I can’t sleep. What’s up with that?

For the last two nights, I have had to fight like heck to fall asleep.  Sunday night, I went to bed at like 1:00 a.m. and was awake until almost FOUR. Chris and I take turns each week getting up at 6 am to supervise the boys getting to school, it’s his week this week so at least I didn’t have to get up at 6. But, I do have to get up when Kaitlyn does, which is around 8:30.  I spent yesterday working hard around the house and didn’t take an afternoon nap, so I figured I’d be good and exhausted at bedtime.

Nope.   I got into bed around 11:30 last night, and at 1:30 I was still laying there.  I listened to a 30 minute guided meditation/body scan/relaxation CD, and was awake for the whole thing.  I just could not relax and fall asleep even though I was so tired, I finally fell asleep around 2:00 or so.

I’ve tried taking non-prescription pills like Tylenol PM, and while they do help me fall asleep, I ALWAYS feel really draggy the next day.  I don’t want to take a prescription sleeping pill because I’m afraid I’ll end up driving my car or trying to cook a meal while asleep and hurt myself.

So, what’s the solution?  What’s the cure for my-brain-won’t-stop-this-stupid-THINKING-and-let-me-sleep?  My body might think that 2:00 AM is bedtime, but I need to get to bed earlier so I can get up on time in the morning and be productive. Anybody have a suggestion?

  1. Oh that stinks! I wish I could help, but I have the opposite problem right now – I can’t seem to stay awake for more than a few hours at a time. And yet I still find myself up in the middle of the night too. I can’t concentrate, am totally unmotivated to get anything done and hate feeling this way.

Hmm, maybe try to write down everything that’s on your mind before you go to bed? Then maybe you could stop thinking about it all long enough to fall asleep… I hope you get some good ideas and find something that works!

Maybe we both have a form of Spring Fever?! I haven’t tried writing anything down, that’s a good idea.

When do the girls have Spring Break? Want to try to get our girls together for an afternoon? Call me!

This is strange, but I have had the same problem, 2am is when I finally crash. I refuse to take prescription meds, because they can REALLY mess you up, and I have another problem that I need to take narcotics in order to be able to lay down sometimes.
I stumbled upon the cure to both!
One day I saw some Raspberry Smirnoff Ice at Walmart and bought some. I rarely drink, but I love that stuff. And I was able to sleep earlier and not need the narcotics! So now I drink a flavored beer almost every night and it helps a lot. Sometimes I am still up until midnight, but that is better than 2am.

I agree with Deb. I write things down before I go to bed so I’m not worried and thinking about them. It usually works for me, but not always. Try it!

I used to have a similar problem. I have another solution than just writing things down or listening to music – these methods never help. I have estimated the time I need to sleep – about 8 hours, I usually need to wake up at 9 am in order to have time for everything. So I go to sleep at 1 am every day and my organism get used to it. + Doing sports and spending time outdors helps to get to sleep easier.

Go on the youtube. You have some fine Relaxation songs. They’ll make you sleep like nothing :) Oh and don’t use the pills… whey’re not good :) trust me.

And treat yourself with a massage from time to time. It helps to brake tension in your body.

    Best regards from Slovenia ;)

Hallo! I can advice you to examine the condition of your nervous system, because lack of sleep can be caused by very long nervous strain. I can advice you to visit a psychologist, because I’ve already experienced such a condition.

Are you taking naps during the day? If so, STOP! :)

The thing is, about 5 days ago I stopped taking naps, and that’s when I started having problems sleeping! My body is so used to that afternoon nap. And when I don’t set any kind of alarm and go to bed when I’m actually sleepy, it’s always 2:00 AM to 9:00 AM. Which would be fine if I didn’t have kids that get up in the morning! I really have no idea how to ‘reset’ my sleep clock!
