A Very Motivated Weekend

Last Thursday, I was sitting in my living room surrounded by piles of product review boxes, Sterilite containers full of press releases, and a dining room sideboard I can’t even open because of the stuff piled in front of it.  I looked around, and decided enough was enough. I got Chris on IM and told him that was it, I wanted to buy a desk, and I wanted to get my stuff out of our living and dining room.

I told him I wanted to finally have a real desk after five years of blogging.

He suggested Craigslist, but all I could find was a really banged up, cheap pressboard one.  Instead, I got Kaitlyn ready to go and we headed out for a pair of antique/used furniture stores in downtown Lansing. They are right next to each other so I picked one at random and we headed in.

Antique stores are dangerous for me, because I love stuff like old toys and magazines. The man who owns the store buys up inventory sight unseen at estate sales and storage unit sales, and I could easily have spent a week poking through the boxes and boxes of who knows what crammed into every inch of the two floors of the store.

I told him what I was looking for, a big, sturdy desk with room for a laptop or monitor and keyboard, and some storage drawers. He said “well, I just bought out the inventory from an office that shut down, let me show you a desk”. He took Kaitlyn and I up to the second floor, down a long pathway carved out between the piles and piles of chairs and tables and who knows what else, and in a small room, there it was. My desk.

I’m not sure who a desk like this would have been meant for, either one very busy person or two people who don’t mind sitting very close to each other.  I’m saving the photos for tomorrow’s Tackle it Tuesday post, because I still have some more organizing to do tonight, but it’s like this except not so sharp of an angle, and a very light grey:

And what did I pay for my giant steel double desk with the corner piece?  Fifty Dollars.  I know!   So, stop by tomorrow to see the photos and see my new home office in action!

  1. Elizabeth, would you please send me a swift kick in the rear? I need the motivation to get myself a space. We have a room upstairs that we have not used in 3 years now. Need to clean out the “stuff” that has been stored up there and it has a huge desk and area for the kids to play. Perfect place.

Did I ever tell you about the reporter that came to interview me? She insisted on coming to my house to interview me where I blogged. I laughed and asked if she was going to my bed with me since that is often where I blog ;) I don’t think she thought I was serious.

I wish I knew what came over me last week that made me suddenly do something I’ve needed to do for the last two years! Sounds like you do have the perfect place for a home office, so get going! lol

That’s too funny that you asked the reporter to come get in bed with you! She’ll probably tell everyone that story for years. Congratulations on getting interviewed! I don’t think anyone here in Lansing even knows what a blog is, I wish I could get interviewed :)

I just purchased a desk like that on Craigslist for $20 and am in the process of getting my new home office set up as well. I’m hoping to have it all done by tomorrow too. I also bought an HP TouchSmart computer today so I really can’t wait to get this done!
    Can’t wait to see pics!

Annie, that sounds awesome! And ooh, the TouchSmart computer is so cool. I reviewed one a couple of years ago but I had to give it back :P Good luck getting your new office set up!

That’s why I ended up in a corner of the basement! Kaitlyn has toys down there, a rug on the floor, she can play while I work, but my space stays MINE. I just have to deal with spiders once in a while :P

Great desk, easy on the pocket book and good for the environment as well. I did the same things years ago and bought an old bank desk. I think this thing would withstand a nuclear bomb. It’s hard to move but if there is ever an earthquake I’ve got somewhere to go!

I really can’t work or study unless everything is tidy. So if you are like me, I understand the need to get a desk asap.

I am not jealous of your fantastic desk, I swear. Ok, well maybe just a little then. I’ve got this daft little desk that was here when I moved in and it’s driving me a bit crazy. I used to have a fantastic desk, but it was huge. I gave it away before I moved into my last place.

Wow that’s a very large desk compared to what I have in my office. I would love to get a desk like that… $50 that’s around £31.57 in UK. I wish I could find myself a desk like that – this would be brilliant for my workplace. Any recommendations where I could purchase this desk around the UK anyone for a cheap price but in good condition?

    Much appreciated for this post!
