Giveaway – Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules

This giveaway is closed. Congratulations to the winner, #127 Tia!

Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules opened in theaters last weekend. Despite it’s lack of magic, superheroes, or vampires, reviews are calling it funny and charming. In this sequel, “wimpy” Greg and his older brother – and chief tormentor – Rodrick are forced to bond by their parents, with hilarious results.

To celebrate the release, Twentieth Century Fox wants to give one lucky Table for Five reader a fantastic Wimpy Kid Prize Pack worth $79.00!  One winner will be chosen to receive the Cheese Touch board game, Zoo Wee Mama Card Game, Wimpy Kid Action Figure Set, a 200-piece puzzle, and Diary of a Wimpy Kid UNO!

disclosure: I received Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue Two Disc Blu-ray/DVD combo from Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment for the purposes of review.

Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue Review

Following up on the successes of 2008′s “Tinker Bell” and 2009′s “Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure”, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment will release Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue (Two-Disc Blu-ray/ DVD Combo)
on September 21, 2010. Kaitlyn loved the first two movies, so when the PR firm I work with asked if we wanted to review Great Fairy Rescue, I replied back YES PLEASE!

What it’s about: Before she met Wendy and the Lost Boys in “Peter Pan”, Tinker Bell met another human! It seems that in the summer, the fairies gather for a sort of summer camp in the English countryside. While searching for something to “tinker with”, Tink happens upon an automobile, and ends up trapped in a Fairy House created by Lizzy, a 9 year old girl living with her Father, who is very busy and unfortunately tends to brush off Lizzy’s attempts at a relationship.. Lizzy very much believes in fairies, but her Father only believes in what he can see with his eyes.

Another fairy, Vidia, sees Tink get captured and rallies the other fairies to launch a daring rescue into human territory to help their friend. Meanwhile, Tink and Lizzy figure out a way to communicate and Lizzy learns more than she ever dreamed about fairies and their world! Here’s the trailer:

Why Blu-ray?: This is the kind of movie that it seems Blu-ray was invented for. From the moment the movie starts, you find yourself in an eye-popping, dazzling world of colors and textures. The amount of detail in every frame is just amazing. The greens are so green, the golds are so gold, everything just feels like you could reach through the screen and touch it. Kaitlyn and I have watched three times now, and I see something new every time!

Start making your holiday shopping list now, because the “Previews” section of the bonus features shows clips from all of these upcoming movies from Disney! I know these are going to be on a lot of kids’ wish lists!

  • “Beauty & The Beast” Diamond Edition Blu-ray
  • “Tangled”
  • “The Search For Santa Paws”
  • “Beverly Hills Chihuahua II” on Blu-ray/DVD
  • Disney Nature: “Oceans” and “The Crimson Wing”
  • “Toy Story 3″ on Blu-ray/DVD
  • “Lion King” Diamond Edition
  • “Tinker Bell & The Mysterious Woods”

BONUS FEATURES

1. “Tangled”: Exclusive Sneak Peak – This movie is more than just the story of Rapunzel, it’s also about a daring young man (who is also a thief) and the challenges (and humorous situations) he faces while trying to rescue her. I think the directors were smart in playing up the character of Flynn Rider so that this movie will appeal to boys as well as girls.

2. Deleted Scenes with commentary by the director and the producer -

     A. “A Real Fairy”  Originally the opening of the movie, this scene showed Lizzy’s Father as a child, meeting a fairy. After he confides in a friend who yells the news to everyone else, disaster ensues. I’m glad this was left out, it would have made such a dark opening for the movie.

B.”Lizzy’s Bedtime Story” –  shown in both storyboard and grayscale versions, this scene is between Lizzy and her Father.  Originally meant to be shown before Tink meets Lizzy, the director decided it was better for the audience to meet Lizzy at the same time Tink does.

     C. “Tea Party” – A scene with Tink and Lizzy having a tea party. The director brought in a group of 9 year old girls and asked them what they would want to do if they met a fairy, and the majority said have a tea party. It was cut because it didn’t move the story forward.

D.”Cat Attack” – This scene stars Tink and Lizzy’s cat Mr. Twitches, and shows Tink escaping the cat’s clutches. The director and producer ultimately decided to cut it but liked it so much, they finished part of the frames in full color.

