“Doubt” on DVD

doubtAnd also, “Doubt” is one of those words that the more you look at it, the less it looks like it’s spelled right, you know? Over the weekend I watched the DVD of “Doubt“, sent to me by Click. Based on a play by John Patrick Shanley, who was nominated for the Adapted Screenplay Oscar for the movie, “Doubt” is the story of nuns, a priest, schoolchildren, and a tangled web of religion, authority, and morality.

Meryl Streep (nominated for Actress in a Leading Role) blew me away as Sister Aloysius, school principal who is also in charge of the nuns who serve as the teachers. Amy Adams (nominated for Supporting Actress) is Sister James, a young nun whose student is wrapped up in a scandal involving Father Flynn, played by Philip Seymour Hoffman (nominated for Supporting Actor). Supporting Actress nominee Viola Davis plays the student’s mother in a brief but powerful role.

The DVD has good bonus features, including a short segment that introduces the Sisters of Charity, the order of nuns in the movie. It explains why they wear the clothes they do, and how the order has evolved with the times. It was a fascinating peek into a world that we seldom get to see.

If you’ve been wondering whether you should buy or rent “Doubt”, my recommendation is YES.

I enjoyed the movie the first time I saw it but not the second time. I don’t know why but I just didn’t believe it the second time; the acting was great, I just didn’t like the story. I would however recommend it because the first time I couldn’t stop watching. Regards!

Thanks for the recommendation. I’ve wanted to see Doubt for a while but I just haven’t gotten to it yet. You’ve inspired me to rent it this weekend and watch it with my wife.
