We recently reviewed a movie called “Elephant Tales“. It stars two elephants. That’s right, the elephants are the actual stars of this sweet movie. Teenage Zef and little brother, Tutu, are two happy elephants with the biggest backyard in the world to play in — the wild plains of Africa! Zef is just the big brother to show Tutu how to have fun and get into all kinds of mischief… until one dreadful night when their mother and the family herd are taken from them by “The Badness”.
As the protective older brother, Zef leads Tutu to believe that a rainbow took their mom to the sky; now Tutu is determined to find the rainbow and their mother. Along the way, the brothers befriend other orphans – Chump, a chimp insisting he is the king of the jungle, Stretch, a very skittish giraffe and Cub, a prince to the true jungle king. Collectively, the five band together facing grown-up challenges, meeting new friends and discovering as a team, anything is possible.
This is an interestingly international production-the director is Australian, the movie was filmed in the wilds of Africa, and was first released in France. What I found most interesting is that the animals were filmed in their natural habitats, and then voices were added. These are not trained animals performing stunts. Okay, a monkey opens a cage, but for the most part, you just see the animals themselves. It’s not a fast-paced movie, older children might lose interest after the first half hour or so, but it’s also a great way to open a dialogue with your kids about what kinds of habitats animals live in. It’s rated G, so it can be viewed by the whole family.
