Kaitlyn’s Bento-ish School Lunches

In no way can I call these bentos, but “brown bag” doesn’t really fit either since I’m using reusable containers with as little for Kaitlyn to throw away as possible.  I bought a set of EasyLunchboxes because the site said the lids were easy-open and kid friendly, and they are. I’m actually having fun making her lunches in the morning, and she has fun helping me choose what to put in them!

This was her very first school lunch! Turkey and cheese, grapes and blueberries, cherry tomatoes and a dill pickle cut in half.  Plus an 8 ounce bottle of milk (Country Fresh brand, sold at Walmart) and a package of mini muffins that was supposed to be for snack time in the afternoon, but she ate the entire thing at lunch. There was not a single crumb left!

Second lunch, packed by Chris – Turkey and cheese again, a granola bar, a small baggie of Barbara’s Snackimals, baby carrots and dip (found at Walmart), apples, and milk.

Third lunch, packed in a BrightBin container. BrightBins have a top section for a sandwich, then a bottom section with three compartments.  I packed a PB&J in the top

Kaitlyn decided she doesn’t like using these, because she has to open the top, take a bite of sandwich, close the top, take a bite of fruit, etc. She wants to stick to the EasyLunchboxes.

Let’s talk school lunches in the comments – what do you pack in your kid(s) lunch?

Those lunches look amazing – will you pack mine too?! My little guy has a lot of restrictions on what is allowed. The nursery school is kosher and nut free. Talk about being “fun” when your kid is picky to begin with. My oldest like yogurt, fruit, cheese, and things like that. My little guy enjoys mac and cheese, yogurt, and an occasional fruit will pass by his lips.

It would be fun if she also used chopsticks to dig in :D But seriously, those are really healthy food you have for her. Are those grapes? They looked like freshly picked.

I too have been doing “Bento-ish” lunches for my son. I use a container I bought in a pack from Target with a big single compartment and a lid that has flaps that snap down on both sides. Then I bought some small things to put inside (muffin cups, small containers with lids).

Today he got a slice of pizza, one of those drinkable yogurts, an applesauce, some cheddar crackers (his request) and a small amount of M&Ms & Jelly Bellys. Oh and a grape juice box. It all fit in the container with an ice pack.

    We call them “fun lunches”

There’s nothing more gratifying than seeing that lunch box come back home empty. I like the third one you laid out, the BrightBin, good use of space – and they only need to access the sandwich portion at lunch time. I wish our school system would allow pb&j, but the PB is strictly out of the question. Today, I packed last nights pasta in her princess half thermos with pickles, peaches and granola bar for snack. We will see how much is left!

Right now I’m choosy over the lunchboxes :) The lunchbox looks spacious enough and packing lunch with some varieties will be fun for the kids too. Instead of throwaway lunchboxes I prefer a bring back home method:) after all reducing thrash means being eco friendly as well.
