Enjoy your books!

With the Presidential election coming up next month, this is a great time to talk to your kids about the election process. And to make it fun too, Scholastic Books has suggestions for books to read with your kids to give them more information about how it all works. I’ve got 3 terrific prize packs to giveaway, each containing these books:

Otto Runs for President
by Rosemary Wells. Description:
It’s election time at Canine Country Day School, and popular kids Tiffany and Charles are already in the running. Unfortunately, they care a bit more about winning than they do about their voters. Before long, little Otto thows his hat in the ring; he doesn’t have a flashy campaign, but he does have a big heart and a great idea — he polls the students and asks them what they want for the school. When the ballots are finally counted, Otto wins by a landslide — but he learns that while it’s hard work running for president, it’s even harder work being president. Ages 4+

LaRue for Mayor by Mark Teague. Description:
Ike finds his civil liberties at risk when Hugo Bugwort, the hard line mayoral candidate, promises to crack down on free-roaming, fun-loving dogs. As the anti-dog rhetoric escalates, Ike is compelled to join the political fray and run for mayor himself. Bugwort rethinks his pooch-policies when Ike selflessly helps rescue him after he collapses at a campaign rally. Told through letters to Mrs. LaRue and local newspaper accounts, Mark Teague delivers another excellent execution of split-screen visuals and uproarious escapades of the unforgettable Ike. Ages 4+

Wackiest White House Pets by Gibbs Davis. Description:
Did you know that John Quincy Adams had a pet alligator living in the East Room of the White House? Or that Thomas Jefferson had two pet grizzly bears who lived in a cage on the South Lawn? Or what about William Howard Taft, who at 350 pounds loved fresh milk so much that he kept a pet dairy cow in the garage with his fancy cars? White House pets come in every size, shape, and species! With comical anecdotes and hilarious illustrations, this is a side-splitting look at American history shown through the most child-appealing White House residents. Ages 8+ Edited to add: Gibbs Davis emailed me and has offered to make this an autographed book! How awesome!

My son is almost 5 and he loves to read and has a million questions. I find him listening to Rush Limbaugh in his room and talking about the candidates. (I also find him listening to the Spanish station and we don’t speak Spanish, so…)

I think these books would really help him to understand.

    Great Giveaway, thanks!

  3. Rachel Inbar says:

My kids are always looking for books in English – right now they’re reading Lois Lowry’s The Giver (together). We’ve got shelves full of books from Scholastic, so these would fit right in…

I would love to win this for my niece and nephew because I think the earlier kids become interested in the world around them the better. I think reading is a great way to do that, and great literature will attract them to the topic. The election is all over the place, and kids want to understand and be a part of it, too. These books will help in that process.

    Thanks so much!!

This really is a historic election. I would love to help my children learn more about politics and especially my preschool age daughter. She already can identify the president . These books would be a fun introduction to politics.

  32. I would love to read these books with my boys. They are both emerging readers and haven’t put a book down since they learned that those funny little squiggles on the paper represent letters, and words.
They’ve also just recently become more aware of the world at large. Suddenly they know about the President and elections and they have tons of questions.
My oldest also has an idea that the person who doesn’t “win” the Presidency should get to be Vice President ( the boy needs to know it isn’t a runner-up position!).

I have also Stumbled this contest (ESJodiG).

    Thank you

    thanks

I would love to win this because my kids can never have enough books. It’s important to love books!

  36. Marci says:

My 6yo daughter mentioned the other day that she was voting for McCain. Why, because she watches the Rifleman which has the character Lucas McCain and she said “he is a good guy so this Mccain should be a good guy too.” LOL!!!

  37. Jennifer says:

I would love to win this because my 8 yr old loves to read. He just told me recently that he likes reading “chapter” books now! I also think you are right about starting them out young learning about elections and voting because it is very important!!
