Not a Mommy Blogger – Guest Post

I’m a new mom. I’m also a blogger.

But I’m not a “mommy blogger. ” I don’t dislike mommy blogs – they tell some of the funniest and
most human stories out there. I just didn’t feel I had anything to say that wasn’t already said. I also
wanted to maintain my other interests; writing about health, history and science helps me do that.

Blogging with a four-month-old is challenging, but makes for great fodder. Even though I don’t often
write about her, my daughter inspires posts on a regular basis.

Managing these roles is an adventure, and I wish those in the same boat inspiration, success and eight
hours of unbroken sleep.

This guest post is written by Katherine E. Reilly Mitchell, an outreach assistant for a single parents blog that provides resources, advice, and grants for single mothers.

Stop This Craziness, I Want To Get Off

blog what you live, don't live to blog

Blogging was simple when I started in 2005.  I wrote posts, replied to comments, commented on other blogs, kept up with my blogroll on Bloglines, and that was it. And then blogging exploded and social media was born, and for me, blogging got a whole lot more complicated. I’d like to think it’s possible for me to decide that I can make blogging easy again.

I put pressure on myself to try and keep up with everything that everyone else is doing.  As my traffic dropped, I frantically tried to figure out why, was it something I was doing or not doing, what were other blogs doing, maybe I should do that too – I’ve been driving myself crazy.

And then I went to the Brands & Bloggers Summit last weekend, and listened to Andrea Metcalf, a nationally known fitness expert and motivational speaker, speak on the topic “Amplify Your Brand”.   What I wrote down in my notes is this:

What is your MISSION?   Inspiring others? Encouraging others to dream? Transforming lives? You need to know what you want to accomplish with your writing.

I hadn’t thought about that, beyond a general “my mission is to, you know, write stuff, and it would be great if other people read it.”  My original plan for this blog was for it to be an online journal of sorts, where I could save memories of my kids as they grew up, and where I could share my thoughts on current events, books I was reading, music I was listening to, movies I’d watched, TV shows I was addicted to, whatever came to mind.

And then I started blogging for the purpose of earning money, and the train went way off the rails.  I lost track of that original plan in my rush to start contributing financially to my family.  I started saying yes to everything, and now I have made a big mess of my life.  Every day I stare at piles of products I said I’d love to review, hundreds of new emails that I can never keep up with, and a list of things I “should” do, like update twitter X number of times, make sure my posts go to Facebook, add my Wordless Wednesday link to as many linkies as I can find, all in the hopes that one or two people will come here and leave a comment.

It’s exhausting.

I’m never going to have the readers I had when I started. The people who read my blog in 2006 and 2007 have told me flat-out that they stopped reading when I started writing paid posts. They still like ME, they just stopped liking this blog. It hurts, but I can’t blame them.

I have got to stop making blogging into something difficult. I’ve got to stop worrying about keywords and title tags and SEO and linkies, and just write from my heart.  I’ve got to pull in my focus and stop letting what everyone else is doing affect what I’m doing.

In other words, I need to blog like NO ONE IS READING. Because if the original purpose of this blog was to journal my life, it should be just for me anyways. Believe me, I wish I could go back to 2008 and make a different choice. But I can’t, so what I can do is learn from my mistakes, and vow to do better starting now.

Keeping Your Kids Active in the Arts

Budget-cutting school systems always seem to first single out fine arts for elimination. While some may think of the arts as free-time activities that aren’t of real benefit to children’s “real world” lives, the fact of the matter is the arts are of enormous value to society and social development. Recent studies show that students who are active in the arts have higher SAT scores. They also score better on other forms of standardized testing. They achieve higher grades throughout school. They are more likely to attend and finish college.

Music

From neighborhood music teachers to drum lessons in San Diego, to the numerous community arts efforts throughout the country, these lessons and programs offer vital developmental assistance to children’s social, behavioral, mental, physical, and emotional development. Participation in the arts encourages and enhances cognitive abilities, linguistic development, social skills maturation, and physical and emotional health. It stimulates and improves the function of various parts of the brain. It builds confidence and feelings of self-worth.

Involvement in music, for instance, improves spatial intelligence. This is the capacity to accurately perceive and cognize the world. Music benefits the aesthetic senses while also advancing mathematic and critical thinking abilities. Children involved in music score better in high math. They also show an improved interest in advanced subjects.

