Next month, on September 16th, I am going to walk 5 kilometers around the M.S.U. campus, participating in the 2007 Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk. No one in my family has suffered with Alzheimer’s disease, but it is affecting almost 5 million people in our country, and millions more all over the world. Alzheimer’s starts by robbing the victim of their memory, and then progresses through the body until the person can no longer chew or swallow, control their bodily functions, or even breathe.

Research has brought some hope in the form of medications that can halt the progression of the symptoms, but research costs money. The Alzheimer’s Association organizes fundraising walks all over the country every year, to raise both money and awareness of the importance of Alzheimer’s research.
