Taking it One Day at a Time since 1996
1 Aug
To everyone who commented (and re-commented) on my last post, thank you. Thank you for adding your voice to the discussion. Maybe someone at BlogHer will take note and make monetization a larger part of next year’s discussion topics. I want to move on to a new subject, but before I do, I want to reiterate one important point: I did not say, nor do I believe, that Chris Jordan should not have made her very brief comment about PayPerPost during the panel session. Being a BlogHer sponsor did not give anyone immunity from any kind of criticism, if that’s what it was. Chris has left me two very well written comments and sent me an email, and I understand her position regarding PayPerPost quite well. What’s more, I agree with her, for the most part.
If you are a brand new blogger, looking to earn some income, and you write about technology, business, or health, PayPerPost could be a good resource for you. If, however, you have established and proudly declared yourrself to be a Mommyblogger, then suddenly writing about technology, business, and health (and by health, I mean hair transplants and liposuction) is going to come across as disingenuous, no matter how carefully you write the posts.
I am no longer going to allow others to dictate what I can and can’t have in my content, on my sidebars, or anywhere else on this blog. It’s MINE. I pay the hosting, I do the work, I am the editor, the manager, the proofreader, the copywriter. I won’t accept paid link or review assignments that don’t meet my standards, and I won’t run ads or join ad networks that don’t meet my standards, either. It’s all about ME, ME, ME.

Now, BlogHer itself. For those of you who didn’t attend, and are still wondering what the heck a blogging conference is like, I’ll tell you- it is amazing. Even if you don’t think you would want to spend two days in conference rooms talking about blogging, how would you like to get pampered from morning ’til night? How would you like to not have to fix breakfast, lunch or snacks, have free beverages and more snacks whenever you desire them, have free Wi-Fi access, get more free sponsor gifts than you’ll be able to carry in one trip, and stay in a very nice hotel? How would you like to attend cocktail receptions with entertainment, waiters passing trays of delicious appetizers, and free drinks?
Oh yeah, and you get to spend two days with other bloggers. People who “get” you. People with whom you can discuss blogging without being asked what a “blob” is. It’s your chance to let your inner geek flag fly, baby, and it is FUN. I said it last year and I’ll say it this year too, everyone should go!
I got so much free swag that I couldn’t get it all into one photo, so here’s the first one:
I think my favorite swag from this group was the items from Revolution Health. T-shirts for each of my kids, a pedometer, and a small pouch that velcros onto your shoe to hold your house key while you are out exercising. But wait! There’s more!
At bottom right you can see this year’s version of last year’s “why the hell did you give us a bib?” gift, the Butterball Hot pad. Butterball turkey was a sponsor, and gosh, are they trying to make a statement that women should stay in the kitchen? NO. At least I don’t assume so. I assume that they are saying if you are in the kitchen, cooking, and you need a hot pad, why not think of the Butterball company as you are pulling your creation out of the oven? It’s product placement, pure and simple.
Next year, I want to take some kind of gift. It was fun to get something personalized from people. I missed Kristen’s condom “lollipops” and Mothergoosemouse’s glow stick necklace, but I did get Kari’s flashing duck and my favorite, Jen Lemen’s whole gift package:

What beautiful art work. And yummy chocolate, which my son ate most appreciatively! I’ve got other stories I can tell, about the party at the Whiskey Sky, Friday night’s Walk of a Thousand Cuts on my Feet, and Saturday’s Fun at the Navy Pier. Plus, I’ll catch you up on what my kids have been doing. And, I’ll keep trying to reply to all of your wonderful comments. I’ve MISSED you, my dear readers, and I’m so glad it’s not too late to get you back.

I think you should support what your heart tells you to support. After all, if you’re not happy it doesn’t matter what the rest of us thinks!
Great schwag photos, too!
Hey there,
I’m catching up on this discussion. I agree with Dana — you have to do what’s right for YOU and not anyone else. Just don’t undervalue your work, no matter what.
Love the photos. Wait, where’s that cool little cosmetic bag from in the second photo?!
Was really cool to meet you Elizabeth! Please upload that photo of us to Maya’s Mom!!

