Last night I upgraded this blog to version 2.3.2 of Wordpress. I lost all of my categories.

Let me repeat that. I lost ALL. OF. MY. CATEGORIES. Two and a half years’ worth of posts, now all labelled “uncategorized”.

Wordpress Support’s suggestion was that I “drop all my database tables related to wordpress, check and rebuild them, and then run the upgrade again”.

I have no idea what that means.

Bluehost support says there is nothing wrong with my database tables.

I have no idea what to do except go through and re-categorize all those posts. I have no idea how many posts I have written-hundreds, for sure. Close to a thousand? Possibly. Great googley moogley, people.

If anyone knows what to do, and can explain it to my not-smarter-than-a-fifth-grader-brain, PLEASE speak up.

At least I get to create a new category for this post! Yippee.

P.S.-I created a category, the way you always do on the dashboard, by typing it into the box under “Categories” and clicking Add. Nothing happened. FRAK FRAK FRAK FRAK.

I wish I knew the answer for you there, because that stinks! I tried to upgrade and lost my whole darn blog so went back to the old version and got it back. Now I won’t upgrade.
Can you go back to the old version until you figure out a fix?
Good luck.

You could always go back to the previous version of WordPress and see if that doesn’t correct the problem. Just upload the older version and overwrite the existing files. Problems such as this are why you should always do a full backup of your existing files and the database before you upgrade. ;)

Wish I could help you out with this :( I hope you get it figured out soon.

I had that last problem happen to me a while back and it had something to do with the theme itself. I wound up dumping the theme, it didn’t work well witht WP 2.3.1. I am so NOT a techie person, and I had all this stuff, it makes me feel hot! (not in a good way!)

I’m sorry to hear you have had problems with the upgrade to WordPress 2.3.2 - It sounds like you may have had issues in the migration from the old categories tables in WordPress 2.2.x and the new taxonomy tables in WordPress 2.3.x

Well if you’ve been over to mummified times five, you’ll see that I did something wrong and ended up having to reinstall wordpress and losing my whole blog!

I hope you get your category problem worked out.
