Ben Affleck and Samuel L. Jackson starred in Changing Lanes, which came out on Blu-Ray May 19th. I had seen the movie on standard DVD sometime around 2003, but let’s face it, I can barely remember what I watched last week let alone six years ago, so it was really like seeing the movie for the first time.
Director Roger Mitchell (Notting Hill) crafted an edgy, intense thriller about two men whose lives literally collide. Ben Affleck plays Gavin Banek, a lawyer who is rushing to court to present documents in a case. Samuel L. Jackson is Doyle Gipson, an office worker rushing to court to try to prevent his ex-wife from moving with their kids to another state. When Gavin and Doyle get into a traffic accident, Gavin tries to buy off Doyle with a blank check and ends up dropping an important file for his case.
After they are both late to court, affecting their personal and professional lives, mutual anger at each other leads Gavin and Doyle to play what becomes an increasingly harmful cat-and-mouse game with each other. What makes the plot especially interesting is that there’s no physical violence, yet each manages to inflict grievous harm on the other. You’ll be on the edge of your seat waiting to see how it all plays out.
I liked this movie. I’m used to seeing Affleck and Jackson in action movies, but this was so much more than that. These were men who were trying to save themselves, yet ended up having to consider other people in order to get what they needed. When I get a chance, I plan to watch it again and listen to the director’s commentary so I can learn even more about it. Pick up Changing Lanes on Blu-Ray or DVD, it’s for rent and for sale.