I think you have to be true to yourself. My main blog has always has posts about very disconnected topics that range the gamut, years before I ever started doing paid posts, so it wasn’t a very big stretch for me to post some really strange opps, but if you run a much more focused site, then you need to stay on focus because that’s why people come here.
Dana- That’s just it, I wasn’t happy writing about such strange topics. I still think PayPerPost is a great company, fun to work for, with incredible support and concern for their Posties, and I’m not turning my back on them either. But even those occasional PPP posts, done on MomReviews, and done well, can help add to my value as a writer in my opinion. They just have to be written in MY voice, not someone else’s.
We sure did get a lot of really cool stuff, huh? My husband took away the AOL thumb drive for himself, Nathan’s been playing with the portable network cables, and Kaitlyn’s been playing with the Butterball hot pads! Oh, I forgot to show the messenger bag and the laptop bag, I’ll have to get those in the next photo!
That’s some great swag. My only problem with paid posts is that nobody asks me to do them.
Charlene- You noticed I put the cosmetic bag right in the middle of the photo, right?! I love it! I will do some uploading to Maya’s Mom, I haven’t even been over there yet since I got back. And did no one take a photo of US together all weekend? I have you with Glennia, and that seems to be it! I could have sworn I took one of our whole lunch table. Let me know if you spot any on Flickr please!
Richard- It was when Joe from the PPP sales team said to me that if I’m not blogging about the things I love, like the PPP slogan says, then I am choosing the wrong opps, that made me realize that it’s NOT all about the money. It’s about choosing the right opps, doing a good job writing them, and enjoying some monetary compensation. But the money has to come last in that equation.
I’m still planning to go to PostieCon in November, are you?
WG- I’m surprised you haven’t been approached by some of the big blogging sites like Dot Moms, ClubMom, or Babble. Have they not READ your blog? Sheesh! Your writing is fantastic! I just don’t know what they want, obviously
And I am so glad that you have stuck around and are still reading. Thank you!
I just got in on this whole discussion too. I left you a comment on your previous post—in short, keep doing what you’re doing because I love your blog, PPP and all.
After you read that “4-Hour Work Week” book, could you give me some pointers on how to make that happen?
Alison-Thank you, that means a lot to me right now
And yeah, the four hour workweek book was a gift from The Experience Project, a website that is really unique and invited me and a bunch of other bloggers to a reception on Thursday night. I want to know more about how to make that happen myself! I’ll read it and review it on MomReviews.
I thing you should follow your heart. I think you know what to do. I’m sure everything will go great. I give you my support!
Todd!
Todd- Thank you for your kind words of support!
Elizabeth,
Based on this post it seems that Chris has a real problem with Mommy Bloggers that make paid postings without consideration of blog topic or the readers. Isn’t this a miscalculation on the bloggers part, and not necessarily the fault of PPP? All PPP simply does it provide a marketplace for advertisers and bloggers to interact. Like true capitalists, we don’t necessarily want to interfere and regulate these interactions.
This is why I was so adamant that our Posties only take opps that are relevant to their site’s topic. By doing this, the readers wont get bored with irrelevant content AND it provide a better value for the advertiser because readers will be more likely to buy the product you are promoting.
Again, I love your site and reading what you have to say! Great work!
Joe
i’m just reading about all the blogher happenings and i, too, believe you have to be true to yourself and do what makes you happy. there will always be nay-sayers (no matter what you do). stay true to yourself.
hugs.
and my oh my - nice schwag!
btw, i’m having a contest over at my blog, please feel free to chk it out.

thanks.
and thanks for all the help you’ve given me w/ wordpress. i appreciate it!
Joe- That is why it was so valuable to me as a Postie to be able to speak directly with you at BlogHer. When I said I wasn’t “getting paid to blog about the things I love” and you said I shouldn’t take an opp for something I don’t love, it was a real eye-opener. But the problem PPP is going to have attracting more Mommybloggers is that you really don’t have many opps that relate directly to parenting. The baby shower decorations post was the closest I have ever come to a parenting-related topic since I started in April.
What my readers are saying is that it makes no sense for me to write about hair tranplants in Florida, and they are right. I was taking those posts purely for the money, which defeats the whole purpose of getting paid to blog about the things you love. I have re-set my categories to Household/Parenting only, but I will also be moving all my PPP work to just my product review blog, where it makes more sense anyway. Unfortunately for me it is a PR0 blog, despite months of effort on my part to bump it up, but I know that takes time. Table for Five was almost two YEARS old when I started PPP and found that it was PR4. So I will hope for PR0 opps about parenting, and work on my traffic and links, and I know eventually I will see more opportunities on that blog.
Thanks for keeping the lines of communication open, Joe. I hope other Posties are planning to attend PostieCon so they can have this opportunity to meet the Team and get this kind of dialogue going. Is there a PostieCon badge I can put on my blog? I know there’s a BlogWorld one.
Amy- Thanks so much for your kind words of support. And OMG, do you know how BADLY I want that “Cute as a Bug” t-shirt??? My daughter Kaitlyn, who is 20 months old? My husband and I call her Katie-bug, because she had a onesie with a ladybug on it when she was an infant. If I don’t win your contest, I am totally buying one for her!!
Wow! cool stuff! I must try and come next year…
Can we attend even if we’re novices? Do we have to join BlogHer? Maybe I should anyway.
And I’m with the others. You do what feels right to you in your heart. Be true to yourself and do what’s right for you and your family! Read “I was a good mother before I had kids.” That’s what it’s all about baby! Doing what is right for you and your family!
You are very lucky that you have 2 other blogs that you can PPP on as well as this one. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I love your blog and try to read it religously. Most of your PPP posts are personal to you and I can tell they mean something to you! If you keep it up on this blog, I won’t go away!
thanks for showing all the swag, as well as answering my questions about what bloggers brought. looks very cool!
Waving hello to a compadre from BlogHer!
You must open that Christine Kane CD and listen to her. She’s become my latest ear worm. Fabulous song writer!
Most of the other swag I left in chi-town. and, hey I didn’t get all those t-shirts!! (not that they fit, but they’d make a nice quilt.) Sadly, I lost all the cloth neck-loops including the 2 I brought from home. (sigh)
Sounds like it was awesome. I would love to go! I guess that means I have one year to not only get the money together for it, but I have one year to make enough blogging friends to make this an enjoyable experience. Any tips, My Dear Blogging Friend?
Mimi- I had bloggers in my Workshop that were starting a brand new blog, so yes! BlogHer.org isn’t something you have to join, but it is a terrific website jam-packed full of blog posts on lots of great subjects, so I recommend checking it out! If you plan to attend BlogHer ‘08, I would be so happy!
And thank you for your kind words of support. Even as I sit here this morning typing this, I’m on the fence about what to do about the whole paid posting thing. I wouldn’t be able to do paid posts at all on MomCooks, because there are almost never any assignments about food. But MomReviews, definitely, if I could get the Page Rank up. We need to have “Operation improve my Page Rank”, and get everyone to list it in their blogroll and search for it on Google!
I’m so glad you are my friend, you always support me no matter what!
xoxo
Elizabeth
Landismom- It was and still is amazing to me how much stuff the sponsors brought. And on the last day, when they didn’t want to have to pack up and carry stuff back to the airport to take back home, they were giving stuff away in handfuls!
