I had a surprisingly good day yesterday. I’ve been building it up in my mind for so long, how I was going to turn Forty, and how that would mean I was so old, and not knowing if that would mean a whole day of being completely bummed out. Instead, I ended up having a pretty darn good day.

I went to my favorite coffee place for a birthday Mocha and Cinnamon Roll, then spent some time reading blog comments, then went to lunch with my best friend at Red Lobster, followed by some thrift-store shopping. Here’s a photo the waitress took at Red Lobster, you can see Kaitlyn’s black eye that she got running into our computer table on Saturday.

When I got home and checked my blog post, I found that I already had over a hundred comments wishing me a Happy Birthday! Thank you so much everyone who mentioned it on your own blog, or emailed your friends, because you made me feel really, really special. I honestly thought I might not even get forty comments!

Chris took us out for dinner, and I picked Red Robin because I knew the kids would like their food and I also knew I would get a free birthday dessert. I did not intentionally choose two restaurants with the word “Red” in the title. The photos are on my Flickr page, but here’s my favorite:

Best Dad in the world

So now I am 40. I have to check a different set of boxes on questionnaires, and it’s only ten more years until I can join the AARP. And yet, I still feel like I’m in my twenties, and I guess that’s what really matters.

Oliver’s got a black eye too — we should get these two together. LOL!

You are so cute!
And is it bad that I’m giggling at Kaitlyn’s black eye because mine do the same thing? Sometimes I swear people think we beat up our kids, but in reality, the kids do it to themselves as we gasp in horror…

Like I said yesterday, you are twenty… just two twenties!
And I’m actually looking forward to being able to check off that box on all the job applications I’ve been sending out. Apparently there must be some sort of preference in hiring over 40.

Can you send me the name of the painkillers Kaitlyn is on in that lunch picture? I could use those most days at work!

Just kidding.

Glad you had a great day!

You look really happy in that photo. I’m glad you had such a great day and there is definitely something to be said for not having to cook at all!
