There was one bright side to having no blog for three days during the hosting switch, and that was that I was able to get other things done that would normally have had to wait while I finished writing, and one thing I did was watch the entire DVD box set of the TV show “Eli Stone“. And I’d also like to point out that the fact that Eli Stone got renewed for a second season proves that I am not always a show-killer. I broke my streak! Usually when I get hooked on a new show, it gets cancelled either mid-season or doesn’t get picked up for a second, but with Eli Stone, I watched it from the first episode and it got renewed. So there you go, my watching a new show is not always a kiss of death
If you didn’t watch Eli Stone last season, you missed out on one of the best shows of the year. The writing, the acting, the dialogue, the plots, the characters, the underlying messages-this show had the best of everything that TV should be. All of that, AND George Michael is a recurring character. And he can ACT! Oh, and great music, too. Musical dance numbers, even. It’s not easy for a show to have the actors break into song (anybody remember “Cop Rock”? No? Yeah, there’s a reason for that), but Eli Stone had song and dance numbers in almost every episode and they always worked.
The new season starts October 14th, so you’ve got plenty of time to pick up the box set and get caught up with the first season. Because of the writer’s strike last October, the show only filmed 13 episodes, so I had no problem getting through the whole thing in a couple of days, watching two or three episodes a day. Hey, I had no blog, I had plenty of free time
Starring Jonny Lee Miller (“Hackers”, “Trainspotting”), who is actually British but does such a convincing American accent that you almost can’t believe it, Natasha Henstridge (“Species”), Victor Garber (“Alias”), Loretta Devine (“Boston Public”), and a whole bunch of equally talented co-stars and guest stars, the show centers around an attorney who begins to have hallucinations that seem to be showing him future events. The source of the hallucinations turns out to have a medical cause, and it changes Eli’s life in ways that affect him and everyone around him.
Oh, and bonus features? This box set has ‘em! Lots of them:
• Turning a Prophet: The Creation of Eli Stone – Witness the birth of Eli Stone as the show’s creators,
cast and crew share the show’s secrets from initial idea to final cut.
• Creating Visions: The Effects of Eli Stone– From fire-breathing dragons to dancing attorneys, Eli’s
soaring hallucinations enliven every episode of the show. Visual FX Supervisor Peter Vasquez
demystifies the wizardry he uses to create the prophetic visions and natural disasters of the first
season.
• Acting On Faith: Eli & George Michael: George Michael’s experience on the set of “Eli Stoneâ€
• Inside the Film: The Natasha Henstridge Tour: The incomparable Natasha Henstridge conducts an
insider’s tour of Eli Stone’s one-of-a-kind, two-story set.
• Extended Pilot Episode
• Bloopers
• Audio Commentary
Trust me when I say, pick up this box set and watch it. You’ll be glad you did.
