While I was at the salon getting my hair colored and cut tonight, my husband was in charge of getting our pumpkin carved for Halloween. We had one of those carving kits you can buy with the plastic scoop and little saw, plus a book of Halloween templates to put over the pumpkin and trace. Chris looked at one, then sketched it out freehand on the pumpkin. He had the kids help scoop out all the pulp and separate the seeds, then did the carving. He put a candle in it to see how it would look lit from the inside, and it freaked Kaitlyn OUT. Here’s some photos:
Pretty cool! That’s why he’s in charge of the pumpkin carving, if I had tried to do it, I would have ended up with two triangle eyes and a rectangle mouth, at best. Have you carved a pumpkin for Halloween yet?

Hello and welcome to Table for Five! I'm Elizabeth, and this blog started in September 2005 as a way for me to participate in the Mommy Blogging community. Of course it freaked Kaitlyn out - that is one scary looking pumpkin!!!
Love the pumpkin, though it’s definitely scary!
We did another princess pumpkin this year. I hope to have pics soon.
Amanda-Isn’t the pumpkin cool looking? My husband can make stuff like that just by making it up in his head, a skill I definitely do not possess
Nancy-Somehow I don’t think I could have convinced Chris to carve a princess into our pumpkin! Kaitlyn and I are outvoted
Happy Halloween!
That is one fancy pumpkin. I haven’t carved one in years. Maybe when Eva gets older and our dining room is less cluttered and he have some place to display one.
Drew-It’s been my experience that once you have kids, your dining room is NEVER less cluttered! lol
Did you buy Eva a Halloween costume? If so, is there a photo of it in Photo A Day? Because I need to see it!
Excellent! We have a few of those books from a few years ago — I think if we had a newer one Josh would have picked that!
We carved on Sunday — a bat coming out of a smaller pumpkin — and I used your pumpkin seed recipe yesterday and OMG! they are EXCELLENT! Just like I remembered from growing up! Thank you!
Awesome! That looks fantastic! Did you keep the seeds to roast ‘em?
Mimi-I’m so glad you had success with the pumpkin seeds! Did you do the extra soak overnight in the salt water or not? We got a disappointingly small amount of seeds out of ours.
Lanna-I did keep the seeds, but from that huge pumpkin, there were maybe a cup and a half of seeds, not as many as I was hoping for. But enough for us each to get a good handful.
That is a very cool pumpkin. We did this last week at my son’s school and then all of the pumpkins were lit up at the same time. Some of them were very good. Ours was Thomas the Tank engine. My kid can’t get enough Thomas. Here is where I found a free template to use: http://www.dltk-holidays.com/halloween/mpatterns.htm
bah I doubt you’ll even see this (I hope you do) but it must run in the family
here are ours this year http://www.wearelegend.net/images/punkins07.gif
Those are all free hand. Lou did the two on the right, Jack Skellington and Oogie Boogie from Nightmare before Christmas and I did the two on the right. The one back left (or second from the left) didn’t turn out right at all, especially in the dark. It was a lot better looking in my head. The pumpkin itself is all bumpy and mishapen and most of it’s carvings are based around those disfigurements. I thought it would be cool to try to carve sort of an evil version of Sloth Fratelli from The Goonies but instead it just looks like a short bus rider carved it with a spoon. The one on the far left though, that one’s my favorite. I’ve even got a little baggie of pumpkin guts in the fridge that I kept to drape out of his skull and mouth on Halloween night mwahahaha >:D
