When I was in college, I spent a summer working at a local park. We had a group of juvenile offenders who had been sentenced by the juvenile court to work at the park, and much to my surprise, one of the offenders was a boy who had been a few years behind me in school. His offense was that he and some of his friends had gone out driving one night and had been hitting residential mailboxes with baseball bats! They called it “mailbox baseball”. By the time he ended his ten weeks of scrubbing the slime off the bottoms of the paddle boats, I’m pretty sure he had learned his lesson
I lived in several cheap apartments during and after college, and one thing they all had in common were the crappy commercial mailboxes in the lobby. Anyone with a butter knife could have pried the doors of those mailboxes open if they had wanted to. I wish the apartment owners had given a little more thought to the quality of the mailboxes and purchased better ones from a website like Mailboxixchange. I never had any mail stolen (that I know of), but thinking back on it now, I know they weren’t very secure.
I remember when email was first introduced and people said that in a few years there would be no more paper mail. Ha. My mailbox isn’t any less full now, that’s for sure. I LIKE getting my mail now that I get free samples, free books to review, and even this cool new PC that I’m using. Email is fine, but I say keep that snail mail coming!