3. Music & More - Bridgit Mendler’s music video for “How To Believe”, with Bridgit having fun with friends plus a few clips from the movie.

4. Games & Activities – Fairy Field Guide Builder – Use the Blu-ray remote to answer questions about Fairies and learn all about them.  Illustrations that look hand-colored with crayons are part of the charm of this bonus feature.

5.  Backstage Disney - ”Design a Fairy House”  – In the movie, Lizzy builds a little fairy house for fairies to use in case they come by and need a rest. At the Epcot Flower and Garden Festival, kids had the chance to use craft supplies to design their ideal fairy house.  The companion website PixieHollow.com held a contest to design a fairy house, and the winner was flown to Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, where she got to help turn her design into a real fairy house!

6. Learn how to take your favorite movies on the go with the included Disney Digital Copy.

SO.  Convinced yet??! Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue is just a great movie and well worth spending $21.99 on. Please note that if you do click one of the links in this post and purchase the movie during that visit to Amazon.com, I will earn a teeny tiny commission on the sale. Which helps support my coffee habit, so thank you in advance :) What are you waiting for? Go buy it!

Brooke Shields talks about “Furry Vengeance”

Last week I had the pleasure of joining a small group of bloggers on a conference call to talk to Brooke Shields about the movie Furry Vengeance, which opens this Friday in theaters.  If you haven’t seen the trailer, Furry Vengeance stars Brooke, Brendan Fraser, Ken Jeong (“The Hangover”), Samantha Bee (“The Daily Show” ), Matt Prokop (“High School Musical 3″), and a bunch of cute but ruthless forest animals.

Synopsis: A real estate developer moves his family to rural Oregon for his work on a new housing project. But construction threatens the local forest population and the animals come out with fur and feathers flying, seeking to sabotage construction and save their homes.

My question for Brooke was why she had chosen to do this movie in particular. Her answer – “The opportunity  to work with Brendan, the chance to make a kids’ movie, and to entertain adults with smart humor”.

For her answers to the rest of the questions, I just typed as fast as I could and paraphrased what she said.  Here’s what I got from the interview:

  • what she liked best about making the movie – director said “trust me”, gathered best comics around, leap of faith, best time she’s ever had on a movie
  • imperative to educate kids on the importance of the environment without being preachy
  • her kids feel empowered by the abillity to protect the environment
  • does being a Mom affect her career choices?  was incredibly focused and ambitious performer, took precedence over everything. having children shifted her focus to considering the entirety of her life
  • is still able to be as passionate about her work but finds herself wanting to enjoy her work
  • has a desire for her kids’ respect, knows she has to earn it
  • we need films with smart humor that entertains the whole family
  • watch for the end credits, they filmed an entire music video!
  •  is it harder to make a movie than TV?  very different energy, more controlled, a bit harder to sustain since you have to redo the comedy
  • Brendan one of the most incredible talents she’s ever worked with, very intelligent. Generous with other actors, will highlight other actors’ talents

Furry Vengeance opens in theaters tomorrow.  I’d like to thank Ryan from Summit Entertainment for inviting me to join the conference call, and thank you Brooke Shields for taking time to talk to us!

Watch this with your kids-Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian

NightMuseumBDWhen the lights go off, the battle is on! Night At The Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian arrives in a Blu-ray Disc/DVD Combo Pack (Blu-ray, DVD and a Digital Copy) and for a limited time only a “Monkey Mischief” double DVD on December 1 from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. We received this on Blu-Ray from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment for review, and it was as funny as I thought it would be! This is a terrific movie for families to watch together. If you didn’t see it, here’s the description:

History is larger than life — and twice as funny — in this monumental comedy sequel. Ben Stiller (Meet The Parents, There’s Something About Mary) stars as Larry Daley, a former night watchman at the Museum of Natural History, where the exhibits come alive after dark. But now Larry’s nocturnal friends are being retired to the archives of the Smithsonian Institution, luring him back for a hilarious, all-out battle against a cranky Egyptian Pharaoh who plans to take over the museum… and the world! From returning director Shawn Levy (Cheaper By The Dozen), the film also stars Amy Adams (Enchanted), Robin Williams (Good Will Hunting), Owen Wilson (Wedding Crashers), Hank Azaria (“The Simpsons”), Ricky Gervais (“The Office”), Steve Coogan (Tropic Thunder) and Jonah Hill (Super Bad).