Music participation doesn’t require a child becoming an orchestra virtuoso. Local music teachers offer many of these benefits to a child. Parks and recreation, social, and church programs often give musical education opportunities. There are often beginner community orchestras.

Theater

The theater is a vital source of social interaction for children. It builds confidence and creative thinking. Children involved in neighborhood theaters or similar programs interact in more confident, assertive, and mature ways with peers. Theater-involved children read more and at a higher level.

Again, theater participation doesn’t require being a professional child actor. There are many local theater groups that specialize in children’s theater. Parks and recreation departments often have little theater workshops for children. Many civic organizations offer opportunities for children to take part in theatrical productions. Such events or programs are routinely announced in the local newspaper or on the Internet.

Visual arts

Piccaso held that children are natural artists. Developing that tendency into wider visual artistic expression often requires nothing more than some art supplies. Artistic children show advanced development in motor skills, spatial judgment, and other neurological facets to interaction.

There are all kinds of parks and recreation arts and crafts lessons available in most communities. Starting an arts and crafts program is as simple as networking with other parents. There are local businesses that specialize in arts and crafts.

Participation in all forms of the arts opens up a wider and richer world for all children. It encourages development of compassion and a greater understanding of the world. It helps children learn and respect themselves as well as other people. While axing arts education, humanity stands to lose far more than the small monetary gain made by eliminating them.

High Blood Pressure Medication Day 1 – I Feel Weird

I woke up this morning feeling all productive. I have great photos from my trip to Brands & Bloggers Summit over the weekend, plus notes from the panels I want to share with you, plus a suitcase to unpack, laundry to do, etc.  All I had to do first is take this tiny 25mg. pill.  My doctor warned me that I might feel dizzy because my blood pressure is dropping. Okay. fine.

I feel WEIRD. It’s not dizzy like the room is spinning, it’s more like I feel weak, like I’m sick.  The pill dried my mouth out so I’m sipping, sipping, sipping water – which means a trip to the bathroom every hour. And, I’m exhausted.  I slept really well last night, but at about noon, which was around five hours after the pill, I started yawning.  I went in my room and lay down, and passed out cold for three hours.

I’ve only been up for a little over an hour and I”m already yawning again. And I still feel buzzy.  I don’t think there’s anything I can do besides keep drinking the water, have some orange juice, eat a banana.  I really would have loved to take advantage of the fact that I have the car today and go somewhere with the kids, but I just couldn’t do it.

Anyone who has experience taking Hydrochlorot, do you remember how long the side effects lasted?  Or am I going to have to change the name of this blog from Table for Five to Lizzy is Dizzy?

Rugs to Brighten Up Your Floor

One of the biggest decisions you could possibly make about your home’s décor is to choose a rug that’s the right color. By looking to someone like modernrugs.co.uk, you’ll find that they come in many different colors, but knowing which one is right for your home is tough.

Following trends can be difficult, but choosing something that’s only briefly trendy isn’t right. At the moment, cool gold and green, silvers, mauves and greys are out of fashion, while earthy shades like light blue, khaki, suede and warm green are currently in. While beige is seen as dull, it’s a color which works because of its utilitarian qualities.

There are a number of things to consider when choosing a rug color. The massive choice confronting consumers is enough to make your head spin, but you’ll want to choose one that fits in with your home. Here are some useful tips:

• If the rug is going to be walked on regularly, spills, dirt and stains could happen regularly. While lighter carpets can be treated to resist stains, darker rugs tend to cope better.
• Rugs can be used to either lighten up or tone down a room. For darker rooms, red is ideal, while lighter colors such as sky blue could be just the thing for lighter rooms.
• If the rug’s color matches your personality, that could be useful. If you’re a casual, relaxed sort of person, then warm colors might work, while those who like detail will go for blue, black, gray and white tones.
• You could have a rug which fits in with your existing décor or have it as a room’s focal point. You won’t want it to clash with all the other furniture, as it could ruin your whole interior.
• If you’re confused, then choose beige. It’s safe, goes with just about every design and the best beige rugs are durable and can cope with just about any daily wear.
Whether or not you have a color in mind, by going to Modern Rugs, you could find the inspiration you’re looking for, with rugs of all shades in stock.

