1. The President’s State of the Union Address – we let the boys stay up until 10:00, even though the President was still talking we had to get them to bed since they get up at 6:00 am for school (yes, that is crazy early, the bus comes at 6:45). We kept pausing the TV because as he was talking, it was bringing up issues that we wanted to discuss further with the boys. We talked about the difference between the Senate and the House, we talked about the Supreme Court and their overturning of campaign spending limits, we explained the Joint Chiefs of Staff, pointed out our own representatives – both Debbie Stabenow and Carl Levin were front and center! We marveled over the fact that Al Franken, who is the most Junior of the Junior Senators, was sitting right behind the Joint Chiefs of Staff (we thought seating had something to do with seniority).
And we discussed the fact that Joe Biden was wearing a purple striped tie, Nancy Pelosi was wearing a lavender suit, and Michele Obama was wearing a purple dress. Did they call each other beforehand to decide they would all wear purple? Nathan thought maybe it stood for something, I think maybe purple is the “hot” color right now and when all three went out to buy clothes for the event, that’s the color the stores were pushing.
Please feel free to leave a comment about what you thought of the State of the Union Address, all opinions are welcome here.
2. In yesterday’s USA Today, there was an article about the USNS Comfort, the Navy ship that is docked off of Port-Au-Prince. According to www.navy.mil, the Comfort is “three football fields long and one wide – has 250 hospital beds and a 550-person medical team that includes trauma surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, head and neck surgeons, eye surgeons and obstetricians and gynecologists. The team also will include medical professionals from the Navy, Army, Air Force and U.S. Public Health Service, as well as nongovernmental organizations.”
The Comfort is seeing hundreds of patients a day, including people crushed by falling buildings, children who lost their whole family, women in labor, people with diseases like tetanus (which can be cured if treated quickly, otherwise it’s fatal), and they just work and work and work to save as many people as they can. If you are the praying kind, I think the officers on the Comfort deserve a mention for the work they are doing.
3. According to the Wikipedia page for Sarah Palin, she graduated from High School and went to FOUR different colleges. So I think it’s fair to say that she received a decent education, right? So how come when Glenn Beck asked her to name her favorite “Founding Father”, she froze, blinked, and then said “All of ‘em”? I’m not a fan of Glenn Beck or Sarah Palin, but dear gods, woman, if you are going to be interviewed by someone who is organizing conventions, writing a book, and planning a March on Washington to promote something he calls the “Refounding of America”, you’d better brush up on the, you know, FOUNDING OF AMERICA. Doesn’t this woman have anyone who helps her prepare for interviews??
4. Apple, Apple, Apple. The iPad? Seriously??? Was there not a single person at Apple who said “hey, um, this is embarrassing, but have you thought about the word Pad? Sure, it can mean a swinging 70’s bachelor apartment, but it also is the word for, um, a feminine hygiene product”? And did they not think about the fact that there’s only one letter difference between iPod and iPad? Just imagine the conversations-”honey, have you seen my iPad?” “Your iPod? No, haven’t seen it”. “No, not my iPOD, my iPAD!” etc. etc. You know who is happy about this new device? The people who’s jobs it will be to create all the iPad accessories, because it’s too big to tuck into a purse or jacket pocket. There will need to be iPad sleeves, iPad totes, iPad cases. Ka-CHING.
5. American Idol – the Dallas auditions were awesome! First of all, OMGNPH – that’s Neil Patrick Harris if you didn’t watch, he was the guest judge for one day of the auditions, and he was…wait for it…LEGENDARY. The second day of auditions, the guest judge was Joe Jonas of the Jonas Brothers, and he just sat there. When it was time to vote he just said “yeah.” It would have been nice to hear him actually say something about singing to any of the contestants. Unless he doesn’t actually know anything about singing. (sorry JoBro fans).
And THEN…there was Erica Rhodes who was one of the cute kids on BARNEY, and they showed a clip of her on the show, and I looked at Ryan and he looked at me and we REMEMBERED HER! Ryan hates to admit it but he used to like Barney. And this girl was on the show! And now she’s a grad student, and she came into the judges’ room wearing black leather and stiletto boots and CRACKING A FREAKING WHIP. NPH asked her to sing the Barney theme song and she did, then she sang “Free Your Mind” by En Vogue and she was totally good and got a golden ticket to Hollywood!

