My grandfather clock has a history!

Thanks so much to everyone who emailed me asking about our new grandfather clock! I had no idea so many people were interested in them. My Grandma bought the clock from a company called Colonial Manufacturing company, and from the card stuck to the bottom of the clock base, I was thrilled to realize that what I currently have in my dining room is a Howard Miller clock.

Howard Miller clocks is the world’s largest grandfather clock maker. Howard Miller learned the craft of clockmaking from Germany’s Old-World masters in the Black Forest region. Upon returning to the states, Miller established his own clock company in Zeeland, Michigan, and created a clock that “honored the past — and focused on the future”. If I were to choose a new Howard Miller clock, possibly to hang in our back room which doesn’t have a clock at the moment and has the perfect place for one, I would choose this Howard Miller Original Moment in Time clock. I think it is beautiful:

That website I just linked to, 1-800-4clocks.com, sells everything from antique clocks to new atomic clocks, has a page to order an appraisal of an antique clock, and even has it’s own blog. I browsed through the blog’s categories, and read with interest this post about Atomic Clocks. And then I looked back through the Howard Miller grandfather clock pages again, trying to find the closest match to my clock. Although ours has a wider scroll at the top, and columns that are more rounded, this is pretty close. My clock:

It’s interesting, looking up the history of a piece of furniture, trying to figure out where it might have come from, what the history of the company is. My Grandma really gave me a special gift when she gave me my beautiful grandfather clock.
