I live in the suburbs. I have an attached garage on my house, plus a long driveway that fits two cars easily. Every store I drive to has ample parking, and even when I need to venture into Downtown, I can always find metered street parking or park in a city garage for a few bucks an hour. People living in England? Not so lucky.
Parking is apparently not something readily available, because there are entire websites devoted to helping folks in the U.K. Rent a Parking Space. It’s called “contract parking”, and it lets the buyer purchase a parking space that belongs just to them. Some are garages or underground parking lots, but there is also private driveway parking for rent.
On the website http://www.parklet.co.uk/, sellers can rent out their spare parking spaces, including space in their driveways, an extra space in their apartment parking lot, or even space in an empty garage. The parking situation over there must be really bad if people can rent out a spot in their driveway to a stranger who just needs a place to park their car!
And it’s not cheap, either-a secure underground parking space accessable through gates activated remotely from the driver’s keychain, on one of London’s busiest streets (a street I myself have walked down), costs $250 a month. For the person who owns that space, that’s a pretty nice bit of pocket money every month! The next time I go to the Mall and I’m whining about how I have to park ten spaces away from the door instead of five, I’m going to remember people who have to park in someone else’s driveway in the U.K., and be grateful for having so much free, available parking

That happens mostly in London. It is very expensive, as you say.
Graham-It’s Marlybone Street where the parking is 250 pounds a month (I accidentally used the dollar sign in the post, not sure how to make the pound symbol). We really do take parking for granted where I live.
How much does car parking cost in NCP near DRURY LANE or in the SOHO area of LONDON?
