Although I’m positive I started this blog in August of 2005, it seems that somehow in the transition from the original Table for Five on blogspot (I was so “green” about blogging, I used our last name in the URL) to table4five.blogspot.com to table4five.wordpress.com to table4five.net, I lost a couple of posts. And what’s even stranger is that if you go to the Archives here and click September 2005, it won’t even show you my oldest post, which is this one from Table for Five on WordPress.com. (p.s. “BC” was my blog alias for my husband which I could never remember to use so I told him I was outing him as my husband. I also mention his actual employer at the time, but he left very soon after that anyway).
Today while making my coffee, I was thinking about my old job at the credit union. I had one of those bosses that would ask us, every year during our evaluation, two questions- 1., where did we see ourselves in five years, and 2., where in our day-to-day duties did we see room for improvement?
I always sat there for a moment like the proverbial deer in the headlights, before spewing some kind of professional sounding mumbo jumbo that I thought would be what she would want to hear, something about wanting to work my way up through the department.
As for the “room for improvement” question, I’m sure I gave her some line about always looking for ways to keep the loan document folders up-to-date or something. I wanted HER to tell ME how I could improve. Wasn’t that why they were paying her the big bucks?
So there I was this morning, making my coffee, thinking about my current job as a Work at Home Mom, and wondering why I haven’t sat myself down and asked myself where I see myself in five years and where in my day-to-day job I can find room for improvement? Being my own boss is turning out to be so much harder than I thought it would be. Heck, I don’t even buy myself flowers on Bosses Day
So, thinking about how I can improve, I need to get a better grip on my schedule. I need to actually USE a calendar to keep track of who I’ve said yes to, what they are going to need me to do, and when. I need to have a system that works a heck of a lot better than my current one, which is the “pile things up and try to remember what needs doing at any given moment” system. Yeah. Totally not working.
Five years from now? Wow. In 2014 I’ll be 47 years old. Yes, I said 47. Kaitlyn will 8 and in elementary school full time, Ryan will be a Senior in High School, Nathan will be a Sophomore. Do I think I’ll still be blogging? Honestly, I hope so, because I LOVE IT. I really really do. It feels like the job I was meant to do. Except without being able to “go home” at 6:00 pm and forget the job until the next day. When you blog your life, you work every day.
And so, that brings me to my final point- September 1st is my 4 year blog anniversary. I’ve got some great giveaways lined up, I think it will be a lot of fun. Five years from now? I hope whatever this blog is, or whatever blogging has evolved into, I’ll still love doing it every day like I do now.

I have that same pile it up and hope I remember to take care of it system. It causes enough problems, and I don’t have nearly as many things to keep up with as you do.
Evaluation is a good idea. Those kinds of questions usually have me running off and thinking about something else. Because, you know, not thinking about it really accomplishes a lot.
Four years go by so quickly!
This is a great site that you have here. I have a site myself where anyone can freely express their opinion towards controversial debate topics. I am telling you this, because after looking at your site, I know you could provide us with some valuable insight.
Anyway, keep up the good work and maybe we can do a link exchange.
Sincerely,
Jason
