubby Andrew always do. At least once in a month. Making a big wreath like this one – together – is always fun.

    Have a great New Year!
