Nearly Wordless Wednesday – Why Being A Mom of 3 Is My Special Occasion

At BlogHer, Hallmark had a booth in the Expo Hall with these shirts to customize and then they took your picture for a virtual mosaic. I stood there for a minute, thinking about what exactly in my life is a special occasion, and the answer came pretty quickly. Chris and I were sure we didn't want kids, maybe because we were still kids ourselves when we first started dating. Neither of us had any experience at all with babies, and when we tried to imagine ourselves as parents, we just couldn't, so we agreed that kids were not in our future. And then I had an unplanned pregnancy that ended in a blighted ovum, and I realized with much shock that I had actually been excited about having a baby, and it turned out Chris knew just how I felt, and a year later, Ryan was born. From not wanting kids at all to having THREE of them, and doing a pretty okay job of raising them, makes the fact that I'm a Mom of 3 a special occasion every day! My Son Just Grew Up. In Front Of My Eyes.

Okay, about five minutes nine years ago, Ryan was a chubby-cheeked toddler, crawling into my lap for cuddles and watching Blue's Clues. He looked like this: Fast-forward to a few minutes ago, the Olympics are on, and Women's Beach Volleyball comes on. A look passes between Chris and Ryan. A few nights ago apparently, the two of them were flipping through the channels and Men's Beach Volleyball came on, and Ryan said "oh. It's GUYS". The subtext there was that he had noticed that there was also Volleyball with women, and he was disappointed to see men playing instead of the athletic ladies with bare midriffs and long legs. Keep in mind, Ryan is eleven. And a HALF, but still. So tonight, Women's Beach Volleyball comes on, and Chris hears the word "Volleyball" from the announcer and says to Ryan "chicks? or dudes?" Ryan says "chicks." To which I first replied "hey! The word is WOMEN", I mean geez, teach our eleven year old to refer to women as "chicks"? Way to set an … [Read more...]
