There’s this gigantic Internet entity, let’s call them “Oogle”. They have the largest search engine, the biggest RSS feed reader, a very popular email service. And a formula. A magic, secret formula that is used to calculate a magic number that we will call “RageCrank”. Almost everyone who has a website or blog is assigned a “RageCrank” based on a mysterious algorithm calculated from traffic and inbound links.
Or at least, they used to have one. Do me a favor-if you don’t already have it, install the Firefox Search Status Extension. It just takes a minute, and it puts two small bars on the bottom of your screen. One that will show you your “RageCrank”, and the other that will show you your Alexa score (another website that gives out rankings based on traffic).
Now, open a new tab, and click on your blog or website. What happens? Does any part of the “RageCrank” bar turn green? If so, hold your mouse over it to see what “Oogle” considers your “RageCrank” to be. You know what I see when I look at this blog and at MomReviews? NOTHING.
That’s right! “Oogle” has taken away my “RageCrank”, and that of many, many, many other people. The boards at that big paying-me-to-blog company (that I don’t want to mention by name because I have read that “Oogle” might decide to penalize me even further for even having the words in a post) are exploding with posts about the dropping of “RageCrank”, and I understand that the AOL boards are doing the same thing. This is affecting a LOT of bloggers and website owners.
But here’s the thing, and I’m sorry if it’s naive, but it’s the way I feel-”Oogle”, I hate to tell them this, but they do not OWN THE INTERNET. The Internet was invented as a way to share information, plain and simple. “Oogle” might have it’s fingers in a lot of pies, but it is not the only game in town. There are other search engines, other RSS readers, other email systems. And I for one intend to give those other companies more of my business. I have an account with “Oogle Reader”, but I also have Bloglines, so I’ll stick to that for now. I have “OogleMail”, but I also get email from my blog host, and it works just fine for me. It even filters spam messages for me.
And there are plenty of other search engines, like Site.info, Yahoo, Lycos. I’m not saying I’m never using any “Oogle” products again, because I know I probably will. But I refuse to be bullied. It’s MY BLOG, and just because I choose to sell my own text ads rather than use “Radsense”, that should be my choice. And it’s not fair of “Oogle” to arbitrarily decide who can and can’t have “RageCrank”. Unless they are going to take it away from everyone, or make it a service you have to pay for and subscribe to, then there has to be one set of rules that apply to everyone, whether they use “Radsense” or not.
I could go on and on, I am so upset about this. I have companies sending me review assignments assuming that this blog still has it’s old ranking, but it doesn’t! I don’t want to spend valuable time writing reviews that will later get rejected. GAH! ENOUGH! And if you are wondering why I used fake names in this post, it’s because I also read on a certain message board that “Oogle” might also be penalizing people for even mentioning this, since it’s “proprietary information”. Yeah, whatever.
And that’s all I’m going to say about “Oogle”.

It’s a real pisser to say the least…..
Sorry for the double post. They got me as well and it could not have come a worse time . This reminds me of some sort of dictatorship…..
I heard they were evacuated from their offices because of a ’strange’ package that looked suspicious. I guess someone was royally pissed beyond pistivity about the whole bullying thing too. I’m sorry to read this. I hope it gets taken care of quickly!
Have a great weekend.
Page rank is just a small part of a successful website. The question is, how much of your traffic is actually coming from that search engine, and how much do you think you will really lose because of the drop in rank. (Did you say they took away your ranking ENTIRELY? I bet that changes.)
Take a deep breath. You’re gonig to be fine.
If you do get a lot from inbound links, that will continue. You probably also get a lot from Technorati and other sources.
As for advertisers — the professionals know that traffic counts more than pr.
I’m guessing the companies will adapt and realize that nothing has changed about your blogs, or anyone else’s, and they just won’t be able to put as much stock in “Oogle’s RageCrank”. I’m thinking “Oogle” better get their act together, and soon, or they will have lost all credibility.
Heehee… the word oogle just makes me giggle. Not the bullying part, but the word. Nope, not too mature over here.
Well I have made the decision never to use their services again, and here’s why.
I used to use their search engine at least 10 times a day. Oogle reader, I used to be in there from the time I got online to the time I logged off, mostly. Omail, I have about 50 accounts with and I used to visit their site to check those accounts and make sure nothing got trapped in the spam bins. I was using Oogle Calendar and on average I would be there 3-5 times a day. I used to use blogger, and I would be there 5-10 times a day. Add all that up and just me alone was giving them quite a bit of traffic.
You know how we look at that alexa bar and how we watch our stats? Oogle do that too - only their stats can affect their stock prices. If you add up all the people they’ve targeted with their RageCrank drops - and if we all committed to stopping using them - that would cause quite a dip.
We have given them the power to think that they own the internet. Don’t you think that is something we should take back? How can we take it back? By changing the way we do things.
Nobody likes change. I know that. However this is a change I am prepared to make because I believe I have been a part of the problem. I have trusted Oogle, I have used their services and now here they are sticking a massive knife in my back!
I’m done. I’m never using their stuff again. I’m actually going to block it, so that there is no way it can be accessed from this computer. I’ve already removed my bookmarks to it.
I am not giving any of my internet business to a company that thinks it is ok to bully stay at home parents over text links. If they have such an issue with it, they should be speaking to the companies who bought the links. A company of over 13,000 employees taking on individual bloggers, one by one? That’s unacceptable behaviour.
So please, join me in saying goodbye to Oogle today.
Say Goodbye To Google Today
Cheers,
Snoskred
Oops! I was so careful referring to them as Oogle there, and then I put the wrong name in the link. If you want to fix that you can.
Cheers,
Snoskred
I think we’re all feeling the pain. Some say to not pay attention to it, but how can we not when it affects what paid activities we can do with our own site. I think it is over simplifying to say just focus on your content. Until advertisers realize what Oogle has done and change their own standards, we are the ones that are paying the price. I for one am removing their ads from my site (since I’ve made so much change with them this will hurt them more than me). I’m hoping advertisers are aware of what is going on and make some change soon to their requirements.
I do think advertisers are catching on. I’m about to see one of my more profitable weekends ever, thanks to several who’ve contacted me to say that they could not possibly care less about PR. They like my traffic. That’s cool with me.
I do feel your pain, though. One of my sites went from a PR5 (with over 300,000 backlinks) to a PR3 (with even more backlinks). It gets a decent amount of traffic, quite a bit of which is from the source in question.
From that, I can only assume that RageCrank isn’t important in THEIR minds, either, or they’d have put us all back in the sandbox again.
I can see why you are so mad! My very little not so known place has a higher rank thank you! That even makes me mad because I don’t see how that could be! I should be the one with the lower rank cause I don’t do that much!
Messed up they are! Messed up! Wish I could give you my rank to help you out! You need it more than I do.
I hope the companies know what is going on and change things real fast!
Excellent post!! I’m pretty pissed at them myself.
Ohhhh…I had forgotten about my reader…it’s back to bloglines for me! Thanks for the reminder!
LOL, I love the wording you use on this post… for example “Lets call them… ‘Oogle’ “
