Review of Satellite Internet

There I am in my bathroom blow-drying my hair, trying to get ready to leave to drop the kids off at my Dad and Stepmom’s (for the night! the whole night!), so Chris and I can drive to Jackson for his company’s Holiday Party (purposely held after Christmas so as to be non-denominational), which requires me to get dressed up and put makeup on and the whole shebang, when I realize, in one of those hand-clapped-to-forehead moments, that I have TWO reviews due. Today. And wow, that was a long sentence.

So! I would like to tell you all about satellite internet service, brought to you by Hughesnet. If you live in an area where DSL and Cable internet connections don’t reach, you can get a super-fast internet connection through the power of satellite. A satellite dish goes on your roof, connects to a modem, and there you go, downloading music from iTunes and watching videos on YouTube just like everybody else. HughesNet is a broadband connection, and it’s available to anyone in the lower 48 States with a clear view of the Southern sky. Groovy!

For the past 30 years, Hughes has been the leading provider of satellite broadband technology for consumers, businesses, and government. Hughes has now pioneered the technology that allows them to be the leading high-speed satellite internet provider as well. They bring internet into homes where DSL and cable can’t, offering an always-on connection that is thirty times faster than dial-up.

HughesNet offers three different plans depending on the download speed- “Home” which is 700 Kbps (25X faster than dialup), “Pro” which is 1000 Kbps (35x faster than dialup), and “ProPlus” at 1500 Kbps (50x faster than dialup). There are two types of pricing, the $0 Down plan, which charges nothing upfront for equipment and rolls the cost into the first 24 months of payment. Monthly cost starts at $79.99 for the “Home” plan and goes up from there. Or, pay upfront for the equipment which is $399.99 minus a $100 mail-in rebate, then $59.99 a month for the “Home” plan. The best way to find out all the costs for hooking up satellite internet is to contact HughesNet for more information.

I wonder if this would help my sister get internet. She lives in the mountains and they have no cable nor wireless internet. It is awful!

I have not read good reviews of the service and/or actual speed brought to customers by Hughes Satellite.

  5. From my understanding is that satellite internet can have some limitations, but in rural areas, there are not much of an option, but generally, is better than dial-up. Always get more info before you make “the Choice”. http://www.infodish.com.