Since I didn’t see it in the theater I don’t have anything to compare it with, but this movie absolutely pops on Blu-Ray. Considering that the majority of the story takes place indoors and at night, colors like bright yellows, reds, blues, and shiny golds are used to brighten up the scenes. The music is muted or non-existent during dialogue scenes, and then punched up to majestic thundering during action scenes.

One of my favorite parts of this movie is how the paintings and photographs on display at the museum not only come to life, but actually become part of the plot. There’s a fantastic cameo by Jay Baruchel (“Tropic Thunder”) as a sailor from that famous photo of a sailor kissing a woman on V-J day in Times Square. If you own a Blu-Ray player, this movie is worth buying on Blu-Ray format.

There are three options for this movie; the Blu-Ray/DVD combo, a two-disc DVD set, and the single disc. Info on all:

Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack
The Night At The Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack includes a high definition version of the film with over an hour of mayhem, mischief and monumental magic of outrageously funny features – including an interactive museum scavenger hunt game, gag reel, 12 deleted scenes with an alternate ending, “Cherub Bootcamp,” “Phinding Pharaoh With Hank Azaria” featurettes – a Digital Copy and a standard DVD. The pack is available for the gift-giving price of $39.99 U.S. / $49.99 Canada. ($29.99 at Best Buy)

Monkey Mischief
The limited edition “Monkey Mischief” double DVD boasts a second disc including over 30 minutes of entertainment complimenting the bonus materials featured on the first disc, including cast and crew commentary, six deleted scenes with an alternate ending, a gag reel, and more. The holiday two-pack DVD will be available for the suggested retail price of $34.98 U.S. / $45.98 Canada. (only $19.99 at Best Buy!)

Single Disc
The Night At The Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian single disc DVD has one hour of special feature laughs from favorite stars including commentary by cast and crew, featurettes, six deleted scenes with an alternate ending, and a gag reel for the suggested retail price of $29.98 U.S. / $43.48 Canada. ($19.99 at Best Buy)

Pick up this movie for your own collection or as a terrific holiday gift!

Toy Story 3 Trailer!

Toy Story (1995) was the first fully computer-...

Image via Wikipedia

When the first Toy Story movie came out in theaters in 1995, Chris and I had been married two years and still had that luxury of being able to look at each other on a Friday night and say “hey, let’s go to the movies!”. We had seen a trailer for Toy Story and because of the animation and seeing some of our favorite childhood toys brought to life, we knew we wanted to see it.

I can’t seem to find any info online regarding when Toy Story was originally released on video, but I’m pretty sure it was 1998, Ryan got it for his birthday, and watched it every single day from October 2nd until New Year’s Day when I declared that I could not watch it any more, as much as I loved it, because that was enough.

Toy Story 2 came out in 1999, and we took a then-3 year old Ryan and then-1 year old Nathan to see it with us. Nathan got the Woody doll that had the guitar, “Sing and Strum Woody”, and Ryan got the Buzz Lightyear that made flying noises when you swooped it around the room, with retractable wings and buttons that made Buzz talk. Those were very successful gifts! In fact, when Buzz broke, we bought another one, and it’s still in their toybox and now Kaitlyn plays with it!

And now, Toy Story and Toy Story 2 have been re-released in 3D and you can see them in theaters in a double feature, and in June of 2010, the Toy Story 3 movie comes to theaters! I found this trailer and you can bet that I will be in line with my whole family to see this next summer. It looks AWESOME. Even if it is weird to see Andy as a teenager :) Enjoy!

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: Diamond Edition

Snow White DVDThe newly released, digitally restored, enhanced-in-every-way Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Diamond Edition is a must-buy for any movie lover. You probably knew that Snow White was the first full-length animated feature produced by Walt Disney, but did you know that it was also the first film to have a soundtrack album released? Or that it was the first animated movie in American history? If there was ever a reason to buy a Blu-Ray player, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (and the previously released Pinocchio) is it. The colors are bright and fresh, the sound is clear, and it comes packed with bonus features.

