Review: The Nightmare Before Christmas 2-Disc Collection

Author: Elizabeth

the nightmare before christmasTim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas is one of my husband’s favorite movies, so when I saw that it was out in a new 2-Disc Collector’s Edition, I was eager to get my hands on a copy. I didn’t even realize it until I opened up the package, but it’s actually three discs-the movie, the bonus features, and a Digital Copy meant for downloading to your computer and then uploading to your MP3 player! It will be interesting to see if this becomes a standard thing with DVDs.

Even if you own the movie on DVD already, The Nightmare Before Christmas 2-Disc Collector’s Edition plus Digital Copy (whew! that’s a mouthful to say and long as heck to type out) is worth buying just for the disc of bonus features, which include:

  1. “What’s This?”, a tour of Jack’s Haunted Mansion
  2. Frankenweenie, a short film by Tim Burton that casts a dog in the part of Frankenstein
  3. Vincent, another Burton short film about Vincent Price
  4. Behind-the-scenes “Making Of” featurette
  5. The Worlds of The Nightmare Before Christmas-HalloweenTown, ChristmasTown, The Real World
  6. Deleted Scenes

I found some interesting facts about the making of The Nightmare Before Christmas on the Amazon.com page-

THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS is the first full-length stop-motion animated film ever created.
The movie contains more than 227 animated characters.
Santa Claus’ head has more than 50 different working parts, and Jack has more than 400 separate interchangeable heads, each handcrafted with a different facial expression.
The smallest working puppet in the movie is a doll from the “real world” Jack visits that is only one inch long.
Sally is wearing a real miniature dress laid on top of foam latex so that the fabric doesn’t move too much on screen.
At the height of production, the animators produced only 70 seconds of finished film per week.
To create Halloweentown’s twisted look, the design artists often made their sketches using their nondrawing hand.

This movie makes a perfect Halloween or Christmas gift!
