Boston Terriers-great family dog

I love our dog Elvis, but once in a while I look online for information about other breeds that would be well-suited for our family. I think a Boston Terrier would be a great choice.

Boston Terriers are one of the most popular breeds in the United States, known for their sunny disposition. Because of their affectionate nature, the breed is known as the “American Gentleman”. Boston Terriers were bred to be companion dogs, and they are happiest when they are with their family members. They make an excellent house dog, and do well around children and other pets.

Boston Terriers do have one health issue related to their eyes, which are large and protruding. It is important to keep them out of the sun for long periods of time. I also learned something surprising from reading a Boston Terriers Dog Guide Article, which is that no dog should be allowed to ride in a car with their head out of the window, because the air pressure is bad for their eyes. I had no idea! Guess Elvis will have to keep his head inside the car from now on.

I know we won’t be getting a second dog any time soon, I have enough on my plate as it is, but one day I would love to find a shelter that has a Boston Terrier waiting for adoption and spend some time seeing if my instincts are right, that this would be a good breed of dog for our family to own.

What if you get UV protective sunglasses?

I wonder if that would make it all right to leave your Boston Terrier out doors for longer periods . . .
    ;)

Brett- I’ve seen doggy visors at the pet store, that must be what they are for. I am a bad dog owner, I never even thought about protecting my dog’s eyes from the sun. And I ALWAYS let him ride with his head out the car window!

Good to know! My son, who is 5, has been wanting a dog for awhile now. We’re not quite ready just yet, but we will be thinking of getting one soon and this is good information. I’ve always thought Jack Russell Terriers were adorable but I hear they have tons of energy…and with 2 children who wear me out, I don’t know if I could handle one. :)

As for sticking their heads out the car window….ah, they obviously enjoy it, so let ‘em do it!!! ;)

  4. *waving hello* :) Nice to “talk” to you tonight!

Alison- Poke around The Dog Guide site, it’s got tons of information. The only thing about Boston Terriers is that they get very excited around their family, and have to be trained not to jump up. Otherwise, they really do sound like a great family dog.

Gasp! I’ve had two Bostons . . . they are the best little dogs!!! The only drawback I’ve had is their penchant for chewing ~ EVERYTHING. Especially as puppies, those powerful jaws go to work and bye bye sofa. Luckily, they are very easily trained and crated. Should that day arrive when you’re ready for one, you won’t regret it!

  11. Without a doubt. Just the kind of dog that we will feel safe leaving our kids with. Sadly mine… passed away…. its so hard to think of replacing him…..

We have a Boston Terrier (Buddy). If you are looking at getting this breed, remember that terriers by nature are very hyper and Buddy is going a hundred miles an hour all the time. He is a lot of fun, but I find him a handful at times. I have two other dogs, a miniature schnauzer and a mixed breed chow/german shepard. Daisy got cancer in one of her eyes and had to have it removed. It was from the sun, mellinoma. (sp) Anyway too much sun can be bad for your dogs eyes and our eyes too as far as that goes.
