Back in June, I woke up one Saturday morning and decided that I was ready to make a serious commitment to weight loss. I have a friend who writes a blog for ClubMom called The Amazing Shrinking Mom, and she lost 60 pounds by following a Glycemic Index Diet. I had already ordered the book she recommended, and it was sitting there on my bookshelf waiting for me. I made a shopping list, went to the grocery store, came home, and started the program.
And it WORKED! For the first time in 20 years of being overweight, I had found a plan that worked. I was eating three meals a day, but with more fiber and protein than I was used to, so I was too full for snacking in between. I made sure to drink lots of water and get my fruits and veggies in, everything you do on a Glycemic Index diet, and it was working. I lost seven pounds in ten days! However, I haven’t lost any more weight yet, see above, re: potato chips.
It’s an easy diet to follow too, you don’t even have to buy a book, you can just use an online Glycemic Index Chart to look up the Glycemic Index of foods. Any food with a G.I. of 55 or less is safe to eat as long as I eat a reasonable portion. There is just one problem- potato chips. They are my absolute weakness. I try not buying them, but ladies, tell me you have never had one of those cravings, maybe just before a certain time of the month, when you will run someone over in the road if you have to in order to get that food that you have to eat, or someone will suffer. For me, it’s potato chips.
So, I had a little slip-up, but it’s not too late. I’m getting right back on the Glycemic Index bandwagon, and I intend to stay on it. It really needs to become a new way of eating, rather than a “diet” I go on and off of. I know if I keep my fridge and pantry stocked with low G.I. food and spend a few extra minutes chopping veggies and fruit, I can reach my first Weight Loss Goal, which is to lose 30 pounds by October. If anyone wants more info about the plan, like the books I am using, leave a comment or email me, I love talking about it! Just don’t send me any potato chips.

Yeah, I did great on a low-carb, high protein diet…and I was never hungry. But when I fell off the wagon, I crashed!!
I was all set to get back to exercising and then well the foot.
I seriously hate body/weight issues.
Good luck! I know you can do it. You may even inspire me.
Don’t be suprised if I come back asking for the info.

ML-I love talking about how great the Glycemic Index diet is, so I’m happy to share what I’ve learned so far if you feel inspired. I’m so sorry about your foot-is it in a cast ?
Are you allowed one or two chips, even? I just can’t imagine stopping there though… it’s probably just better not to tempt oneself. I must say potato chips and french fries are my biggest weaknesses, as well.
I should probably read up on the Glycemic Index Diet… your enthusiasm for is quite contagious.
I think you and I should make a pact – a eating right pact. You know I have this prescription here, the last thing my neurologist really thinks might work to ease my 3 – 5 migraines a week before putting me on meds that give me vertigo so bad I can’t move my head from side to side – and then trying to give me medication to ease the vertigo… It’s called a steroid burst. You start out at 7 pills A DAY and then tapper off one pill every day until you take none. I asked her of the risks and side effects and she did mention that I would need to watch what I ate for awhile. So on my window sill it sits, untaken, unopened. I keep saying “after *insert special occasion or goody in the house that needs to be eating up* I’ll start.” Trouble is that there’s ALWAYS this or that occasion or goody in the house.
A year ago Monkey and I did South Beach – did it right through Thanksgiving without really any trouble at all. We both lost significant weight. I lost nearly 20 lbs and he was near 30. Then Christmas came. And it wasn’t the goodies, the candy, etc. that caused us to fall. It was the fact that you can’t really come home from Christmas shopping all day and order a South Beach friendly pizza. And your tired (especially me) and you DON’T feel like cooking. So like MammaLoves, when we fell off we fell so hard that every single resolve-bone in our body was broken. And we haven’t got back up yet – we’ve gained back all of the weight we lost (Monkey 15 lbs, me NOW all but 2, but I had gained all 3 back) and I hate it.
Call me tomorrow and we’ll collaborate on BBB, and get together a whole network of support and encouragement and (for me the biggest factor) accountability. If no one is looking when I sneak that cookie than I’m much more liable to eat it. What do you say, sis?
er that says Monkey added 15lbs to and I had added 3 to our original starting weight (I’m nearly a foot shorter, it matters more for me than him lol) but thank goodness I’ve lost 5 since that cap of pre-diet weight plus three. I didn’t want it to sound like I was whining that I had gained 2 or three lbs back lol. For some reason the plus signs didn’t show up in the post.

Faimous- Actually, 14 plain potato chips works out to about 54 on the G.I., so technically they would be allowed. But my problem is, if there is a bag of chips in the house, I want to eat a lot more than 14 of them. I really do love them a whole lot.
That website I linked to, http://www.glycemicedge.com/, has great information, charts, and links to the G.I. diets offered by eDiets and Nutrisystem Nourish. Check it out!
I’d be losing weight faster if there were no FOOD. Am addicted. Send help.
Potato chips are one of the reasons I don’t diet. I can’t imagine any diet out there allows them – and I can’t live without them.
I know that’s bad, but it’s the truth.

