Too little, too late, Mr. President
I rarely get political on this blog, not because I don’t want to be controversial but because this is not a political blog, if that makes sense. But tonight the President is broadcasting a State of the Union address, and when I started thinking about what he was probably going to say, I found myself getting more and more steamed up about it.
If you haven’t heard, the economy is tanking. You probably already know this if you’ve been laid off, or have seen businesses in your area closing their doors, or have tried to find a new job. In an effort to bolster the economy and, I suppose, make us all feel better, the President has decided to give us all some money. That’s right. He’s going to give us some money so we can go out and spend it and put it back into the…economy.
Here’s an idea instead-why doesn’t he give businesses better tax rates so they can afford to stay open? Why doesn’t he create new jobs? President Roosevelt did just that during the Great Depression when he created the Works Progress Administration. What if that is where we are headed, towards another Depression? It’s terrifying.
And by the way, Mr. President, here’s another idea-figure out a way to lower gas prices. Do whatever you have to do, but get the price of gas down. In my opinion, it works like this:
*The price of gas goes up
*Companies have to pay more to put gas in the tanks of the trucks that deliver everything
*Therefore stores have to charge more for everything
*The prices are going up, but our paychecks aren’t
*Small businesses start losing customers who can’t afford the high prices
*Even if we can afford the higher prices, we can’t afford to put the gas in our cars to go shopping
So while it will certainly be nice to get a check this summer, is it really going to fix the economy?
I don’t know what is on the agenda for tonight’s Presidential address, but I’ll be listening. And feeling very worried for the immediate future of this country.

If only it could. I’m afraid to hear what he’s going to say tonite.

This check is simply a little bandaid that is just not going to do much for most people. I know we will likely put it toward the ever increasing cost of living.

Actually, gov’t interference is the worst thing that could (and will) happen to the economy. The Great Depression lasted so long *because* of gov’t interference. The whole mess would’ve righted itself much sooner given the chance. Best thing the gov’t could do is actually use and stick to their own budget. Gee, wonder why folks don’t see anything wrong with living above their means when the gov’t does? Grrr.
Oh, eta, the economy’s been on a slow downturn pretty much since Bush was elected. You don’t even want to know how much my stocks dropped in value after he was elected. It was really bad. As in a 3/4+ decline in value.
And they haven’t recovered yet. It’s just now the ick is picking up speed.
The price of petrol (gas) here is one of the highest in the world, which doesn’t help us too well.

I so feel the same way you do! They need to create more jobs and lower the price of gas. I have a theory…low gas prices equals larger profits. Or am I the only one who thinks this way? Could be though! I will listening as well. Though I fear the future.

I had to post my new favorite quote. I hope it inspires even just one person to do stop doing the one thing that, imo, got us all here in the first place…
“If once the people become inattentive to the public affairs, you and I, and Congress and Assemblies, Judges and Governors, shall all become wolves. It seems to be the law of our general nature, in spite of individual exceptions.” Thomas Jefferson.
He was warning us. Centuries ago Thomas Jefferson knew that as soon as people stopped paying attention, the government would “become wolves.” We stopped paying attention and we got screwed. I can’t even stress how hard we were screwed without it sounding pornographic. Then again it *IS* fairly obscene. We’re JUST NOW starting to pay attention again - but will we only pay attention long enough to let ourselves be lured into another false sense of security?
Love you, can’t wait to see you guys in a month!