We received the Diamond Edition with DVD packaging to review last week, and Kaitlyn has watched it at least once every day since it arrived. While I was at IZEAFest, there were a couple of days that she watched it twice! She really, REALLY loves it. I was surprised that it wasn’t too scary for her, especially the scene where Snow White runs through the forest before falling asleep, with the trees grabbing for her. But no, Kaitlyn is fine with all of it. She loves the little animals, the dwarves, and Snow White who she has declared to be “pretty, beautiful, and kind”.

Disney has released different combos for this movie that are kind of confusing. There’s a Diamond Edition with a silver border and a large image of Snow White on the cover, and under the border it reads “Includes DVD + Blu-Ray”. There’s also a Diamond Edition with a blue border and a large image of the Witch on the cover, and under that border it reads “Includes Blu-Ray + DVD”. But they both include one standard DVD disc and two blu-ray discs! From what I can tell, the only other difference is that the silver border package has a black case, and the blue border package has a blue case. I guess so that you can buy the version that will color-coordinate with the rest of the cases in your movie collection!

In addition to the commentary by historian John Canemaker, the music video of “Some Day My Prince Will Come” by Disney Channel star Tiffany Thornton, and a sneak peek at the upcoming “The Princess and the Frog”, the Blu-Ray discs have 7.1 high definition sound, and a feature called “Disney View”. If you view the movie in regular format, you’ll see black bars on either side of the screen. In Disney View, animators filled in those blank side with subtle artwork, like extra trees during the forest scenes. I don’t mind the black bars but it does add an interesting touch.

We also love the main menu, which has the Magic Mirror welcome you to the movie the first time you play the disc, then welcome you back each additional time. How clever!  The “Backstage Disney” bonus features include a look at newly discovered storyboards that suggest that Walt Disney was planning a Snow White sequel, and a look at the original studio where he worked.  Blu-Ray players that are BD-Live compatible (meaning the player downloads content through the internet connection) will get additional bonus games.

Honestly, I can’t think of a better movie to buy right now, it’s sure to delight young and old viewers, and it’s refreshing to see classic animation. The DVD packaging is $24.99, the Blu-Ray packaging is $19.99, and here’s a tip: if you purchase the Blu-Ray packaging, enter code snowhite (one “w”) in the promo code box at checkout and you’ll get $10 off! Which means an incredible $9.99 for one standard and two blu-ray discs of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Now THAT’S a good deal!

Bedknobs and Brooksticks: Enchanted Musical Edition

Bedknobs BroomsticksI have a very, very faint memory of my parents taking my sister and I to the drive-in to see Walt Disney’s Bedknobs and Broomsticks, and now it’s been newly restored and remastered as Bedknobs and Brooksticks: Enchanted Musical Edition. The movie takes place in England in 1940, with the British Army arriving at a village and rounding up volunteers to fight the Nazis. Angela Lansbury plays Miss Price, a local woman who is asked to look after three orphaned children who have been evacuated from London to the countryside. What the children soon learn is that Miss Price has sent away for a mail-order degree in being a witch! In exchange for not telling her secret, they get her to agree to help them get back to London. She casts a traveling spell that enchants a glass bedknob which will allow their four poster bed to fly. When she gets a letter from the witch school saying they are closing down the apprentice witch program, Miss Price decides to go with the children so she can appeal to the headmaster to give her the spell that could end the war. They find themselves traveling to the animated island of Naboombu to get the spell from the cartoon animals that live there, then returning home to put Miss Price’s talents to use against a Nazi raid.

This movie is absolutely delightful. Angela Lansbury is witty and charming, a very young Roddy McDowell is the village minister, and David Tomlinson (the Dad in Mary Poppins) is Professor Brown, the headmaster. The movie won the 1971 Best Effects Oscar for Special Visual Effects, and Lansbury was nominated for her song “The Age of Believing”. What I like best about this movie is that although it has musical numbers, people don’t burst into song every 5 minutes, like in some Disney musicals. It’s warm and touching and a true “feel good” movie for the whole family. The Enchanted Musical Edition DVD presents the movie fully restored and remastered, with excellent sound quality. The bonus features include a look at the reconstruction and a feature about special effects hosted by Jennifer Stone from Disney’s Wizards of Waverly Place. I recommend it for Disney fans and for any family movie collection!
