This giveaway is closed. Congratulations to the randomly chosen winner: comment #24 from Hannah B.!
American Girl is giving you a chance to make a big difference in the lives of children through their Shine On Now program, which I first told you about last week. Their goal is to donate $1 million dollars to four childrens’ charities and in order to make that happen, one million virtual stars need to be donated to the program. Here’s how it works:
Go to the Shine On Now website and look for the Donate Your Star! box. Type in the name of your child and a parent email address and click the arrow. This box will pop up:
Click on the star, drag it into the outline, and you’ve donated one star. For every star, your daughter gets one entry in a drawing to win an American Girl Doll, they are giving away one every day until July 31st. You can donate up to 100 stars a day so that’s 100 chances to win!
Not only did American Girl donate 1000 stars in my name to the program (which will become $1000 in donations to charity IF they reach 1 Million stars donated!), they are also giving me the opportunity to give a lucky Table for Five reader their own American Girl Doll!
The winner will be asked to fill out a form with their mailing info as well as their choice of doll from a wide variety of options such as skin tone, hair color and style, and eye color. The winner will be chosen at random using the “And the Winner Is” plugin and contacted by email. I will also edit this post to announce the winner’s name as soon as I’ve verified their main entry and received a reply.
WIN IT: To enter, leave a comment on this post telling me about a special girl in your family or community who you think deserves to win this American Girl Doll, AND write about why she deserves this doll — share with us what kinds of activities she is involved in, how she helps others, etc….. This entry must be completed before any bonus entries will count.
EDITED TO ADD: I apologize for not being more clear about the required entry. What you need to do is leave a comment telling me who you will give the doll to if you win, and whether she does anything to help her community, like collecting canned food for the food bank or giving unwanted toys and clothes to Goodwill. If the girl you are entering for doesn’t do any of those things, that’s okay, you can still enter!
HOW THE WINNER IS CHOSEN: I use a plugin called “And the Winner Is” that searches through the comments and pulls one at random. If it’s a bonus entry, I verify that the commenter also left the required main entry. If they did, I close the comments and notify the winner.
Open to U.S. mailing addresses only, entries must be received by July 31st 2010 at 11:59 pm ET.
Bonus Entries: Once you’ve posted your main entry, earn additional entries for each of the following that you do or have done. These are all worth ONE ENTRY-
- Post the link to this giveaway on any “contest linky” making sure to include the end date of 7/31. Leave the URL of the site where you linked it up.
- Tweet about the giveaway: Enter to win an American Girl Doll from @Table4Five & #shineonnow! Enter by 7/31/10 at 11:59 pm ET.http://wp.me/p9SRW-1FN
- Become a fan of Shine On Now on Facebook and post this message on their wall: I donated a star to Shine On Now and entered the giveaway on Table4Five.net!
For FIVE Bonus Entries: Blog about this giveaway and the Shine On Now program. Please link Shine On Now to http://www.ShineOnNow.com/ , and link Table for Five to http://table4five.net, and include that both the program and the giveaway end on July 31st. Leave the URL to your post in your comment.
Thanks for entering and good luck everybody!
disclosure: as an American Girl Shine On Now Parent Partner, I received a badge to post, information about the program, and will receive an American Girl Doll as a thank-you for helping spread the word about Shine On Now.

Why do I think my daughter would be worthy of an American Girl doll?
She does her best to strive to be the kind of girl American Girl represents.
I don’t know where she came by it, but she is naturally giving. She shares with every child she meets. Is the kind of girl who asks if she can give her pennies for the horse ride away to other kids in the store looking longingly at it. The kind who wants to help people, no matter who they are.
She works with her Daisy troop (next year Brownies!) and goes out of her way to make kids feel included in anything she is doing.
She’s a good kid.
So I’m putting it out there for her.

