I don’t know, maybe a UFO is hovering over my house, or a giant magnet is secretly hidden in the clouds above my city, but in the last 3 days, it’s felt like my electronics are conspiring against me. Why? Let’s examine the evidence:
1. Our Xbox 360 developed the “red ring of death”, which refers to a red light appearing around the power button instead of the green light that means it’s working. Fortunately the warranty is still good, so Chris was able to print out a shipping label and send it back. But it still means 2-3 weeks with no Xbox, which to 12 and 10 year old boys is like torture.
2. Both of our cameras’ batteries just stopped taking a charge. At the same time. No matter how long you plug them in for. Which means I can’t take any photos, which wouldn’t be a big deal except I’m so used to photographing every product that comes in for my review, and now I can’t, and it’s frustrating.
3. On Sunday night, I was poking around online, just surfing from site to site, and I guess I clicked the wrong link, because a spyware warning popped up and next thing I knew, windows were popping up one after another. Chris puts more than just the standard virus protection on our machines, so we ran two different types of scans, and discovered it was a Trojan Horse virus. There was nothing I could do. Fortunately, he had brought home a new laptop to get it ready for use at work, and no one is requesting a new laptop right now so he said I could use it. So I guess there’s an upside to that, I get to work on a brand new Dell with Windows 7 installed on it.
But still, it’s not a very positive way to start 2009, having one thing after another stop working. I’m hoping it’s like a friend suggested, like March going in like a lion and out like a lamb, except for the whole YEAR.

In astrology circles, we call it the Mercury Retrograde, which started on January 11. The Mercury Retrograde happens three times a year and lasts for about three weeks. It is said to cause lots of snafus with electronics.
haha, it happens! Every year companies launch products as quick as they can and then they spend the time to test them and improve them.
Well, since things come in 3’s, you’re done for January, right?
Oh yes it happens much haha. =) Cause I noticed that bad things are coming all together at same time … If something bad happens with me I know and waiting for another bad thing i know will happen to me … But ofcaurse there always comes a good time when the good things are comming also, and I also can say ALL together AT THE SAME TIME =)) From my experience
Greetings from Spain!
Christina- January 11th is right about when the trouble started, so I have to admit, it fits! You said it lasts 3 weeks? That’s when the Xbox is due to be fixed, too. Interesting timing
Had the same trouble and dident know what to do with it. They do overheat and I found out not to do the xbox towel trick as it can wreck it, see link.
Red Ring Of Death
Perhaps it was a signal from other planet that they hate the Xbox.
if you have a good virus program, not sure why #3 would be an issue. I’ve run into that situation several times w/ McAfee and it deletes the virus and works just as before. That is the downside of video game systems, you stick different games in and out, sometimes too forcefully or at a bad angle, kids have messy fingers, and all of the sudden it doesn’t work
thanks for sharing that article. its very important have anti virus in your box. when the time expires we try to forget and get all virus of the world. i don’t think if once virus is updated we will face any problem till its expiry date. every electronic needs attention and so too this box.
Yep always happens to me in 3s as well!!!!
Last year, my TV, food processor and microwave all went within a week of each other.
