Et tu, Today Show?

The Today Show did a segment they called “The Dark Side of Mom Blogs” (sigh), with in-studio guests Isabel Kallman of AlphaMom and Susan Getgood, cofounder of Blog With Integrity. The segment started out with this phrase that you all know I HATE:

“So-Called Mom Blogs”

WHY, Today Show? Why do you have to throw that mocking “so-called” phrase in? I can almost see your editor making air quotes with his or her fingers while suggesting that wording.

We do not write “so-called” Mom Blogs. WE WRITE BLOGS, and we can call them whatever the hell we want! Would you introduce an actor as a “so-called” actor, or a new musician as a “so-called” musician? It’s patronizing and I do not like it.

I have no idea why there was nothing else going on in the world more important than the burning topic of NEGATIVE BLOG COMMENTS, but I’m wondering, why stop at Mom Blogs?  Will the Today Show be doing an in-depth report on the topic of the dark side of, say, political blogs? Fashion blogs?  Heck, Perez Hilton must get 50 negative comments every time he posts, why is he not on the Today Show?

THANK YOU, Jen Singer, for mentioning in your segment that the best thing about blogging is that “you can help other Moms”. Let’s have more media attention on that! Let’s talk about bloggers opening their homes, their wallets, their hearts to each other. THANK YOU, Isabel, for mentioning the “tremendous amount of support” that Mom Bloggers give each other. Boo to Ann Curry for letting Isabel finish her sentence and then say “BUT…”    THANK YOU Susan for reminding all commenters to own their words, and reminding all blog to own up to any mistakes.

The Today Show wanted whining and complaining about mean commenters, and instead, they got wonderful words from respected bloggers about the BRIGHT SIDE of Mom Blogging.  Sorry you didn’t get what you were after, Ann Curry. Maybe you should move on to a new topic.

Why, you’re welcome. And thanks for the validation and love.

  2. The story was spurred by the “mean girls” story in the Free Press, so not surprising that the show started there. However, they knew what Isabel and I would say — both of us were already on the record on these issues. I’m pleased with how balanced the story was, when if the show had invited different people than Isabel, Jen and me, it could have been very different.

The Today Show gave us the opportunity to tell a positive story about moms who blog and I was grateful for the opportunity.

I think that concentrating on some positive sides of moms’ life is much more constructive than concentrating on its dark sides. I think it is one more idea for a new blog segment! Positive, positive and nothing more!

I maintain your idea with all my mind:))) Concentraition on negative points can only diminish our resources and nothing more!
