Tackle it Tuesday – My Bathroom Shelves

In the bathroom that Kaitlyn and I share, I have a deep recess in the wall with shelves that I use to store all my makeup and skincare stuff. I never meant to let it get this bad. The storage cabinets with the multiple drawers seemed like such a good idea at first, I would have one drawer for face makeup, one drawer for eye makeup, one drawer for lip makeup, etc. Everything would stay neatly in it’s drawer and I’d always know where everything was.

Yeah, right. Not only have I failed at keeping the drawers organized, but I have all this big stuff that doesn’t fit in the drawers that ends up piled up in FRONT of the drawers. Which means I can’t OPEN the drawers. I’m going to show you something that causes me all kinds of embarrassment any time someone comes over here and needs to use my bathroom:

And here’s my biggest problem, bigger even than these shelves – I can’t throw things away if they still seem useful. For example, I have lipsticks I bought that seemed great at the store but turned out to be the totally wrong color at home. How can I justify throwing away a lipstick I only used once or twice? It seems so completely environmentally irresponsible. And yet, I don’t think people at Goodwill are looking to buy lipstick that has touched someone else’s mouth. Right?

So let’s assume I’m going to clean out those shelves. What do I do with the stuff that’s still good but that I don’t want? Anyone have any ideas? This is a Tackle that needs all the help it can get!

Thank you for visiting my blog! What a great site you have – following you! And I commend you for showing a messy pic – we need more of that! As for your clutter of make-up…get a shoe box sized container and only put in it what you use each day or once a week. The rest you toss. Yes, toss. I’ve heard that you should not keep make up for longer than 6 months. Don’t know if that’s a marketing ploy by make up companies or not. You cannot take it to a re-sale shop or Goodwill so until they develop a way to recycle make up, it goes in the trash. Think of it as food….you wouldn’t take a bite of an apple and then give it away. So unfortunately, make up is worse because you can’t make mulch out of it! ;)

well, the first and best thing would be to throw away the make-up you bought a very very long time ago, as I bet you have some… the second thing would be to prioritize… take the bottles and make-up items that you bought some time ago,but can still be used for a short time and use them the next period of time, but take them out of the drawer and put them somewhere closer to you,so that next time you’ll use them first. When you. And do not take out more than 2 (3 iif they are small) similar items. The rest of the things, with a longer expiration date, can still be put there in the bathroom drawer. And when you finish these ones, don’t buy some new ones, but use the ones in the bathroom drawer. Imagine you are on a very tight budget and you can’t afford to buy others untill these ones are finished.

Well, in regard to your old lipsticks that you don’t use, you can learn to make your own lip gloss and just use a bit of the lipsticks to tint the lip gloss. That way you can have many shear colors that only have a little bit of tint and you don’t waste your lipsticks either. Plus it’s easy to make lip gloss, there are a ton of recipes online.

Must be in the air – my 7yo and 2yo helped me scrub down our bathroom the other day. :D It’s shiny and clean. For a few days.

Used toiletries – I see them at St. Vinnie’s all the time. Or just collect all the cast-offs in a bag, and post on craigslist (for free or $5 or whatever). Someone will want them.

I am also really bad at throwing things out that are still good. I end up keeping things for years and then going on a big purge. I’m getting my house ready to sell right now and Goodwill has received bags and bags of “stuff,” as has the dump!
