I clicked a link I found on TheGoodBlogs**, and came across this article by 1 Good Reason-Google and Microsoft are both making some major changes that will affect many bloggers. First of all, a new version of Internet Explorer is coming out, so those of you who use that will need to update and then see how the changes affect your site.
And as for Google, they have announced that they are going to begin to consider the load times of a website when figuring Page Rank. If you use Google Ads or Adwords, the longer your page takes to load, the more your ads will cost, and your search engine positions will be affected. You’ll get less traffic from Google, basically.
I remember when I had Page Rank, back before Google cruelly snatched it away. But never mind that-the point is, that article by 1 Good Reason had a link to a Web Page Analyzer that scans your page and tells you how long it takes to load at different connection speeds, and what exactly it is that is slowing down your page load time.
For me, it’s pretty much everything on my sidebars. Those badges that display all the sites I hold near and dear to my heart, the award buttons, and even my ChipIn Donation widget, are all slowing the site down way too much. So, I will have to move awards and badges off the main site and onto separate pages. I’ve replaced the ChipIn widget with a PayPal donation button and some text, I’m hoping with my fingers and toes all crossed that I’ll get some donations to help me get to BlogHer-and thank you so much the five of you who have donated already.
Anyway, hopefully the changes I make will help the site load faster. It’s so hard not to get seduced by badges and buttons, people work so hard on them and it’s like when we used to wear jean jackets with pins all over the front, except on our blogs instead. And who knows, maybe some day Google will come back and say “hey, Table for Five is awesome and deserves to have Page Rank”.
It could happen.
**Ironically, one of the scripts slowing down the load time the most is the widget for TheGoodBlogs. **

Hello and welcome to Table for Five! I'm Elizabeth, and this blog started in September 2005 as a way for me to participate in the Mommy Blogging community. I'm married with three terrific kids-boys ages 11 and 9 and a 2 year old daughter. Things I love include my family, coffee, Diet Coke, TV, reading, and Target.
Please contact me at table4five AT gmail DOT com if you would like to discuss anything I've posted here, place a text or button ad, send me a product to review, or provide a guest post. Thank you for stopping by!
Thanks for the wonderful post and the link. I’ve been taking it one day at a time for 10 years now myself.
I would like to point out that any good SEO (such as myself) could get your Google Page Rank fixed fairly easily. But with Blogs its Technorati that matters anyway and you have nothing to worry about ranked 18,625 out of 100+ million.
BTW- Google took my Page Rank away too. Which is especially irksome for an SEO Dude.
Thanks,
Chris
That sounds strange having this sort of penalty. I think it so bizarre.

Chris-Thanks for the comment. I keep taking things off and re-running the Web page speed report, and it’s not getting much better. It seems like my blog theme itself is running a lot of images that are slowing things down.
Google won’t say for sure of course, but it’s widely believed that those of us who write paid blog posts, especially for PayPerPost like I do, will never get our Page Rank back. If you have any info I could use that might overturn that, please by all means let me know. This is a good blog and Google shouldn’t punish me because I monetize it.
Thanks again,
Elizabeth
Thanks for the info! I have moved some of my photo/badge/links/awards to other pages with just a text link to them. I like having all of that on my front page, but I know that besides making for slower upload times, it also starts looking a little busy. *sigh*

This is bad news for photography blogs, which are among the most popular but take FOREVER to load. I think I hate G$$gle.

Page loading speed has always been an irksome annoyance to me. However, I can see how some people might find waiting for over a minute to be quite annoying.
One thing I do is try to smoosh down any images I use at http://www.myimager.com - it’s a free jpg/gif optimizer that decreases file sizes without losing an appreciable amount of visual quality.

I’ve found it’s not so slow in in Firefox.
Oh well.

I saw that article too and I checked my main sites loading speed and it’s terribly slow. I’m actually waiting for a new theme to be made but it won’t be ready until mid April. I know my theme is at least half of my sites problem.
BTW you do have some pagerank again. It looks like the Google Fairly stopped by! Stopped by a few of my sites too.
