I woke up this morning feeling very much like the Universe was conspiring against me or something. Yesterday, our cars were ransacked and Nathan’s MP3 player was stolen. Last night we discovered the furnace wasn’t working, and a few minutes ago, I wrote a check for $618.00 for a new valve plus diagnostic and labor. Guess how I’m going to cover that check?
By scraping together the $300 I have saved for BlogHer and the $300 I have saved for our family vacation this year. The six of you who have made a donation to my BlogHer fund? I will pay you back, I promise. I’m so disheartened that I don’t even know if I want to plan to go to the One-Day BlogHer “Reach Out” conference in Atlanta later this year. I’m sorry, Mimi. I just don’t know.
But you know what? My furnace and conference woes are, pardon my language, bullshit compared to the real problems that other people have. From a post on Karen Sugarpants‘ site I learned about Lisa. Lisa survived two bouts of ovarian cancer only to learn that the cancer is back and it has spread to her organs.
How can I bitch and complain about a furnace that I CAN pay for, and about not being able to go to a (language again, sorry) FUCKING conference when there are people who have REAL problems? And not only that, how can I ask people to donate to a conference fund when all Lisa wants to do is take her girls to DisneyWorld BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE.
I need every single one of youto go to a blog called Miss Ann Thrope, RIGHT NOW. Scroll down until you see the Donate button, and click it. Edited to add, use this:
A five day, four night Disney vacation costs $3,000. If 300 people each give $10, that funds the trip. If more give, then Lisa gets some extra cash for souvenirs or whatever. 300 people read this blog EVERY DAY. If you don’t have a PayPal account but want to donate, let me know and I’ll figure out a way for you to send a check or something.
Miss Ann Thrope is also having a raffle with donated prizes. Each $10 you donate gets you one raffle ticket. You can see the list of prizes on her site. Personally, I don’t want anything. Except to help. And for Lisa to have the best vacation possible. I don’t know her, I don’t read her blog, but how can I not help? Please, donate. It would mean a lot to me to know that my readers helped Lisa get to DisneyWorld while she is still healthy enough to go.
This is one of those times when I wish I knew someone who was really rich. I was reading an article on ArticleAlley on George Lindemann Jr; the Lindemanns have made their fortune in everything from contact lenses (George Junior invented the first soft contact lens, the Permalens) to gas pipelines and Spanish-language radio. I’m sure for them, $3000 is what they spend having one suit made. But I have faith that bloggers are going to come together and help Lisa, even if we have to do it one dollar at a time.

I’ve donated and am donating a prize But I agree – I don’t need a prize to inspire me to action.

I just wiped out my Paypal account paying for a few things, but I’ve got a few transactions that should clear today or tomorrow. I’ll definitely donate when those clear. Just keep yelling at me until I do!

Karen-It’s times like this that I remember why I started blogging in the first place-to be a part of a community. I might have my own crap going on, but I have to help when I can. If I hadn’t just written the check for the furnace that wiped out the balance of TWO savings accounts, I would have donated more. I hope someone keeps us posted on how the donations are coming along so we will know when they’ve reached the goal.
Love ya back
I came to your blog first time and i am sort of liking it. I will get some money in my paypal account in mid-april and i will definitely try to donate.
Elizabeth, you are a beautiful person. I’m sorry about the things that happened to your family! Yes, they are small in comparison to what Lisa is going through but stuff is stuff and I’m sad you won’t get to go to BlogHer, but happy you aren’t going because of $$ issues and not health issues.
I will donate, once for each of my six kids. I’m sitting here crying my eyes out. No Mom should have to go through this and no kids. And what a reminder of how fragile life is and that this could be any of us, and happen to any of us.
Please don’t pay me back for my donation to your BlogHer fund. Someday I might need you for some other reason. You know? We are a family here. And if you do feel compelled to pay abck the BlogHer donations, please give mine to the Lisa fund.
Love you!

You can count on me any time I can help for anything I have to give. I’m glad you count me as a member of your blogging family

I have no money. I barely paid my rent but I CAN pray for her (with what little religion I have LOL). I hope everything turns out ok for her. I really do.

I just wanted to comment that people can donate through Paypal, even if they don’t have a Paypal account. All that you need is a valid credit card.
