Taking it One Day at a Time since 1996

I’ll admit it right now, we don’t try very hard to “reduce, reuse, recycle”. I got to thinking about how Christmas used to be about hanging strings of popcorn and cranberries on the tree you cut down yourself out in the woods. Why can’t we go back to that?
Holiday LEDs got me thinking about other ways to have a “greener” Christmas, including switching to LED Christmas lights. Did you know that LED Xmas lights use 80-90% less energy than incandescent lights? Outdoor LED Christmas lights especially make sense, since we have those on every night for over a month. Makes sense to use something that uses less energy and will last longer than regular lights.
Other ways to have a more sustainable holiday include buying holiday cards and wrapping paper made from recycled materials, or using pieces of last year’s Christmas cards to make gift tags. Instead of wrapping a gift in paper, you could make the wrapping part of the gift by using a cloth or blanket and tying it around the gift. Team up with friends to do holiday shopping to help reduce emissions that pollute the environment, plus, it’s fun to shop with friends!
It’s little things like those that add up. You can lessen the impact of your holiday celebrations on the environment, and still have a great Christmas. Besides, kids don’t care what the gift is wrapped in, they just want what’s inside it!

We bought the LED Christmas lights last year. I am happy to say that I do believe that we do not have a single incandescent bulb in the house anywhere. We use the compact fluorescent bulbs everywhere and our electric bill dropped in half. The LED Christmas lights are much brighter than incandescents too, so they’re especially good for outside for that reason as well. I love your ideas about gift wrapping - which you know I’m always trying to find cool ways to wrap gifts and did use to work for a non-profit environmental grassroots organization for 3 years hehe
I’m already getting variations on the ideas you’ve posted, thanks!
I wanted to post an “update” to this… Oddly enough the night “after” I replied to this post, we went out and bought LED nightlights, LOVE them. Can’t believe someone hadn’t thought of them sooner and if they have, why we haven’t thought to get them sooner. They’re bright, you can have the sensor ones on all the time and not ever worry about them wearing out and Monkey said he read that they cost 25 cents a YEAR to run if you left them on 24/7!
Everyone is waiting for the Christmas day.
Wow, it’s cool that even led Christmas lights can be more green than traditional christmas lights.
