Because I’m pretty sure it’s in the Mommyblogging Handbook somewhere, right after Paragraph A, “Childbirth”, and close to Subsection B, “Poop and Vomit”. Posting about the First Day Of School is one of those rites of passage that we just can’t help but document, even if it was, in the case of my boys, completely uneventful.

Ryan started 6th grade with a teacher who is married to a guy who was my friend in middle school and high school and she’s pregnant with twins. None of his friends are in his class, but two of them are in his “switch” class (two teachers switch classes for science and social studies or, um, something like that), so he sees them at lunch and recess. I’m pretty sure 6th grade is the last year that kids get recess, so I hope he enjoys it while it lasts.

Nathan started 4th grade with the same teacher Ryan had in 4th grade, and with several friends in his class, but not his best friend. OH! OH!!!!! I forgot to tell you!!! I took Nathan to the eye doctor because he kept telling us he thought he needed glasses, and he DOES. Turns out he’s farsighted, which isn’t a surprise since Chris and I both wear glasses. Now I can’t help but wonder if some of the “inattentiveness” diagnosis we’ve been dealing with for two years is actually because he just couldn’t SEE the dang worksheets and books and tests that his teachers were claiming he couldn’t pay attention to. I asked him if the papers looked blurry, but how would he know? That’s what everything looks like to him. We get the glasses today after school and he is SO EXCITED. He picked out HARLEY DAVIDSON frames and he can’t wait to wear them. I’ll post pictures!

So other than that, I’m determined to have the boys take a homemade lunch as often as possible, since last year I was a completely lazy-ass Mom who just waved my hand and said oh, buy the hot lunch today WAY too often. By the time they get through the line and get to the table, they have like 10 minutes to wolf the food down, and that’s not good. Besides, it gives me a chance to do things like buy Laptop Lunchboxes and Horizon Milk boxes (WHY don’t they need to be refrigerated? WHAT is in there??) and well, the truth is, I feel like making lunches is one of my JOBS as their Mom. Lord knows their Dad isn’t going to do it.

Oh, speaking of my husband, he did the most insane thing EVER today. He got up at 4:00 AM, drove to his coworker’s house, parked his car in the driveway, then got into a rented van so that he and two coworkers could, get this, DRIVE TO TORONTO. You know, in CANADA? lol I’ve lived in Michigan my whole life and it still blows my mind that there is another COUNTRY within driving distance from here. So yeah, the three of them are driving to Toronto, spending tonight and tomorrow, and driving back sometime on Friday.

And actually, I apologize to my Canadian readers, it’s not Toronto, it’s Etobicoke. Where Dawn Foods has a manufacturing plant that makes raspberry and spiced apple donut fillings. I bet you wanted to know that, didn’t you? And I bet you are wondering why this started out as a post about the first day of school and ended up with donut filling? Because that is just the joy that is my stream of consciousness, people. You’re welcome. :)
