Sometimes I really wish that we could live with less stuff. After yesterday’s trip to Target, I still had to go to the grocery store to buy all the food we will need for today’s cookout we are having for some friends. There will be the five of us plus our friends John and Doreen and their two kids, so that meant buying enough groceries to feed nine people. Plus we needed paper plates, and napkins, and toilet paper, and…I was there for two and a half hours and spent $130.00.

For me, being able to go shopping by myself is like getting a little vacation. I look at makeup, flip through magazines, and then walk up and down every grocery aisle, all without anyone asking me could I buy them this? What about this? Can’t they just have this? On this trip, I looked at mattifying gel that goes under your makeup to keep your face from shining, painted my thumb with a really pretty sparkly shade of nail polish, tested lipsticks on the back of my hand. I looked at new bedsheets, DVDs, and tennis shoes. Since I can’t keep plants alive for anything, I even looked at silk trees for this corner of the dining room that needs a little pizazz.

When I got home and Chris started unpacking the grocery bags, you know what he asked me? Why I hadn’t planned the meals for the next five days and bought the groceries for that. It is always something.
