My wonderful day with Mimi

As you know, I have never been shy about asking bloggers who live anywhere near me if they would like to meet. I’ve had Becky and her kids here for lunch, I’ve met Joy for ice cream and shopping at the mall, so when Mimi mentioned that she was coming to Michigan to visit her parents, I unabashedly asked her if we could meet up. Her parents live about 90 miles away, on the other side of Flint, so I packed up the kids and off we went.

First of all, let me just say that Mimi’s parents don’t just live in a house. They live in a amazing multi-story dwelling built over 100 years ago, that looked more like one of the ivy-covered brick buildings that my college classes were held in. There were trees, and pathways, and a clearing between their house and the neighbors’ that is known as the “fairy circle”, because there are fairies living on the trees, and huge mushrooms, wind chimes and mirrors, it really is magical. The fairies even leave gifts for the children in the circle:

Kaitlyn felt right at home, especially once she found the slide. I love this photo of her:

Mimi’s mother fixed us lunch, then we went swimming in the neighbors’ pool. Kaitlyn sat on the edge of the diving board and jumped into Mimi’s mother’s arms, over and over. It was as if we had all known each other for years, instead of having just met. I have never felt that instantly comfortable with any new friend, let alone their whole family. Remember, Mimi and I just “met” through our blogs a few months ago, and I had never met her parents at all! But by the time we left, her mother was encouraging me to come back any time I want.

Mimi’s boys are younger than mine, Josh is six and Sam is two and a half, but by the time they swam together for hours and then after we all went into town for ice cream, Nathan and Josh were bonding over Pokemon and a love of making the loudest noises possible.

Kaitlyn took a little while to get over her shyness around Sam, but soon they were eating Goldfish crackers out of the same bowl and playing trains together. We even got Sam to put his arm around her and tried to snap a photo, but Kaitlyn was too interested in the trains to stand still!

I wish Mimi didn’t live in Georgia, because I could see us spending a lot of time together. She “gets” me, you know? It was so nice of her and her family to welcome us like that, to treat us like we were family too. Her mother even invited us to come back in two weeks when Mimi’s sister and her family will be visiting, but it’s the weekend I will be at BlogHer, darn it. But thank you, Mimi, and thank you Mimi’s family, we had an amazing day with you!

Man, that is cool! I have never met anyone IRL from the web. I guess I’m happy staring at the monitor all day. But that is really cool, and makes me wonder if I shouldn’t be trying to do something like this. Of course, I live in sunny Florida, so it shouldn’t be too hard to drag people out here for a little vacation in the sun. The really, really hot sun. Maybe I should move to Michigan instead :) Anyway, it warms the heart to see something like this. It’s almost like internet magic.

MisterSteve- there are TONS of bloggers in Florida! You just need to be nosy and poke around, try Googling “Florida bloggers”. Or, come to Michigan, that works too :)

The internet ROCKS! There are so many people I would never have met if it wasn;t for meeting them online first. It’s very cool that you two were able to get together.

  5. That’s a really fun place to live! I would like to meet a lot of bloggers I know.

Cathy- Thanks! I could have taken even cuter ones, you know, where you can see their faces, but my husband put the telephoto lens on the camera, so to get that photo, I had to stand across the kitchen from them! I think Mimi has more on her Flickr page though, I’ll get the URL from her and come back and put it in the post. See you in TWO WEEKS!!!!! Squueeeeee!

Angie- Um, Florida, right? Have you met the previous commenter MisterSteve? He’s in Florida and doesn’t know anyone! Someone needs to arrange a Florida bloggers conference!

  8. Angie says:

Yep. FL. I actually never have met any fellow bloggers yet, but lots and lots via a couple of my static sites I’ve had online for 10 years now.

Thank you Elizabeth! We had such a fun time too!

I wanted to put an entry too, but my parent’s PC is screwy and I can’t update my blog from here… only 2 weeks until the techy geek I’m married to gets here to fix it!

I feel the same way. You and your kids just fit in here like an old shoe! Josh keeps asking when we will see you guys again!