I’ve Been Diagnosed With High Blood Pressure And My Life Needs To Change

I saw my doctor yesterday and was diagnosed with high blood pressure (also known as hypertension) and given a stern and somewhat scary lecture. If I was waiting for the “a-ha” moment before making a commitment to a healthier lifestyle, yesterday was it.

My blood pressure yesterday was 145/90, and it had been that high six months ago too, and at the visit before that. So, I have to start taking blood pressure medication every morning, with the hope that it will lower my blood pressure back to safe levels. Instead of the “four to eight times more likely to have  a heart attack or stroke” level that I’m at right now.

You’d better believe that the words “four to eight times more likely to have a heart attack or stroke” put fear in my heart.

She gave me a stapled-together printout of how to follow the DASH diet – Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension – which includes drastically reducing sodium, eating more fruits, veggies and whole foods in general, and adding more foods high in potassium. Turns out that a potassium deficiency can lead to hypertension, as well as – wait a minute, this sounds familiar – depression and fatigue.

It’s possible that these last few years when my depression has become harder to manage and I’ve been feeling tired pretty much all the time could be because I rarely eat enough of the food that has potassium.

This is the wake-up call I needed, people. Quitting smoking, exercising 30-60 minutes a day, eating healthy, whole food, reducing stress (which also aggravates blood pressure), these aren’t just suggestions anymore. These are my guideposts to staying alive.

Please share your experiences with the DASH diet, taking blood pressure meds, or anything high blood pressure related in a comment. I know I’m not alone in this, and I’d like to feel less alone :)

5 Ways To Protect Your Home And Family

There are over a million break-ins in the United States every single year – according to an FBI statistic. They say that most thieves target jewelry, electronics, and other valuables from a person’s home, and the average loss is a few thousand dollars for every break-in.

There are many reasons to protect your home and family. For most families, it is not just about the money. Thieves can sometimes take items that have sentimental value and cannot be replaced. They can also steal things that will lead to identity theft which can cause numerous problems.

There are many things that families can do to protect their homes and families. Below are 5 ways to secure your home, family and belongings from burglaries:

Home Security System

Every home needs a Security System

This is one of the most popular ways to protect both your home and family. Most criminals will turn their bad deeds elsewhere when faced with a home that has a security system like the ones from WirelessAlarmSystems.com. If you are serious about the protection of your home and your family, installing a home security system should be your first move.

Secure Your Window

Unsecured windows are like invitations for criminals. A broken or cracked window can be very easy to get through. These are what criminals look for when deciding whether or not to break into a home. Keep all windows in good condition, even if they are on a second or third story. Also, be sure to keep valuables out of sight.

Add Light Sources

Burglars do not like a lot of light. By keeping your entryways lit up, especially when you are not home, you can provide a lot of extra security for your home. If you opt for exterior lighting, opt for heat-sensing lights over motion detecting lights. They sense body heat over the motion of something simple like an animal or a tree branch moving.

Maintain Yard

Overgrown shrubs and trees can make handy hiding places for burglars to hide in and use to climb into windows. Try to use your landscaping to your advantage. Plant things like thorny bushes near windows which can deter thieves. Also, keep tools that can make a break-in easier for a thieve out of reach and locked up.

Protect Your Valuables

Professional criminals will know all of your popular hiding places. Try to hide your valuables in uncommon or typical places. Also, if you purchase something of value, do not leave the box out on the curb for trash pickup. This can be an obvious sign of what valuables you have inside for the taking.

As you can see, there are many ways to protect your home and family. It can be as easy as putting yourself in a burglar’s shoes. Walk around your property with a friend or relative to look for areas that could be inviting or easy to break into. Nothing is more important that the safety of your home and your family.

Wordless Wednesday 7-11-12: Silly Kaitlyn

Kaitlyn sitting on top of the stuffed animals she stores in this bucket. It’s her favorite place to watch TV.

This was the “toy” in Kaitlyn’s kids’ meal from Wendy’s last night. It’s a plastic version of a game from the TV show “Minute to Win It”, which has just come out on Xbox360. She insisted on putting it together and loading up the paper keys on the hook. Seriously. Such a Goofball.