I would like to nominate my 8 year old daughter. She is a beautiful, amazing girl who will help anyone who is in need of help. My husband and I are both active duty military members and we have to go away for deployments, training, etc quite often. So when other kids’ parents are deployed, etc, she knows what they are feeling, etc and will be there to listen to their worries/concerns or just there to give them a hug. She is also very into recycling and will pick up trash whenever she sees it on the ground. She also does very well in school and will help her little sister out whenever she needs it.
She’s also involved with numerous projects such as Backpacks for Love and Toys for Tots.

The girl in my life whom I wish to nominate is my 7 year old daughter. She is such a sweet girl and is making a difference among her family and friends. She has been very generous with her donations to Haiti and helped make dolls for an orphanage in Africa. She is very quick to share and has found joy in making others happy.

She is also a volunteer at VBS, active in multiply community projects and just overall, a pretty darn good kid.

I would like to nominate my granddaughter Grace. She’s an only child whose parents are medical missionaries, so she is constantly moving to new places, whereever they are called to serve, and she never gets a chance to put down roots and form lifelong friendships. If she had a doll from American Girl, she could have a friend to take with her and be her best friend until and if they ever settle down in one place. She’s a very special and perceptive child and has been learning sign language with her mother, to be able to better communicate with the deaf community. She loves to sing in the choir and help anyone she can.

My 8 yr old daughter volunteers to teach and model social skills to children with autism, because her big brother has autism. She is incredibly patient and understanding, and finds ways to reach the kids through songs, games, and just sitting quietly beside them. She volunteers with autism sibling support groups and shares her feelings about having a brother with autism who cannnot communicate nor care for himself. She is an amazing open, loving and giving child who would probably choose to share or donate this doll if she won! Thank you for an opportunity to honor and recognize her contributions to making the world a better place for children with disabilities.

If I were the lucky winner, I would give an American Girl doll to my 3-year-old granddaughter Kylie. She is an amazing little girl who had a rough start in life — she was raised by her paternal grandmother for her first 2 1/2 years, then came to live with her mom (my daughter) once she had gotten her life together. Kylie has done an amazing job of adjusting and settling right in to life with the maternal side of her family, and she loves her mom very much! She is a kind and very sweet little girl who loves to give lots of hugs and has a laugh that’s infectious!
My daughter Jessica would really love this. She is such a giving person, at school she loves help the younger children with their school work. She takes time with the children in the neighborhood and plays with them even she was older. She wants to be a teacher when she gets older and has always said she wanted to be one since she was six years old. Around the holidays she collects food for the needy and we deliver food baskets to them for holidays. I can’t wait to watch all of her dreams come true someday

This is why I think my daughter deserves to win this beautiful doll.

They are living with my husband and I until they can get settled and find a new home. Katie’s younger brother is only one so isn’t missing his friends back home. Her older brother, who is 7, will be making new friends soon as he starts school. But Katie will be home with Nana. I would give the doll to my daughter Abby. I have 3 girls, so it’s always hard to choose who should receive something like this, but this time it’s easy to decide. Abby is the most generous child I know – she is always giving things, usually to her sisters, lol. But she is the one who makes sure that I’m on top of every donation opportunity and that I don’t forget to participate whenever there’s a food drive or anything like that. She teaches me more about how to be generous than I could ever teach her.

I nominate my 8 year old daughter. She is such a giving and passionate child. Every year she cleans out to donate toys to local kids and we volunteer at a local food bank as often as we can. Last November, we decided to volunteer at a major “Thanksgiving Food Drive”, she was so excited to do this. It did not even matter that we would not be joining our family for thanksgiving. She said “these people need our family more!” This will be annual event for our family. She is very involved at church, loves to help in the nursery and loves the Lord.
She also has a passion for animals and plans to be a veterinarian when she grows up. She is so gentle and sweet with any type of Animal. For her birthday last November, she wanted an American Girl Doll and we did not have the money to buy her one. Instead we went to Target and got her one of their brand of similar dolls. I was so worried that she would be disappointed but she was very appreciative. If anyone said “you have an AG doll” she was not ashamed to say “no its an Our Generation doll”. I love my little girl and I think she is very deserving!

