Disney’s The Jungle Book on DVD Oct. 2nd!

Tomorrow, which is Tuesday, October 2nd, Walt Disney’s The Jungle Book 2 Disc Platinum Edition DVD is being released. My family received an advanced copy for free in exchange for this review. And I am so glad we did, because our video copy of The Jungle Book is pretty worn out, and you will not believe how amazing the movie looks fully restored on DVD! This special 2 Disc Edition celebrates the 40th Anniversary of this Jumpin’ Jungle Classic, including “Spectacular Restoration with Enhanced Picture and Sound”, and they are not kidding. It looks amazing.

The Jungle Book was the last movie that Walt Disney personally touched. For this special DVD, not only can you see animal favorites Bagheera, the wise panther, happy-go-lucky bear Baloo, and the menacing tiger Shere Khan, but also a special NEW character. Rocky, the near-sighted, short-tempered, hilarious rhinocerous, was created for the original film but not used, and has been discovered and brought to the movie in the Bonus Feature “The Lost Character: Rocky The Rhino”.

And let’s talk about the Bonus Features! A whole disc full of them, and for me, if I’m going to buy a “Special Edition” (or even a regular edition) DVD, I like them to be packed with extras. The Jungle Book doesn’t disappoint in that regard, the Bonus Disc includes the Rocky the Rhinocerous Bonus Feature, plus all these great extras:

• The Bare Necessities: The Making of The Jungle Book
A comprehensive look at the last animated film that Walt Disney produced using existing archival footage in addition to new interviews with Richard Sherman, Brad Bird, Glen Keane, Eric Goldberg, James Baxter, Will Fi’nn, Andreas Deja, Burny Mattinson Ted Thomas, Bruce Reitherman, John Culhane, John Canemaker and Neal Gabler—plus a never-before-seen collection of artwork and treatments from the film.
• Disney’s Kipling: Walt’s Magic Touch on A Literary Classic
A discarded film treatment from 1963 includes scenes from Kipling’s “Mowgli Stories” and more are used to illustrate Walt’s interpretation of the literary masterpiece
• The Lure of The Jungle Book
Many of today’s biggest names in animation were inspired to pursue their careers after seeing The Jungle Book; this feature examines this phenomenon and features new interviews with Brad Bird, Andreas Deja, Sergio Pablo, Will Finn and Eric Goldberg.
• Mowgli’s Return to the Jungle
Learn about nature filmmaking and the experience of making The Jungle Book firsthand from Bruce Reitherman, the voice of Mowgli.
• Baloo’s Virtual Swingin’ Jungle Cruise
Join everyone’s favorite bear in this set-top and DVD-ROM game on an adventure through the jungle: enjoy fun activities and musical challenges, but keep an eye out because there’s no telling what’s on the other side of the river bend!
• Audio Commentary
Combines comments from current animators with audio from the original creative team who made the film
• English Learning Feature
• Still Frame Art Gallery

I have clips!

Bonus Clip – “Inspired” Disney animators show how The Jungle Book directly inspired characters and animation techniques from recent Disney classics. Windows Media Player Version Quicktime Version

Bonus Clip – “Voice of Mowgli” Father & director-Bruce Reitherman (voice of Mowgli) discusses his father, The Jungle Book’s director Woolie Reitherman Windows Media Player Version Quicktime Version

Bonus Clip – “Pearls of wisdom” Bruce Reitherman (voice of Mowgli) discusses his father’s (director Woolie Reitherman) storytelling wisdom Windows Media Player Version Quicktime Version

Wow! It’s rated “G”, by the way, although technically the Bonus Features aren’t rated, I didn’t see anything that concerned me while Kaitlyn watched it. It’s 78 minutes long, which was too long for Kaitlyn to absorb in one sitting, but she was fascinated by Bagheera, who she kept pointing to and making her “Meow” sound.

Retail price for the DVD is $29.99, but I found the 2-Disc Jungle Book DVDon Amazon.com for an amazing $14.99! What a great price!

I really appreciated receiving this DVD and being able to review it and tell you all about it. I hope you get a chance to see it, and that you can introduce your children to this Disney Classic!

I really like the Jungle Book, but I’m not sure I’ve ever seen Jungle Book 2. So many of our Disney movies are on video. It would be fun to replace them all with DVDs.

Also, I’m a little behind on telling you, but I’m passing the Nice Matters award back to you – because I can! And because you are extremely nice. Also, you will find the gentleman’s version there to pass along to the nice gentleman bloggers you know. (I went looking for one – gentleman’s award, not nice gentleman bloggers. I already knew some of those.)

Anna-The DVD coming out tomorrow is the original Jungle Book! And the old Disney movies look so much better on DVD, too.

Thank you so much for passing back the Nice Matters Award-you are so sweet! I resized it so it would fit in my sidebar, it’s on the left. Thanks again!

  12. You got a copy for free? I had to buy mine! LOL! I love this movie and am giving away a copy on my blog!