I love your “What I’m thinking about today” posts. They give me a lot to think about as well. I’m not a fan of Sarah Palin or Glenn Beck either. Granted, one of the reasons is that I don’t agree with their political views, but despite all that, I never ceased to be amazed by the lack of preparedness, or knowledge for that matter, that Sarah Palin exhibits in her interviews. You would think by now that she would get a little help in preparing. She even stumbles on the easy questions, like who are our founding fathers…George Washington would have sufficed. Anyhow, I could go on.
As for the article on the USS Comfort, I heard a story on NPR about it, and I was really amazed by the details they provided on the ship, they said that it will be there for six months, providing medical care. They definitely can use our support, thoughts and prayers for all of the good work they are doing. I can’t imagine some of the stuff that they must be going through.

wowser! You have a lot on your mind. I didn’t even bother with the state of the union address. I am beyond sick of the way the current administration is running things, especially after the way they went on and on about the national debt from Bush, and in the first 100 days they quadrupled it. And it is not getting better. Watching it is like watching a train wreck you can’t do anything about.
I haven’t watch the Idols, either, even though a friend of our children plans to audition in Minneapolis, whenever that is going to happen. I love watching the tryouts, but I just haven’t caught it yet. Bummer.
The iPad thing is crazy, lol. I don’t care about the name, didn’t even go there, haha, but really? What is it with Kindle and stuff? I don’t want to read my books on electronics.
I didn’t see the Palin thing, but I don’t know how you pick a favorite founding father. I mean, really, we don’t know any of them, and what we do hear, is it true anymore? Or has it been washed out like the rest of history? All the Christianity has been taken out of history, when really, those things happened because of Christianity. Why take it out? That doesn’t mean you have to be Christian, but you should appreciate the reason you have freedom, then maybe people wouldn’t be so quick to try to squash it out of life.
And, obviously, I am totally negative right now, lol. I am going through a lot of crapola lately and I just don’t have time or energy to put into those other things.

I was QUITE impressed with President Obama’s SotU address last night. VERY surprised to hear some things, very pleased with pretty much everything he said. I had really started to worry that he was just going to let himself get pushed around by his (very sincere) desire to see the two parties work together but the fact that he called people out and essentially said “Ok, listen up! The people of this country put us here and they’re TIRED of all of the games being played here in effort to be re-elected. Suck it up, do the “right” thing, make this country great again.” BOTH sides are guilty and it does feel like the GOP did listen a bit as they didn’t seem to attack him so much on their reply. They simply, it seems to me, sang only a FEW of the same ol’ songs and then said “we agree with him about X, Y and Z but we just don’t want to see big government and big spending” which essentially is what the Republican party is SUPPOSE to be about.
It did, however, frustrate me that it seems that our elected officials couldn’t keep themselves under control enough to not snidely make comments under their breath and laugh cynically instead of giving him the respect he deserves simply as the President of the United States of America. Grow up people! Act your age, act your stage, act like the REPRESENTATIVES OF OUR COUNTRY that we expect you act like!
One note about seating.. Where people sit is actually up to them. It’s essentially a first come, first serve basis. They were talking about how they turned the heat way down earlier in the day so that the room would be more comfortable when it was full and people who wanted to stake out specific seats were there with coats and blankets and such. Al just got there earlier than most (way to go Al! Work hard for the people!)
Way to go watching it with the boys, too! I think the more our young people are exposed to politics, even the political process (we often watch Cspan here) the more hope our future in this country has. I’m LOVING that President Obama is really working to improve the transparency of it all, too.
RE: Ipad – blah, don’t care about the name. The fact that it’s just a gigantic Ipod that can’t make phone calls is what makes me laugh more than anything.
RE: AI
*pout* NPH was on AI and I missed it! I *heartheartheart* NPH.
I think it’s great that you let the kids stay up to watch the SOTU and more importantly that you used it as a learning experience for them. Sadly, your boys probably now know more about how the government works than much of the adult population.
Good for them though!
Definitely sending P&PT to those on the USNS Comfort – how wonderful that they are able to be there to help.
I really can’t think of anything nice to say about Sarah Palin. And if you can’t say anything nice…
You gotta wonder if Apple was surprised by all the iPad jokes – I agree that it wasn’t the best choice of names.

I’m a fan of Sarah Palin, but she does need someone to prepare her for these things. Her enemies always seize on them.

I fully admit, I did not watch the SoTU last night. I was trying to get my little guy to sleep and then working on a baby blanket for my soon to arrive nephew. No comment on Sarah Palin
The iPad clearly shows us that there are NO men on the upper levels of Apple. Unreal and really lame name for a cool product. Did you see the old skit from Mad TV where they made up a product called the iPad? Very funny and looks like they called it. As someone who never let her kids watch Barney (flashbacks from working in an educational store where we had the DVDs on a lot), I loved Whip Girl!
Also don’t like Sara Palin and the name “iPad”
The people working on the Comfort really deserve a lot of thanks for all their hard work and effort at helping the victims in Port Au Prince.
As for the iPad, it has a lot of nice features! I love that it’s thin and light and the design is great. Buy the name, yeah, I would have to agree! I don’t know if Apple wanted to have something close to iPod, but it just sounds different!

The Apple guys really need a better marketing team…the “iPad” it’s really a disappointing (no camera, no usb ports, no multitasking..it’s just a bigger Kindle).
Just saw a program about the new IPAD, but haven’t fihured out what it is good for.
They talk about it is a 1. generation and it will be better in the years.
But then i think, why buy this*?
Why not wait untill they come with something usefull instead.

Loved it :-p. lol, well I will agree with you, Apple jut made a really :BIG IPHONE:, it looks more like a :kindle: copy
