How to Help Your Little Ones Dress Themselves and Learn to be More Independent

This is a guest article from Vertbaudet, a European website and catalog specializing in clothing and furnishings for children ages newborn to fourteen.

Children are keen to show their independence from a very young age, and even small toddlers will try to do things like take off their baby clothes by themselves without any help. This is a natural and important part of growing up, and they need a lot of support as they learn to do things on their own. Dressing is a particular area that many little ones try to master early on, by trying to put on and take off boys clothes or girls dresses all by themselves.

Although early attempts often go wrong, children aged as young as two can in fact begin to learn how to dress themselves. This is actually an important milestone in the child’s development, as independent dressing should be established by the time they start attending school, when they will need to be able to change their own clothes for games and swimming lessons.

When choosing children’s clothes, look out for special design features in boys clothes and girls dresses that will encourage children to learn to dress themselves. Examples might include T-shirts, tops and dresses that are reversible, making it impossible for children to put them on back-to-front. Look for elasticated waistbands to make trousers easy to pull on and take off, as well as tops, dresses and trousers that are specially designed for small hands to slip on easily. Consider also how and where the clothes need to be fastened, velcro on girls shoes for example is easier than laces, zippers with tabs that are easy for a child to grip and pull without any help are also good, as are press-studs that are easy to fasten and buttons and buttonholes that are colour coordinated will all help to encourage independent dressing.

Women’s Summer Dresses on Sale for Canadian Shoppers

I’m going to three blog conferences this summer, which means I’m going to need to buy at least one nice dress. Before heading out to retail stores, I like checking the store websites to see what’s in stock and what I should expect to pay.  I’m sure my fellow Canadian bloggers do the same, and they can find really great deals on womens dresses, shoes, handbags, sleepwear, maternity clothes, and more on Wishabi.

I like dresses to be casual, like this super cute L.L. Bean Chambray Camp Shirt Dress.  Doesn’t it look comfy? You can’t tell from this photo but the model is wearing heeled booties. I would choose little white sneakers or sandals. It just looks so easy to wear. Besides blue, it also comes in white:

I also like this wrap dress from The North Face – I didn’t even know they made dresses! There’s a review under the picture from a lady who packed it for a backpacking trip and said it was super easy to wash, hang up to dry, and wear again the next day. Sounds perfect! Besides this blue, it also comes in black, and a color the site calls Khaki (it looks almost olive green to me) with a blue and white geometric floral pattern:

We’re on a tight budget as always, so I’ll be concentrating my shopping on womens summer dresses on sale.  Since my first blog event is the weekend after next (yikes!), I’m going shopping this weekend. I’m thinking about starting at Fashion Bug, but I’ll also be heading to Walmart since they carry an excellent selection of plus size clothes.  Have you bought any cute dresses for summer? Any tips on where a short, chubby lady can buy a comfortable summer dress?  If so, tell me about them in the comments! I need all the fashion help I can get :P

Sponsored Review for MyLocker, Custom School Apparel Site

MyLocker.net is a website where you buy custom sports apparel. I assumed that meant designing my own logo and then choosing to have it printed on a tee shirt or sweatshirt, like on CafePress. But oh no, that’s not the case here at all. I don’t know how they did it, but somehow MyLocker.net ALREADY KNOWS the name of your school’s team and your school colors and can print it on sportswear for men, ladies, and kids, as well as on school football apparel, blankets, backpacks, hats, and more. They have over 110,000 individual online shops, people! Read the About My Locker page, which is really well written because it reads like someone is actually talking to you, to learn about how it started with printing custom blankets for a friend and, after a whole lot of hard work, became this awesome site.

I couldn’t believe my eyes when I put in my zip code and the dropdown menu showed me the name of every school in my district. I can’t even imagine the work that MyLocker put in to creating a search engine that would do that, but then to also figure out not just the name but the school COLORS? I’m still just flabbergasted by it! Anyway, I picked our high school, and my page became my own personal School Apparel Shop-

I started looking through the sweatshirts and tee shirts, printed with sayings like “Waverly Diving” and “Warriors Soccer” and then I realized something that makes the site even MORE cool – I can edit the text on any of the items so it says exactly what I want it to say. So, I made this:

Seriously, how awesome is that?? And you know what that sweatshirt would cost me? THIRTY FIVE BUCKS plus shipping. I am so totally buying one!  Trust me and go to MyLocker.net and check it out for yourself, and not just because I got paid to review the site. Do it because it’s an awesome site unlike any I have seen in my six years online, and that’s saying a lot.