Chirky- I knew you’d understand! Am also addicted to food, dammit. Want to go live in a cave and have a gourmet diet chef deliver three meals a day with no leftovers. Wanna come with?
The key for me (and I told you I’ve battled my weight all my life and then lost more than 100 lbs) was having something “click.” I got past this feeling that if I slipped up once – the diet was over. Plus, I somehow convinced myself there would always be “one more donut.” That I could just eat a little and the food would still be available tomorrow, next week – hell.. next year. Anything that tastes good this second can be put down and re-purchased tomorrow. That was my biggest obstacle.
I see that part of myself in tiny Faith as she clutches the bag of donuts – sobbing there are only three left – three for her and only “none” for me. LOL!! We are the great food hoarders. Someone somewhere in my family must have convinced us we needed to stock up “just in case” and it became part of our genetic make-up.
I think you’re doing awesome (and I hate that word). You looked fantastic at BlogHer – simply RADIANT!! You can do whatever you want to do. I’m so proud of you!!
Big hugs!!
Now I’m off to find cute pics of Kaitlyn!
xo
*holy hell this was a long comment – am I procrastinating packing.. or what???
Maybe you can buy those little tiny bags of potato chips that are meant for kids’ lunches? They must have about 4, I mean 14, chips in there, huh? Then it would be easier to stop….opening another one of those bags would hopefully set off some inner alarm.
I’m one to talk…my weakness is Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. And, I love the Reese’s peanut butter hearts, Easter eggs, pumpkins, and Christmas trees. YUM!!!
Time for a potato chip ban! I love them, too, Elizabeth.

RWA- You can have potato chips even on a Glycemic Index diet, because 14 plain ones has a G.I. of 54. But that’s if you can only have 14 and then stop. Which for me? No.

Holli-Even though I know reading this email means you are ON THE COMPUTER and not PACKING, young lady (!!), i just have to say that looking at you now, no one would ever know that you have lost 100 pounds. I don’t have quite that much to lose but it’s not far off, and although I try setting those little goals (just lose 10 pounds. Okay, just lose five pounds. Okay, just lose TWO pounds), I always find a reason to quit before I have even really started.
After you have moved, and UNPACKED (you are going to unpack ALL the boxes this time, right?!?), I may contact you for some advice. I refuse to believe that my metabolism is so screwed up that I can’t lose weight. No way. There has to be a way, somehow, to make it work for me.
Fortunately for me, Kaitlyn has not picked up on any of my food issues, but I do see it in my boys. And I need to nip that shit in the bud NOW, before I screw up my daughter. Oh, and the compliment about BlogHer? THANK YOU!!

Alison- That is a great idea, thank you! I can buy those packages of chips, and treat myself to one when I get the craving.
I do like a good Peanut Butter Cup, especially those tree ones at Christmas, even though they are just the regular kind shaped into a tree, they still taste extra good!
I also crave chocolate pretty badly right before “that time of the month”, but one Snickers, frozen and then slightly thawed, usually does the trick. If not? Coldstone Creamery’s GermanChocolateKake ice cream

Graham- No, no bans, then I’ll just want them more! I like Alison’s suggestion to buy the little packages meant for kid’s lunches.

Potato chips are my weakness too!
I actually did really well on the Curves Diet and the Body For Life workout before I got pregnant with Sam. I lost 30 lbs and was able to keep it off and even after Sam was born the diet and eating habits stayed with me and I’m about where I was before I got pregnant.
But, a month at my parents and all hell breaks loose. Ice cream, chocolate, cookies, chips and all sorts of tasty treats that should not be consumed on a daily basis… However, I was on vacation!
But now, I’m doing the MyFitnessPal thing that I got through your website! And I’ve lost 8 lbs so far in 2 weeks. Yay me! Of course I have to keep track of what I eat, but the website makes it really easy!
And I’m jogging/running 4 times a week too. That helps!

says:
Mimi- Well, your Mom does have yummy treats in her kitchen
And that ice cream parlor right down the street doesn’t help either, I’m sure.
I’m so happy that you are using MyFitnessPal. 8 pounds in two weeks is awesome! But jogging and running? Yeah, I can’t do those. I would put my own eyes out with my boobs if I tried to run
Congratulations!
I started losing weight as soon as I stop eating bread. However, for unknown reasons, I was said to never mix potato chips with bread. That mixture can damage your health. I don’t know how much veracity there is in the above affirmation.
