Two Weeks- time to start freaking out

Do you guy realize that I leave for BlogHer in TWO WEEKS and a day? Holy crap! Time to start freaking out! I’m speaking, right, or rather, volunteering to help new bloggers get set up with WordPress. I am supposed to be having a conference call with the ladies running the session, but I haven’t had it yet, and I have NO IDEA what to expect. I’m going to assume that some people will be brand new bloggers, and some will be switching to WP from other platforms. I can show them both how to actually set up their WP blog, which just takes a minute, but then what? Do I need to show them exactly how to write a post? This is your Dashboard, there are many like it, but only this one is yours, that kind of thing? I don’t want to patronize anyone, but I don’t want to talk over anyone’s head, either!

I don’t even remember what it was like to write my first post on WP. What kinds of questions do you think I should expect? How to put in a link, a photo, a YouTube video? What about sidebars- Flickr badges, blogrolls, that kind of thing? I have NO IDEA.

Oh, and remember the navy blue Land’s End t-shirt dress? It came in the mail today, and when they said t-shirt dress, they meant T-SHIRT dress. It feels exactly like a soft t-shirt, except it goes down to my knees. And it CLINGS. I am going to need foundation garments, people, to control my squishy belly at the least. The white necklace and the white shoes? Look kind of ridiculous. And I have no more money to buy jewelry or shoes, so I’m screwed. And freaking out, can you tell? TWO WEEKS.

You will do fine! And you will LOOK fine!

I can’t wait to hear about it!

I just have a shallow comment… Email me – if you’re about my size(ish) I can mail you my Spanx to borrow for BlogHer as long as you mail it back afterwards. It’s not a miracle worker, but totally gives a little boost. ;)

Mimi- I know, I know. And then your Mom was so sweet when I said I couldn’t come back that weekend to meet your sister because I was going to BlogHer, and your Mom goes “awww”. I LOVE her! I took one photo of the two of you, and it came out all blurry! I’m going to try to fix it though.

Sounds like you already have it worked out on what you should be prepared to answer:
    - how to set up a WordPress blog from scratch
    - how to move to WP from the main other platforms
    - how to post a simple post
    - how to insert pictures/video/etc
    - how to create links in your posts
    - how to create a blogroll
    - maybe something brief about advertising
Perhaps you could put some of the basics down on a piece of paper and print copies as ‘handouts’.
Have fun – you’ll be great at this.

Okay, I’ve got another newbie question for you… When I write a post, I’ve noticed that there are two options. Write a new post or write a page. What exactly is the difference. Is a post supposed to be short, and a page for longer entries??

Oh, also, remember how I was having problems getting my avatar pic to show up? It was just showing up as a black box. Well, here’s what I did. I uploaded the pic I wanted to use to photobucket.com. Then, I re-saved the pic on my computer in a different file in my pictures. After that, I uploaded the re-saved pic, and it worked. I don’t know exactly why, but I guess photobucket might put the pics in a format that’s easier for wordpress to read???

You’ve helped me a lot, so I don’t think you need to worry. Good luck ! :)

I’ll email you some visuals I send to clients – kinda like the most often asked stuff I get when setting someone up on WP for the first time, or ppl who have moved (usually from Blogger).

Maybe bring with you a handout of resources for new WP bloggers (like where to find the forums and other links you found helpful)

I think you’ll find that you’ll run into all levels of bloggers and some might have questions you simply won’t know. The blogosphere is changing so rapidly, that it’s hard to keep up with every plugin etc.

I’m sure you will be great Elizabeth – I know you have learned a ton just in the last what, 6-8 months or so? You will shine. Not to worry.

Amanda- those are really great suggestions, thank you so much! It’s been so long since I was a new blogger, I’ve forgotten what it’s like not to know what to do!

Annie- Great question. I do apologize for how long it took me to answer-seriously, the freaking out :) When you look at your WP blog, the posts are the main content. When you want to write about something funny your kids did, you write a new post.

A page, on the other hand, is for information that generally isn’t going to change, and is there to provide information. Examples of pages might include an About You page.

Karen- Thank you SO MUCH for emailing me those pdf files! I feel slightly less panicked now :) And thank you for the nice compliment- I never, EVER thought I would be one of those people who was answering the questions instead of asking them!

I’ll bring my jewelery box. We can rotate pieces. All kidding aside, if I could fit my jewlery in my suitcase, I would.

I have pretty basic/casual clothes. Nothing fancy. Don’t worry. I’m in your shoes!

Dana- Well, I’m dead serious: the navy blue t-shirt dress is just that, a PLAIN navy blue t-shirt dress. I desperately need a necklace to snazz it up, do you have one I can borrow?

Also, how did I not know that you have a Boston Terrier? Did you see the post I wrote here and on MomReviews about Boston Terriers? Aren’t they cute??
