First-does anyone need a roommate for BlogHer? Now that the President has decided to bolster the economy by giving us all a nice big check in May (money that he actually doesn’t have, btw), I just might be able to swing BlogHer 08 in San Francisco after all! But the thing is, the rooms are limited and filling up fast, and I’d much rather have a roommate lined up before I start the search. So if you are going and still need a roommate, please email me. I guess it’s first-come first-served for the privilege of rooming with me…LOL!

Second-now that I am sitting up and taking nourishment as my Dad used to say, it’s time for a DVD review. If you haven’t already seen “Gone Baby Gone”, I am commanding you to RUN to the nearest video store and rent it. Like, TODAY. Because people, there are barely enough superlatives in the English Language to describe just how amazing/fantastic/terrific/wonderful this movie is.
Ben Affleck directed and co-wrote the screenplay based on a book by Dennis Lehane. The book takes place in Affleck’s hometown of Boston, and as he says in the Special Features, Boston itself becomes a character in the movie. Casting his younger brother Casey Affleck as Patrick Kenzie was nothing short of genius. You may think of Casey as the sidekick in all the Ocean’s Eleven movies, but let me tell you, Casey Affleck is a MAJOR movie star. He can and does carry this picture, albeit with a relaxed acting style that makes it seem like he is barely acting at all.
Broadway actress Amy Ryan stars as Helene McCready, the drug-addict mother of the missing girl, Amy Madigan plays her Aunt Bea, and Titus Welliver (“Deadwood”) her Uncle Lionel. Bea and Lionel hire private detectives Patrick and his girlfriend/partner Angie, played by Michelle Monaghan (“Mission Impossible III”) to look for the missing girl, and Patrick and Angie convince the local police that they can help by interviewing people in the neighborhood who don’t want to talk to the police.
Morgan Freeman is Captain Jack Doyle, Ed Harris is Detective Remy Bressant, and John Ashton is Detctive Nick Poole-Ashton is one of those actors that seems to have been in everything, but you’ll probably recognize him most as Detective Taggart from “Beverly Hills Cop”. The more Patrick and Angie talk to people and start unraveling the case, the more they start to realize that it is anything but a “simple” kidnapping. By the time Chris and I got to the climax of the movie, once we realized what was really going on, we could barely breathe. And even after the movie was over, we continued to talk about it.
I can’t stress enough how much you should see this movie. Even if you don’t like the idea of a plot about a kidnapped child (and who does?), you need to see it for the sheer force of the acting. You are not going to believe how excellent Casey Affleck is-and I wouldn’t be surprised, in fact, I HOPE, that this movie means he will move up in the Hollywood hierarchy and start getting bigger and better roles. He is an actor to watch, for sure.
As always, you can purchase the DVD from Amazon.com by using this link to the “Gone Baby Gone” Amazon page. I hope you like it as much as I did.
