My Son Just Grew Up. In Front Of My Eyes.

Author: Elizabeth

Okay, about five minutes nine years ago, Ryan was a chubby-cheeked toddler, crawling into my lap for cuddles and watching Blue’s Clues. He looked like this:

Fast-forward to a few minutes ago, the Olympics are on, and Women’s Beach Volleyball comes on. A look passes between Chris and Ryan. A few nights ago apparently, the two of them were flipping through the channels and Men’s Beach Volleyball came on, and Ryan said “oh. It’s GUYS”. The subtext there was that he had noticed that there was also Volleyball with women, and he was disappointed to see men playing instead of the athletic ladies with bare midriffs and long legs.

Keep in mind, Ryan is eleven. And a HALF, but still.

So tonight, Women’s Beach Volleyball comes on, and Chris hears the word “Volleyball” from the announcer and says to Ryan “chicks? or dudes?” Ryan says “chicks.” To which I first replied “hey! The word is WOMEN”, I mean geez, teach our eleven year old to refer to women as “chicks”? Way to set an example, dear.

But that’s not the part that made me go WHOA, the part that made me wonder where my baby went. It was the part that came next. So I say to Ryan, “so, you prefer the Volleyball played by the Women’s Team, huh? I didn’t realize you were old enough to even notice women in that way.” And he said, he said…I still can’t believe my eleven year old baby said this, he said…

“AGE MEANS NOTHING WHEN THE MIND IS READY.”

wha wha WHAAA????? His mind is ready? To notice women’s stomachs and legs and (oh god) the rest of their bodies? But I’m not ready! I don’t know how to be the mother of a TWEEN boy. There must be books for it, right? “What to Expect When Your Blue’s Clue’s Watching Baybee Becomes A Tween”?

Send help. And Xanax.

Oh man – I hate to tell you that it only gets worse. As the mom of a 16 year old I’m amazed I’ve made it this far some days. Or should I say I’m amazed I still allow him outside the house? :-)

They always say it’s easier with boys…but I’ve got to imagine it’s still a shock to realize that they’re becoming adults all of a sudden. Yikes.

Good luck with this. I taught pre-teen/teen girls and it was “fun” to say the least as they started to notice boys.

I cringe at the thought of this happening with my boys. I will watch you and learn. Thank goodness I have quite a lot of time before, so you can really teach us ;)

Oh my. Uh oh. I’m not there yet…my daughter is 10 and still thinks boys are yucky. And the boys well the oldest does not notice gender though has more friends that are girls than he does friends that are boys. And boy number two has a girlfriend and he is only 5. I thought it would a phase but it’s been 3 years and they are still “girlfreind/boyfriend” in their minds. Though it’s more BFF’s than anything. And thankfully I still have one that is not even close to that.
I will be watching and learning from you with the boys. As they scare me when I think about them showing a real interest in girls.
