Supermarket Guru Giveaway – Win a Tote, Book, Coupons!

Last month, I had the terrific opportunity to participate in an online presentation by Phil Lempert who is known as the “Supermarket Guru”. Phil is the food trends editor and correspondent for NBC News’ Today show, where he reports on consumer trends, food safety and money-saving tips, as well as showcases new products. He makes monthly appearances on ABC’s The View , and has appeared numerous times on The Oprah Winfrey Show, 20/20, CNN, CNBC, Discovery Health and MSNBC, as well as on local television morning and news programs throughout the country.

We listened as he talked about how important it is to give kids proper nutrition, how to correctly use coupons and save money on groceries, and information about ConAgra’s brands Healthy Choice and Peter Pan. It was a very informative webinar and I was happy to get the chance to ask a question that he answered right on the webcam as I was watching.  I asked him for school lunch tips, he suggests sending in little bites of things for younger kids, it’s easier for them to eat in the short amount of time they get for lunch if their foods are already cut up for them.

I also received a terrific canvas tote bag and Phil’s book “Healthy, Wealthy and Wise”, along with 5 coupons for free Orville Redenbacher popcorn and 3 coupons for free Hebrew National Brand hot dogs, as a thank-you gift for my time.  I have three totes to give away to Table for Five readers! You’ll love the huge canvas tote and the book has some great money-saving tips. Here’s how to enter:

We also get items for free and make extra money on top of it with rebates.

  84. Erica C. says:

We buy in bulk the items that are on sale, and that we use often.

  85. Deborah R
    Twitter: AsTheNight
    says:

We shop the perimeter of the store first – produce, dairy, meat – to make sure we have all the basic, healthy foods in our cart. As we shop the rest of the store, we ask ourselves (meaning ask me, the meanie) if this item fits with what we have. If it doesn’t, it doesn’t get put in the cart. That eliminates almost 70% of the rest of the store aisles, and we save money!

I stick to a list – which is hard for me because I can be an impulse shopper at the grocery store.

Look at the ads and make a list. Get coupons ready and print any that I need.

East something before I leave and get to the store early to get the in-store markdowns.

I shop at a lower cost store. Purchase staples like Eggs, Rice, Flour, Sugar, Milk, fresh Vegetables. etc. No cost wasting frozen prepared foods. I can make most meals easily and save a lot of the money to use for other expenses. My family doesn’t suffer for this. My son loves helping prepare meals and it’s fun.

Just because the bigger size is on sale doesn’t mean savings. Compare cost per unit which is usually fond on the shelf tag for many items. You’ll find buying in bulk isn’t always best in many ways including cost and convenience of packaging.

    Thanks! :)

  174. Susan D says:

Look for sale items of interest at the supermarket in each week’s sales flier. If the sale item is not available, get a rain check for it, then return to the store (typically within 30 days) and purchase the item without the need to deal with the doorbuster crowd.

Shop for cheapest store. I drive 35 miles to stock-up on groceries at a Wal-Mart in another city, even though there is a Wal-Mart 2 miles from me. The savings easily pay for the gas.

Don’t go to the supermarket while you’re hungry, especially if it’s during the hours when product representatives offer samples. You’ll be tempted to stray from your grocery list and purchase more than you planned to buy if you do.
