Turns out, I’m not so great at housekeeping

Author: Elizabeth

My husband has been out of town this week, and I am SO GLAD that he is getting home late tonight. Because the truth is, I am just not cut out for having to take care of the kids AND the house! The fact is, blogging has become my job, and I know my husband still feels like I should be a housewife first and a blogger second, but when there are emails to reply to and giveaways to schedule and reviews to do, it really does take all day. Right now it is 3:53 PM and I have been on this computer since 9:30 this morning, and I have several more hours of work to do at LEAST, and that’s without going through blogrolls to read and comment on other people’s blogs, dropping Entrecards, posting photos to Flickr, etc.

But even if I didn’t have the blogging to do, the thing is, despite having been a housewife for over 9 years, (lean in, this is a secret so I have to whisper) I don’t really like doing housework. I know! Shocking! I have absolutely no problem with two days’ worth of rinsed and stacked dishes being in the sink (we have no dishwasher), or with using every towel in the house before washing more, or not sweeping the kitchen floor every night after dinner like my Mom did. I just don’t get a big thrill out of having a clean house.

And I KNOW it’s not fair to my husband that he comes home from work and does dishes after dinner and then sits and folds baskets of laundry. He says he doesn’t mind pitching in but I can almost hear him thinking “she’s home all day, why isn’t she getting this stuff done?”. When do people who have “real” jobs that they do from home have time for housework?

Here’s some exciting news-I told you about how next weekend, I’m going to Orlando for a Mom Blog Mixer at DisneyWorld. Well, another group of bloggers is getting a trip to California courtesy of Sony! My friend Lisa is going, and she is so excited! I can’t remember where it is being held, I want to say San Diego, because she was telling me something about meetings in San Diego banquet rooms, but that might not be right. Either way, how awesome! I’m so happy for her.

And now, A cute photo of my daughter

I hate housework too. You’re not alone.
Dishes pile up, kitchen floor doesn’t get mopped more than every 4-6 months (it’s an awful linoleum so even green food dye and noodles and children blend in when they’re on it – so you can’t even tell it’s dirty until your feet start sticking), the guest room is a giant mound of laundry-to-do, etc. Ground in Cheerios? Hee, pretty much anywhere in the dining room in the awful shag and so on. So yeah, you’re not alone. I’m hoping it’ll get a little easier when I can make the boys do their own clothes laundry and other housework, but until then… it’s a happy mess.

Lanna-I’d like to think of it as a happy mess, except my husband likes things a lot neater than I do. He’s not a freak about it, but he gets frustrated by my piles o’ crap all over the place. What I NEED is a house cleaning service to come in once a week! Maybe some day…

I am right there with you sista. I do have to admit the thrill of a clean house . . . when someone else is responsible. :)

Honeybell-That’s why I love going on vacation, because I can stay in a room that gets CLEANED every day!

    I hate it too.

I figure as soon as I get a “real job” and by that I mean “paying” we can afford some one to come in once a week or twice monthly.

I’ve just got too much to do and it really is hard to fold laundry when you have a 3 YO trying to either “help” or jump on the bed where all the clean, (previously) folded laundry was.

And kids “helping” clean the bathroom… let’s just say, “gross!” and leave it at that.

You’re definitely not alone!! I get so caught up with what I’m doing online that before I know it, I’ve also been on the computer all day (sometimes still in my pj’s *shock*) and find that I’m running around, quickly tidying up an hour or so before everyone comes home so at least the house looks half decent!

I don’t think anyone enjoys doing housework. There seems to be this general consensus that because us females do housework, we must enjoy it. No. We just don’t want our kids to live in a dump!

LOL, I hate housework too, but if I didn’t do it, then nobody would. And I have to say that only the absolute bare minimum usually gets done – it’s hard enough to keep up with things like laundry and dishes, much less actually cleaning anything else.

I agree – blogging could easily be a full-time job in itself! :)

Hey, its very interesting in keeping our house clean. I really love to clean up all the mess in the kitchen. It has a great fun in itself. Mopping the house floor is like having an exercise done. I get great pleasure in cleaning up the entire house.

I am so there with you! I will do anything to avoid sweeping my floors or doing the dishes. And wouldn’t you know I have a sister who works full time and keeps a spotless house. I just can’t do it. When I’m not blogging, I want to be with the kids or relaxing!

I totally hear you! I am not the greatest housekeeper either and if I realy wanted to I could turn my blog into a full time job as well. What you should do is write down your goals for your blog and set a time limit. Work on each goal one by one if you don’t get all of them done by the time you time limit is done that’s ok. You can finish your “blog goals” the next day. Then you might have some extra time for housework, kids, your husband, etc. I know how hectic it is to have your own business. It’s great that your hubby is willing to help out, but I am sure he would love a break as well. I hope this helps! I know exactly how you feel.

My husband worked from home today and we had this very discussion. He can’t understand why I spend so much time on the computer. When I’m not on the computer, I’m at my sewing machine. The housework takes a backseat, which is fine by me, but he seems to think it should be my first priority.

Needless to say, I spent most of today cleaning or doing yardwork. I didn’t earn a dime or sew a stitch, so now I feel miserable, sitting in my nice clean family room.

Did you just write my last few days or what. Between my forums and blog I swear my kids think the laptop is attached to my lap these days. All in the name to start kicking off the idea of making my online time worth some money!!! Glad to hear I am not alone!!!

Same plight here. My kids are much older… when they were little i thought they’d be able to help. Nope, they make bigger messes! It’s like EVERYTHING has to be cleaned EVERY DAY! lol! It’s not, that’s for sure!

I hate housework. I mean, I don’t mind tidy-ing but cleaning? That’s another animal altogether. No thanks.

As for the blogging, I feel your pain. I was just getting to the point where I had actual traffic and then I accepted the day job and it’s gone downhill since then. I need blogging though. It’s the only outlet I have. I’m really going to try not to neglect it so from here on out.

You know I have been at home for 9 yrs soon to be 10! Before the net I did housework all day long. Then I got the net. Life is not the same anymore! I would much rather be on the net over doing dishes or laundry! I don’t even do work at home stuff. I do fun things on the computer. Things I wish I knew I could have done almost 10 yrs ago!! My house…is clean but to my standards of clean! Meaning I have a load in the washer waiting for the dryer and a load in the dryer waiting to come out. The floors need to be cleaned. Instead here I am leaving this comment for you while I am waiting for my hair to get done since I just changed the color…..LOL

Having only one 3-year old in the office, it makes it difficult for my wife to do the housework AND keep our daughter entertained. Now with the 2nd one on the way, I can only imagine how much more difficult it can get with 2 rugrats!

    Cheers,
    Chris

I am the same way. I actually get more frustrated at a spotless house because then I get mad at my kids for being kids and messing up my freshly vacuumed carpet.
Sometimes, I am jealous of those moms that seem to have it all together. Other times, I just say “screw it”.

I am not a great housekeeper either. My husband actually does most of the cleaning and I let him because first of all he is better at it and second of all, why not. I homeschool my kids, work from home, and do a zillion other things well. If I fall short in the housekeeping department so be it.

You have an awesome blog and are really bright so I wouldn’t sweat it if your house isn’t squeaky clean all the time.

I don’t blame you! Housework is not fun. Everyone in the family should split it up.
