Table for Five’s Airport Adventure

Hey everybody! Have you been wondering why I haven’t already written a post about my trip to Disney, or put up my hundreds of photos yet? It’s because I JUST GOT HOME. My Sunday flight was CANCELLED, because the plane we were supposed to take had mechanical failure, and United Airlines (oh, excuse me, I mean TED, and yes, that’s really what they are calling it now) didn’t have ANY EXTRA PLANES. I had to stand in a line for an hour and a half in order to find out that my flight had already been re-booked by the airline for Monday morning at no extra charge, and the airline reserved and paid for a room in a nearby hotel for the night, plus gave me vouchers good for dinner and breakfast.

Both the hotel shuttle van driver and a woman I talked to in the airport asked me if United gave me another flight for free for the inconvenience. NO they didn’t, I didn’t even think to ask. The dinner voucher was only good for food in the airport and all I wanted to do was go find my suitcase and the hotel shuttle and get the heck out of the airport, since it was already 8:00 pm at that point. I stayed at an AmeriSuites hotel which was okay, woke up at 5:15 AM and took the shuttle back to the airport.

On Sunday night, when I went through security, I had the tiny snow globe I bought Kaitlyn in my carry-on bag. It was wrapped in bubble wrap and white paper, taped, and rolled up in a plastic bag. There was no problem. Monday morning, however, the TSA agent told me I couldn’t take it on the plane. I pointed out how it hadn’t been a problem the night before, and she apologized but both she and her supervisor said no, it wasn’t going into the plane with me. SO…

The TSA agent walked me out of security, and into the Disney Store which thank the GODS is right next to the security line at Orlando Airport. A wonderful Disney Store employee who I SWEAR was named MICKEY took the little snow globe, wrapped it in more bubble wrap and paper, then sent another employee to the recycling room for a box, packed it in the box with more paper, taped it, and covered it in Mickey Mouse stickers. At no charge. Then, the TSA agent walked me over to ticketing so I could check it onto the plane. THEN, she walked me through the employee line at security so I didn’t have to wait. I was very appreciative of this woman’s professionalism, courtesy and kindness.

I walked to my gate, ready to depart Orlando, only to find that my plane was delayed by about a half hour. AND, my connecting flight out of Chicago was also delayed, so at least I would still make that. I left Orlando at about 8:15 am, got to Chicago at about 10:00 am their time, walked to my next gate, only to find that, you guessed it, THAT flight was delayed. Of COURSE it was! Instead of leaving at 11:00 am, we left at 12:30 pm.

I got home, gave the kids their souvenirs, and promptly fell sound asleep until just a few minutes ago. What a surreal 24 hours it has been. I promise I’ll have posts for you all about my amazing trip to Disney, the beautiful, talented and sweet bloggers I hung out with, and of course, tons of photos, but probably not until tomorrow, because after dinner I have to help with homework and go shopping for diaper rash cream-the life of a Mom, right?! So watch for the posts over the next few days, and leave a comment letting me know if there’s anything going on with you on your blog that I should come and read! Because I missed you all, you know ;)

It must be something about the Orlando airport. A few weeks ago, my flight out was delayed too. Fortunately it wasn’t overnight though.

Nice to know you got home safe. I guess, it’s inevitable to experience flight delays and other stuff during travel. Airline company should make sure to avoid having troubles.

  11. Glad you are home safe after all of that. It’s too bad they didn’t give you a flight voucher–what a great way to get to BlogHer–that’s how I’m doing it, anyway. After DH and I got bumped (voluntarily) on a flight home from our recent trip, we got enough in vouchers that I can fly to BlogHer.

All these cancellations are getting to be absurd. And coming from someone who lived in Orlando, I wouldn’t want to be stuck there.

Kim-I didn’t even think to ask, but I think the voucher for the hotel and the meals is what you get when your flight is cancelled, and vouchers for free flights are for volunteering to get bumped. That’s awesome that you have enough for your flight to BlogHer-I’ll see you there!!
