When I was in kindergarten, our house was robbed while we slept. The sliding glass door leading to the backyard had been left unlocked, and not only did the thief steal our TV, he went into my parents’ bedroom and stole my Dad’s wallet off the dresser and some of my Mom’s jewelry. While my parents were laying there sleeping.
I get a chill down my spine just typing those words. The thought of someone being in my house is bad enough, but being in my bedroom? Excuse me while I wig out for a minute.
I was okay when Chris and I lived in apartments, but when we moved to our first house, I became the door-locking fanatic I am today. We have deadbolts on our doors, and I keep them locked even during the day. And you better bet that I am a freak about the sliding glass door to our backyard being locked.
When we moved in to this house with that big sliding glass door that to me practically screams “Hey! here’s a way in!”, I wanted to pay for a home security system. I checked out ADT home security‘s website, I paid attention to the little signs in the front yards of other houses in the neighborhood. But we were on such a tight budget with Kaitlyn on her way that we substituted the deadbolts and my sliding door OCD instead.
Oh, and then we got Elvis, who barks if a freaking leaf blows down the sidewalk three houses away. As much as I complain about his barking, ain’t no one gettin’ in this house while we sleep, that’s for darn sure.
So tell me this in a comment- do you have a home security system? With everyone on a tight budget these days, is it a necessary expense to protect not only your belongings but your peace of mind? Am I the only one who sometimes walks around the house at 3 AM making sure all the doors are locked?

We also have the huge, loud dog security system. My husband double checks everything in a very OCD kind of way each night, so I generally sleep peacefully.
You are not paranoid! When we moved into our last house in IL, it still had the security stickers and signs from the previous owner. I just left them all up but didn’t activate the system with ADT! A great visual deterrent if nothing else. I’ve since done the same thing with the new house we are in!

we had a security system. but when we got new windows installed, my husband didn’t have the company come out and fix the system to reattach to the windows. so now, if i wake up in the middle of the night and hear a phantom noise, i assume someone is breaking in. but…because my dog isn’t barking, i know that to not be the case. but you aren’t the only paranoid one!
No security system here! With all the people in our house we’d have the cops over more because someone forgot to turn it off when they came in! I don’t mind too much. I do double-check doors though LOL
We have a charlie bar on our patio. Even if the door handle there actually did lock. I always leave the front door locked, and 99% of the time leave the garage door down when we’re home (unless we’re in the garage doing stuff). Well, or I’ll leave the patio door unlocked if we’re running in and out of the backyard, but still. Yes. Doors and windows are always locked. I grew up in a college town. I prefer not to experience a break-in, so minimize the possibility when I can.
Oh, and when hubby’s out of town? I hide the mag-lite somewhere in the bedroom at night where I can snag it quickly. The big mag-lite that could knock someone unconscious if used correctly (or just blind ‘em when I turn it on, whatever).
I also refuse to do a home security system. I have kids. Smart kids. Who’d inevitably do something stupid like open a window for a breeze while the system’s on or something. And false alerts? Cost you money – both to the company and police that respond – after a certain number of false alarms.
Yes, we have an ADT security system in our house. In fact, that was the very first thing we had installed when we moved in. On top of the deadbolts and extra locks we have on our doors. I’m probable more paranoid than you because I even had our carbon monoxide detectors monitored, just in case it goes off and we’re sleeping or unconscious already, at least we’ll have somebody to check on us.
Head on to my side of the world coz I just gave you the Queen Of All Things AWE-SUMMM Award.
I’m a pretty paranoid person myself. I check all the doors a few times before i leave the house. But actually if someone really wants to get in, he probably will. Luckily (or not..) he won’t find a lot