My daughter is about 3 1/2 so most of the good she does for others comes from what we do as her Parents. We donate old or extra toys and clothes to GoodWill, and we donate food to food shelves too. she sees and helps us do these things and it sets good examples for her. Really the way my little girl helps others is by sharing her special kind heart with everyone she meets. She will smile and say hello to perfect strangers at the stores, making people smile and feel good. She will ask them their name and how they are doing…and always says please and thank you. She has a spark that is contagious and other people see her kindness. She is going to do great things!

If I win, I will give the doll to my daughter. She is constantly trying to make others happy and do right by others. she would rather see another child happy with something she wants than have one of her own. Just last week she told me that when she gets older she wants to get a really good paying job and travel around the world and buy clothes and food and clean water for those in need. It brought a tear to my eye. Oh, and she’s only 6…. I also became a fan and added a comment on facebook.

My special girl is my daughter. She deserves the doll because even at her age she has compassion for others and is always willing to help people out. She will often stop and help people without prompting, such as helping someone in the store pick up something they dropped. She helps with many chores, even at a young age. And it is amazing to see her make decisions, not to benefit only herself, but keeping the feelings and wants of others in mind. The cutest thing is how much she takes care of her younger sister. For her birthday, she received two Zhu Zhu Hamsters (different styles) and automatically, without thinking about it, she hands one to her sister and says “this one is for you!” She is constantly sharing with others around her. She has compassion for animals and a desire to help the environment. I am proud of the way she is growing up and look forward to watching her help many others as the years progress!

I’m nominating my niece. She is very involved in her community through the Girl Scouts, her church, and her school. She volunteers at the local library and she can’t wait til she’s old enough to volunteer at the hospital. She donates her gently used toys and clothes to the Salvation Army.
Her father is currently stationed in Iraq and she has coped with missing him remarkably well. She’s sent items to him to give to the Iraqi children (like beanie babies–apparently the kids there love them!) She is kind to everyone she meets and helps her mother with her siblings at home. She helps in her community clean-ups and assists in the toy/clothing/food drives of her Girl Scout troop, school, and Church.

Our grand-daughter was diagnosed with autism shortly after her second birthday. She is now six year old and after three years of in home behavioral therapy, was able to start in a mainstream kindergarten last fall. Her social skills have so improved during this last year. She has made amazing progress with the help of her wonderful therapists, tutors and teachers.
Our girl is in gymnastics, taking swimming lessons (with great success), and has just started playing soccer on a team. She has a tender heart and is always helping out if anyone is in distress. Pats on the back and “It’ll be okay…” Also, she is quite a help around the house. She likes to help set the table and is very good about putting play things away when she is through with them.
When we get together with other families with kids, “C” is always the leader. She currently loves playing “Pre-school” with these kids..and, of course, she is “Miss. C”, the teacher. It is so fun to see her read to them and then turn the book to show them the pictures. Her younger brother especially likes to play this game. Who knew that learning to read would be so much fun.
This will be our families third year to do the Walk Now for Autism here in our city. Our girl invites all her family and friends to join her team and do the walk. Last year, she invited her whole kindergarten class. We make this a family/friends walk and over 75 people were on her team, doing the walk. It is a love fest as we are determined to have each and every one of our children lead full, productive lives. She is proof, WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

Being the mother of two boys, I get my “girl fix” with my brother’s young daughter. She is a hoot. Loves pink and everything girly. Loves to shop. Has my attitude from when I was her age, that, “yes, I am a princess”. And she is the mother to all three boys..her brother and my two. And they love it. You should see her cheer on my son who plays little league. Fun.
Kind heart and loves both sets of grandparents with such devotion.
In school, she tries really hard and does a great job. What more do I need say, just a good, sweet little girl.
My daughter like to collect Box Tops for Education from all our relatives to take to her school. I have explained that it is a way for the school to get new books for the library. She thinks it is quite fun and important for her to contribute.
She is an AG ambassador and has donated her 100 stars every day.
