Catch a buzz with BEE MOVIE

Oh come on, like I could resist using that in a post title! From the imagination of comic genius Jerry Seinfeld comes BEE MOVIE, which he wrote and produced, and also provided the voice for the main character, Barry Bee Benson. Barry and his best friend Adam (the voice of Matthew Broderick) have graduated from high school and college (high school took a few days, college took 15 minutes), and now they are ready to choose the career they will have for the rest of their lives. While Adam is ready to accept whichever job is available, Barry wants more. He envies the “Pollen Jocks” who get to go outside into the world every day. While trying to impress a girl bee, he gets challenged by a Pollen Jock to suit up and come out with them, and he accepts.

This is a whiz-bang of a film. Everything moves quickly, including the dialogue-we had to rewind a couple of times because our laughter drowned out a line. And once Barry gets outside, the flying scene is incredible, you almost think they strapped a little camera to a real bee to see how they fly. Barry meets a human lady named Vanessa (voiced by Renee Zellweger), and in the biggest “suspend your disbelief” moment I’ve had in a long time, Barry and Vanessa become friends. He learns that humans are eating honey, which he considers stealing. Just as an aside, what would he think was being done with all the honey the bees were making every day? Anyway, he decides to sue the bees, and he sets off to round up as many bees as possible to come to the trial.

Seinfeld rounded up some great talent to do the voice work in this movie-John Goodman as a Southern District Attorney, Chris Rock as a mosquito, plus Patrick Warburton, Ray Liotta, Kathy Bates, Barry Levinson, even Oprah Winfrey as Judge Bumbleton.

With plenty of jokes, gags, and laughs, BEE MOVIE is fun and enjoyable. It is rated PG, there are a few mildly suggestive jokes, but I would say kids five and up will find it funny and parents will enjoy watching it too. There are two versions available on DVD, the regular disc and then a two-disc “Very Jerry” edition, which is what I have. It’s about eleven dollars more, but you get two discs of special features, all of which are entertaining on their own. The features include:

*Commentary by Jerry
*Jerry’s 16 “TV Juniors”-these are live-action shorts with Jerry pitching his movie to Dreamworks, showing us around the studio, even showing what a bootleg BEE MOVIE bought from a street vendor might look like (a lot like Sabado Gigante, actually). These had me laughing out loud all the way through.
*Alternate Endings and Lost Scenes
*We Got The Bee music video
*Inside the Hive: The Cast

and more. Here’s a link to a time-lapse movie showing a “BEE swarm” promoting the movie–busy-bee-time-lapse.mov

If you like your DVDs to come with Bonus Features like I do, it’s worth the eleven bucks to get the 2-Disc set. Want it now? Use this Amazon link:

we saw this in the ‘cheap’ theater here in town.

thank goodness because it was EMPTY and my son ran up and down the aisles while we kept shushing him because we didn’t want to miss the movie. :)

Tanyetta-I guess it was good that the theater was empty! That’s why we haven’t yet taken Kaitlyn to a movie :)

I saw this movie during a long flight to the US recently. With Seinfeld in the movie I had to see it, but it wasn’t as hilarious as I had expected it to be.

Among recent animation movies, Ratatouille is my favorite. The Pixar guys are the best at this!

Shantanu-I agree, it wasn’t hilarious, but you can definitely see how hard Jerry Seinfeld worked to get it made!

I do love Pixar as well, and I’m looking forward to Wall-E coming out.