Smart Appliances Taking You One Step Forward

Just about every household owns a selection of appliances designed to perform one or several functions to help make life much less of a hassle. Without appliances such as a Fridge Freezer found at appliancesdirect.co.uk, you might find that keeping food and drink cool and fresh is almost impossible, and it might also limit what foods you can eat. Such is the ubiquity of appliances that life is unimaginable without them, but some of the newest appliances on the market can perform all sorts of amazing functions which could render basic appliances as we knew them obsolete.

kitchen photo momreviews

In the past, if you wanted to buy a new fridge freezer, dishwasher, washing machine or tumble dryer, you had to go to your nearest electrical store and choose from a limited range of appliances. Before the advent of online shopping, this was the only option, which meant that, although consumers sometimes returned from their shopping trip with a new appliance, it might not necessarily have been the one they wanted. However, with a greater range of products to choose from and a number of different ways to buy them, it’s easier than ever to buy the appliance of your dreams.

Smart appliances are proving to be very popular at the moment, and with good reason. As well as doing the basic jobs to perfection, they also come with a number of additional features, plus they use far less energy than older, more basic models. By switching from your older appliances to new, smart appliances, you’ll almost instantly notice a huge difference between the two. As well as performing much better, their design and build quality means that your kitchen will look almost brand new.

If you’re looking at buying smart discount kitchen appliances, you might want to buy some from the biggest brands, as they’re usually the ones which work better than others. However, you might also want value for money, but as they can make your life easier and help to reduce the amount you spend on your utility bills on a monthly basis, whatever smart appliance you buy, you’re bound to save money over time.

Thanks goes to my friend Claire for getting me this guest post!

5 Easy Snack Recipes even Kids Can Make

Keeping kids full after school and during the summer months between meals is a full time job for harried parents and care providers. It seems like someone is constantly in the kitchen preparing food or cleaning up the mess left behind after feeding the kids. These kid friendly recipes can help ease the work load by allowing kids to prepare their own snacks with (hopefully) minimal mess left behind.

Flavored Microwave Popcorn
Kids can make their own flavored popcorn as easy as one-two-three. One: Pop a bag of microwave popcorn. Two: Allow the bag of freshly popped corn to cool for a few minutes, open the bag and sprinkle on a topping like cinnamon, Parmesan cheese or paprika. And three: Close the bag and shake to distribute the dry flavoring throughout the popcorn. Any favorite flavoring (soy sauce, melted chocolate, red pepper flakes, etc.) can be added to create a unique and easy snack for kids.

Frozen Waffle Treats
Got a bag of frozen waffles and a jar of peanut butter? Then your kids have the beginnings of a quick and easy snack. Allow a frozen waffle to defrost (or pop into microwave or toaster), spread a thin layer of peanut butter on it and let kids top with whatever is on hand. Apple slices, raisins, chocolate chips, potato chips or a banana, then roll the waffle or top with a second waffle and enjoy. Waffles also make a great crust or cone for ice cream. Just spread softened ice cream on a waffle and roll for a cone or top with a second waffles for an ice cream sandwich. Drizzle with chocolate sauce for another layer of yummy flavor.

Soft Tortilla Snacks
A bag of soft tortilla shells and a few other ingredients are the beginnings of a kid friendly snack recipe. Spread peanut butter on a soft tortilla, then top with a thin layer Marshmallow cream. Sprinkle some chopped nuts, raisins and or mini chocolate chips and roll the tortilla up tightly. Cut cross-wise into one inch sections to create fun and delicious peanut butter pinwheels. Any filling can be used, just start with a thin layer of peanut butter to hold it all together. Plus the peanut butter gives the kids a healthy boost of protein, but they don’t have to know that.

Bagged Snack Mix
Here’s a make-ahead kid’s snack that is great for back packs and sports bags. Purchase several of your kids favorite snacks that come in mini or bite sizes, like mini marshmallows, teddy grahams, nuts and dried fruits (save money by buying in bulk and/or on sale) and purchase a box a Ziploc snack size bags and let kids create their own bagged snack mix. Seal, store in a cool dry place and the snacks are ready to grab and go anytime.

Pound Cake Pets
Kids can make their own pet shaped snacks with a store bought pound cake and a cookie cutter. Slice pound cake into one inch slices and let kids press a pet shaped cookie cutter into the cake slice to create their own pound cake pet. Top with fresh fruit, cool whip, pudding or ice cream if desired (have the kids make an extra one for you) and enjoy.

Think ahead and keep a few basic ingredients on hand, so kids can create and make their own easy snack recipes whenever it’s convenient!
